Unit 8 Summary: Snapshot S napshot is all about the pictures of heaven Jesus gave us through His amazing miracles. In Snapshot, we use a photography theme to talk about how Jesus gave us snapshots of heaven through the incredible things He did. In heaven there is no sickness, so Jesus healed the sick. In heaven there is no hunger, so Jesus fed the crowds. In heaven there is no death, so Jesus raised the dead. In heaven there is no sin, so Jesus forgave sinners and gave them the power to live a new life. In this Covenant and Kingdom unit, kids will get a sneak peek at heaven and discover how God wants to use them to bring the Kingdom to earth. 1

Welcome back to Kairos Quest. We are jumping into a brand new series today called Snapshot. To get us ready, I want everyone to hold up an imaginary camera and pretend like you re taking a picture. Don t forget to yell Cheese! Great job! How many of you guys like to take pictures? How many of you have snapped pictures using someone s cell phone? How many of you have used a real camera? Have any of you ever put together a scrapbook or photo album? Kids answer. Pictures are a really fun way to capture special moments to show other people. Pictures can be especially fun when you go on vacation. It s great to share your cool snapshots with your friends to show them the place you visited and what you did there. Today we re going to talk about some snapshots from the Bible that tell us a lot about a special place. But before we get to that, I want to make sure your snapshot senses are razor sharp. So get ready for our big Snapshot Quiz! Opening Activity: Snapshot Quiz The purpose of this activity is to get kids thinking about how a snapshot can show you what a place is like. In the same way, later in the lesson we ll see that Jesus miracles show us what heaven is like. How To Play: Instructions Show kids pictures of famous landmarks and ask them to yell out where the landmarks are located. Supplies: 6 Pictures of the following places, either printed out or projected on a video screen. Snapshot 1: Eiffel Tower (Paris, France) 3

Snapshot 2: Big Ben (London, England) Snapshot 3: Statue of Liberty (New York City) Snapshot 4: Great Pyramids (Cairo, Egypt) Snapshot 5: Cinderella s Castle (Orlando, Florida) I m going to show you some snapshots from some famous places. I want you guys to yell out if you think you know where these places are. Show kids pictures of the following places either by holding up hard copies or displaying them using a video projector. Snapshot 1: Snapshot 2: Snapshot 3: Snapshot 4: Snapshot 5: Eiffel Tower (Paris, France) Big Ben (London, England) Statue of Liberty (New York City) Great Pyramids (Cairo, Egypt) Cinderella s Castle (Orlando, Florida) Bible Story Set the teaching area with a white board and dry erase markers. It s amazing how you can tell so much about a place just based on one little snapshot. Someone once said a picture is worth a thousand words. Imagine if you were on vacation at one of these amazing places and you called one of your friends at home and tried to tell them what it was like. Think about how hard it would to tell someone about the Eiffel Tower over the phone. But then imagine if you texted that person a picture or posted it on Facebook. That person would know exactly what you meant! Your snapshot would tell them all about the place you were visiting. The Bible tells us that when Jesus was here on earth, He showed people some snapshots too. Now, Jesus didn t have a camera or a cell phone, but He could do some pretty incredible stuff called miracles. A miracle is when Jesus did something that everyone thought was impossible like walk on water, calm a storm, heal the sick, or even bring dead people back to life. Jesus did these things to help people and to prove that He really is the Son of God. But He also did these things to show people snapshots of heaven. Jesus showed us what God s Kingdom is like by the things He did. 4

