Special points of interest: A magic show review Magic news Trick of the month This month was supposed to be a little more laid back, but with 2 vacations, catching up on office work, birthing classes, shows & everything else going on we are still working like crazy. Last month we spent a few days in Williamsburg with my brother & his family. Then a week later we went to Massachusetts with Natalie s parents. Both vacations were filled day and night with activities, no down time and everyone on both trips ended up more tired after the vacation than before we left. Eric Anderson Eric Anderson was a street performer in Georgia's Underground Atlanta. He made a name for himself working on the streets, building huge crowds and making money all at the same time. He also developed some amazing routines over this time. Eric no longer works on the streets as far as I know, but has now become a motivational speaker who also uses magic to drive his point home while Cont on next page...

When he was 5 years old his adopted father taught him a simple magic trick then shortly after that he was placed in foster care. Growing up in California s Child Welfare System he lived in numerous foster homes until he turned 18. He said he was going through some serious personal challenges and magic gave him something to focus on during that hard time. Natalie & I first met Eric at a magic convention where he lectured on marketing, magic, & more. He performed that night in front of a mixed audience; half magicians and half regular folks and he killed. He was a great lecturer & performer, he is a big guy with a booming voice and is great at taking control of his audience. Check out his website at Me & Eric Anderson in 2008 Entertainment News / Fox Developing New Magic TV Show Fox has just reportedly bought Magicians; a drama adaptation of the popular fantasy novel. It will be written by the same folks who wrote Thor and X-Men: First Class. Based on Grossman s book, which is described as Harry Potter for grown-ups, the onehour drama follows a group of 20-something's in New York who study magic and have access to a magical world. I know many of my magic friends are looking forward to anything magic on TV, although for me if there is too much fantasy magic, I tune out. I will let you know more on this when it develops. Our interview with Va living TV is now uploaded on Youtube Natalie & I have performed and been interviewed with Va Living TV several times over the past few years. We have been interviewed in the Culpeper and Charlottesville studios. This newest interview was filmed back in December 2010 and I just got it uploaded on my Youtube Channel. It is a 2 part interview which has lots of magic, a lot of information on Natalie & myself and the interview ends with us performing our sword basket illusion. One of the things Natalie & I were looking forward to during this trip was learning first hand about the Salem witch trials. While exploring in Salem we found Salem s oldest cemetery. There are twenty benches in the cemetery, one for each of the victims actively put to death (not counting those who died in prison). I was kicking a few ideas around about what I wanted to do for a video this month and once I walked through the gates of the cemetery I knew this effect fit the surroundings perfectly. In this video a nail turns over in my hand again and again as if being moved by a ghost. Was it a ghost? Was I using witchcraft? Was it just a cool trick? You be the judge... Check out this video online at just search Wes Iseli s Magic in Salem Cemetery Magic News / Know your audience (BRA TRICK) In Abington, Mass. - The chairman of the Abington School Committee is an amateur magician known to open public meetings with a little sleight of hand. According to the local news out of Boston the magician may have crossed a line when he performed a trick that made it appear as though he and a teacher ripped the bra off another committee member through her clothes. The volunteer appeared embarrassed and did not want to talk about it. Other board members followed suit and also declined comment. The magician was interviewed after the meeting and he said he did not think the trick was inappropriate as he was trying to open the meeting on a light hearted note before getting serious. He later apologized and said he thinks the magic will stay at home from now on. In other news the effect know as the Baffling Bra has been on the market for a long time and has never made headline news before because it is usually performed in night clubs and not at school board meetings. We started this policy 15 years ago to give 10 percent of the show booked back to the person who made the referral to say thanks. A type of show you may not realize we perform for are adult birthday parties. Before your mind goes into the gutter let me tell you my show is not rude, crude, or anything like that. We do change our show up for the adult audience and may use lots more humor & even pick on volunteers in a fun way. More often than not it is the wife who hires us to perform for the husband s party for their family and friends. This most recent show I was hired by the birthday girl to come and entertain for her friends and family who were mostly traveling from out of state. We had a great time, this show was so fun I had tears in my eyes from laughing so hard. Happy Birthday Linda! Thanks again for having us... Performing a rope effect Performing cards across Performing a comedy mind reading routine with the birthday girl Our Visit to Salem Massachusetts Natalie & I just got back from Salem, Massachusetts. While there we took in about everything they offered to us about how and why the witch trials happened. We went to the witch museum, the jail/dungeon, the cemetery, and story tellers who all have a different take on the witch trials. Some say it was a way to make profit off of the victims by acquiring their land and property, while others say it was a way to get rid of the other rival churches in town who were not puritan in their teaching. The main story told over and over was that it was all because of a couple of girls who were bored and enjoyed stories from their slave cook about voodoo, tea leaf reading and more. The girls started role playing that people put spells on them and that they were attacking them in their dreams and more. The whole town got caught up in the hoopla and it has been a black mark on the history of Salem. The whole thing was so crazy that people were being accused of being a witch without any evidence or apparent reason and they were brought to court and put on trial. The reasons for accusing someone of being a witch could be a birthmark, scratch or flea bite (which would have been known in those days as being proof of a Devil s Mark), someone accusing you of sending them into fits, and/or possessing ointments, cruds dolls, or other tools of the trade. The main consensus of how everything was put to a halt was that the girls were invited to another town to see if they could spot any witches there. The girls pointed out the mayor s wife and said she had an evil spirit surrounding her, the mayor then put his foot down. He demanded real evidence before accusing someone of being a witch. This is still demanded in today's courts. Lesson learned: It is not for us to judge anyone and you need to learn from the past or you re doomed to repeat it... The performer then traces their hand and asks the spectator to pick a finger on the drawing and to place an X on the finger tip then trace over the X again and again causing friction. More magic available at wesiseli.com Teach a Trick / Contact Houdini on Halloween Effect: What if you asked the spectator 6 questions, then looked at a picture of Houdini and he whispered the answer to you for each one. Secret: All you need is a piece of dirt on the victim; it can be anything that they think you do not know. With that secret you can start by asking random questions you could not possibly know the answers to. Example: You find out their favorite Halloween candy from a friend. With that information you can look like a real mind reader or psychic. Ask the victim a random question, pretend to ask the Houdini picture, write the favorite Halloween candy for answer #1. Ask as many questions as you want because you are now 1 step ahead of them. Just remember to end with the Halloween candy question. Tip: Use different slips of paper for each answer and mix them up as you go along so they won t catch on that you were writing down something else each time. Enjoy this one and remember to play it up. Houdini spent his whole life exposing fake mediums and psychics but he did promise to contact the living after he died if he could...