Outside Inside Today we re going to be talking about someone who is hurt. So I want you guys to tell me some of the ways you ve been hurt or sick before. Take examples from kids and write them in a column. Label the column OUTSIDE. OK, these are outside hurts. Now let s list some ways you ve been hurt on the inside like maybe things that have hurt your feelings or that you felt bad about. Write these examples in a second column. Label the column INSIDE. Those are great examples. Let s get right to it and see what Jesus does with both kinds of pain. Since this is our Snapshot series, I m going to need some volunteers to help me create some snapshots from today s story. I need people who are really good at freezing and being statues. Bring up seven volunteers: one to play the paralyzed man, four to play his friends, one to play a Pharisee, and one to play the man after he is healed. Set the volunteers in place according to the following scenes. Keep it fun and light as you get them into their poses. The more exaggerated the poses, the better they will be. Snapshot 1: Paralyzed Man Snapshot 2: Four Friends Snapshot 3: Grumpy Pharisee Snapshot 4: Healed man First we have Snapshot 1, the paralyzed man. Does anyone know what paralyzed means? Kids answer. It means you can t move. (To kid playing paralyzed man) I m going to need you lie down and pretend like you can t move. Now if you couldn t move, would you be happy or sad about it? This guy was probably pretty unhappy with his medical condition. So I want you to show us how unhappy you can look. Once you do that, freeze! Next we have Snapshot 2, the four friends. (To kids playing the four friends) In this snapshot, you guys are pretending to dig a hole, so I want you to grab your imaginary shovel and get in your best digging poses. Once you do that, freeze! 5

After that we have Snapshot 3, the Pharisee. This guy is a total grump. (To kid playing Pharisee) So I want you to fold your arms and give me your grumpiest look. Once you do that, freeze! Finally we have Snapshot 4, the healed man, who is amazed and happy. (To kid playing healed man) I want you look down at your legs with eyes wide and a big smile on your face. Once you do that, freeze! Remember, actors, you need to stay totally frozen and be our snapshots as we tell the story. Volunteers, are you ready? Kids, are you ready? Then let s get into the story of Jesus and the paralyzed man. (Step over to Snapshot 1.) The story begins with this paralyzed man. We don t know if the man had been in an accident, if he had a disease, or if he had just been born this way. But we do know that he couldn t move his legs, and he wasn t very happy about it. In those days they didn t have wheelchairs, so this poor guy spent the whole day lying around on a mat. The only way he could get anywhere is if someone carried him. (Walk over to Snapshot 2.) But fortunately, this paralyzed man had four friends who loved him a lot. These guys were determined to do anything (and I do mean anything) to help their friend. But even though they wanted to help, they knew that they couldn t actually do anything to fix their friend s legs. However, they had heard there was someone who could. They had heard about a guy named Jesus who could actually heal people s bodies, make sick people well, and fix people s injuries just like this. (Snap fingers.) These guys picked up their friend s mat and ran him over to the house where Jesus was teaching, but when they got there it was too crowded. Jesus was all the way inside, and they couldn t even get in the door. That s when one of them came up with the craziest plan. They went and found some rope and some tools and then climbed up on the roof of the house and dug a big hole in the roof over the spot where Jesus was teaching. Then they took the rope and lowered their friend down through the hole right in front of Jesus! When Jesus saw how hard they had worked to get their friend to Jesus, He knew they must all really believe in His power. Then Jesus did something no one expected. He looked down at the paralyzed man lying on the floor in front of Him and, Son, all the bad things you ve ever done are forgiven. 6

(Walk over to Snapshot 3) Then the grumpy religious leaders who didn t like Jesus got really mad. They thought, Who does this guy think He is, forgiving people s sin like that? Only God has the authority to do that. But Jesus really is God. He really can forgive the bad things we do. He knew what those religious leaders were thinking. So he looked down at the paralyzed man and proved to everyone in that room that He could do anything. (Walk over to Snapshot 4) Jesus said to the paralyzed man, Get up, pick up your mat and go home. And in that instant, the man s legs were healed! Not only could he move them; he could walk, run, dance, and do anything else. So he did what Jesus said got up, grabbed his mat, and walked right out of there. Everyone who saw it was amazed. Jesus heals our hurts. He healed this man on the inside by forgiving his sin. He healed him on the outside by fixing his legs. This is a snapshot of what God s Kingdom is like. In God s Kingdom, Jesus heals our hurts. Bible Verse Our Bible verse today is from Revelation 21:4. It tells us what it s going to be like someday when Jesus returns. It says, He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever. Application Imagine that. Someday Jesus is going to wipe away all of our tears. He s going to fix all the things that don t work on our bodies and fix our inside hurts too. He will heal us inside and out. Refer to white board. That means all of this stuff that we talked about earlier both our outside hurts and our inside hurts totally wiped away. Erase board. 7

The cool thing is that God s Kingdom, heaven, isn t just something that s coming sometime in the future. It s starting to happen right now. Little by little, God s people bring the good stuff from heaven to earth every day. That s what Jesus did when He healed this man. In heaven there s no sickness, so Jesus healed him. This means that we can ask for Jesus power for healing today. When people are sick, we pray for Jesus to heal them. And sometimes, Jesus does it, just like He did to that paralyzed man. They go from hurt to healed instantly. Heaven breaks through into earth and everybody says, Whoa! At other times, Jesus heals people more slowly through doctors and medicine and hospitals, and even though it s not as quick, it s just as amazing. And at some other times, we pray for people who are sick, and they don t get healed. That s hard to understand, but we have to remember that Jesus wants everyone healed. In heaven they will be healed, even though right now we re still in a world that s messed up by sin and sickness. So we keep praying and asking God to bring heaven to earth. Prayer God, we love you and thank You that You want to heal all of our hurts. Please help the people we know right now whose bodies are hurt or sick. Please use your Kingdom power to make them well. We pray also for people we know who have been hurt on the inside, who are sad or lonely or afraid. Please heal their hurts too. Amen 8

GAME ON: LESSON 31 (Huddle) Key Concept: Jesus heals our hurts Bible Story: Jesus heals the paralytic (Mark 2:2-12) Bible Verse: He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever. Revelation 21:4 NLT 3DM Principle: Covenant and Kingdom (Kingdom breakthrough) Large Group Overview: Kids will act out the story of Jesus healing the paralytic to see how Jesus miracles brought heaven to earth Huddle Overview: Kids will play a game to help them distinguish between inside and outside hurts and then will pray for healing somewhere in their lives Supplies 6 Snapshot from one of the Huddle leader s personal vacations 6 Tell Me Where It Hurts game board (1 per group) 6 Hurt cards (1 deck per group) 6 Adhesive bandages (24 per group) 9

9 6 Bible verse cards (1 per child) 6 Snapshot Sheet (1 per child) 6 Drawing supplies such as crayons, markers, or colored pencils (enough for each child) Huddle Group Outline Welcome / Review Vacation Snapshot and questions (5 min) Activity Tell Me Where It Hurts (10 min) Huddle Discussion Bible Verse & Prayer (10 min) (5 min) Welcome / Large Group Review Gather kids in a circle either on the floor or around a table. Welcome back to Huddle. To start off our new Snapshot series, I brought some snapshots of a fun place I visited. Show vacation pictures to kids. Does anyone have any idea where this is? Kids answer. If they can t guess, tell them where the picture was taken. 6 What can you tell about this place from the snapshot? Kids answer. Tell them a little more about the place and what you did on vacation there. It s funny how much a good snapshot can tell you about a place. In today s Bible story, we saw that Jesus gave people a snapshot of heaven when he performed a miracle. 6 What is a miracle? 6 Do you remember what miracle Jesus performed in today s story? 6 What do you think would be hard about being paralyzed? 6 If you were paralyzed and Jesus healed you, what would be the first thing you d go and do? 10

In heaven there s no sickness or pain, so Jesus healed the man and gave us a snapshot of what heaven will be like. Huddle Activity: Tell Me Where It Hurts The purpose of this activity is to help kids distinguish between inside hurts and outside hurts. How It Works: Divide your huddle into two teams. In each round one player from each team will face off against the other. You will draw a card from the deck and play it between the two players by reading the situation listed on the card. You ll then say, Tell me where it hurts! The first child to unwrap his/her adhesive bandage and stick in the correct circle on the game board wins the card for their team. Play through all the cards and declare a winner. Supplies 6 Tell Me Where It Hurts game board (1 per group) 6 Hurt cards (1 deck per group) 6 Adhesive bandages (24 per group) Today we re going to play a game called Tell Me Where It Hurts. This is a question doctors ask all the time to find out what s wrong with their patients, and it s a question I m going to ask you today to help us tell the difference between inside hurts and outside hurts. I m going to divide our Huddle into two teams. In each round, a player from each team will face off against each other. I ll draw a card and read the situation. You have to decide if it s an inside hurt or an outside hurt. Remember, outside hurts are things like sickness or injury. Inside hurts are things that hurt your feelings or make you sad. Which Kind of Hurt? Which Kind of Hurt? 11

The game board only has two circles, inside and outside. Each player is going to get one of these handy-dandy adhesive bandages, and the first player to unwrap his or hers and stick it in correct circle wins the Hurt card for their team. The team that wins the most cards wins the game. Let s play Tell Me Where It Hurts! Hurt Cards 6 Trevor wrecked his bike and tore up his knee. 6 Ella s best friend lied to her. 6 Jen broke her leg playing soccer. 6 Chris is sad because his grandpa died. 6 Jane feels left out because she didn t get invited to her friend s birthday party. 6 Matt has the flu. 6 Diane s mother lost her job and can t find a new one. 6 Steve s neighbor is really old and is lonely because no one ever visits her. 6 Kristin twisted her ankle at ballet. 6 Nicole has a stomach bug. 6 Dylan got braces, and the other kids make fun of him. 6 Kendall fell off the swing and broke her nose. As you can see, there are a lot of different ways people get can get hurt. But being hurt was never part of God s plan. It happens because we live in a world messed up by sin. But God s power is bigger than our hurts. Some day in heaven, all of those hurts will be gone, and sometimes God heals people here on earth right here and now. That s why He wants us to pray for people to be healed because it brings some of heaven to earth. Huddle Discussion Today we re going to pray for someone we know who needs to be healed. We ll start by taking a few seconds to be totally quiet. I m going to pray for Jesus to bring someone to your mind who needs healing. Maybe it s someone you know with an outside hurt, or maybe it s someone you know with an inside hurt, someone who s sad or discouraged in some way. 12

Let s pray. Jesus, thank You for wanting to heal our hurts. Please help us to think of someone who needs your healing today. Please put their names or their faces in our minds right now. We re just going to be quiet for a few seconds, Jesus, and let You talk. (Wait about ten seconds.) Thank you for Your healing power, Jesus. Amen. Pass out Snapshot Sheets to each of the kids. Right now I m giving your own blank Snapshot Sheet. It kinds of look like a photograph without anything on it. I want you to draw a picture on this sheet of someone you know that needs Jesus healing for an inside or outside hurt. Give kids a few minutes to draw their pictures. If kids are having trouble thinking of someone, you can ask them questions like if they know anyone who is in the hospital or sick, anyone who has broken a bone, anyone who s lonely or sad, etc. Now we re going to go around the circle. If you want, you can share whom you drew and if they need healing for an inside hurt or an outside hurt. Go around the circle and let kids share their drawings. Bible Verse Those are all great. The cool thing is that in heaven, Jesus will heal all of those kinds of hurts. No one will be hurt or sick or sad in heaven. Pass out Bible Verse Cards. Our Bible verse today is from the very last book of the Bible, which is called Revelation. It tells us how God s big story ends. Let s read it together: He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever. (Revelation 21:4 NLT) Prayer Just imagine that a place where no one hurts. Because we have Jesus Kingdom power, we don t always have to wait for heaven for healing. Jesus still does miracles. We can pray and ask God to heal hurts right now. 13

I want you to look at your paper and think about that person. Think about this person s hurt. Think about how he or she needs healing from Jesus. Think about how powerful Jesus is. Let s bow our heads. Repeat this prayer after me. Jesus, (Kids repeat) Thank You for this person. (Kids repeat) We know you want them to be healed. (Kids repeat) Please use your healing power (Kids repeat) And make them well. (Kids repeat) We believe (Kids repeat) You can do anything. (Kids repeat) Amen. (Kids repeat) For older kids who are more comfortable praying out loud, you may choose to simply go around the circle and let each of them pray for the person on their sheet. Let s keep praying for our people this week and see what happens. Remember, Jesus wants them to be healed, and even if they don t get healed here on earth, someday they will be fully healed in heaven. Special Instructions for Next Week Next week we ll be continuing our Snapshot series, where we ll discover something else cool about heaven. Just like I brought in a snapshot from my vacation today, I want you to bring in a snapshot next week of some place you ve gone. It can be from a vacation or from somewhere close by. Make sure your moms and dads see the Family Discussion Guide this week because it will remind them that you need to bring in a picture. 14
