4 RESEARCH EXERIENCE ost-hd Research, individual and in collaboration with a Faculty in University of Connecticut (May 2008 resent) High Strain Rate Soil Constitutive Model: The research involves development of sand and clay constitutive models incorporating viscoplasticity and strain-rate-dependent behavior. The model will be implemented in finite element code Abaqus to solve boundary value problems related to geotechnical applications involving high strainrate. Energy Geotechnical Engineering: The research involves development of a thermomechanical soil constitutive model and its application in numerical modeling of geothermal energy extraction through shallow and deep foundations. Analysis of Three Dimensional ile enetration: An extremely challenging problem in the field of Geotechnical Engineering. The research involves modeling of pile jacking and driving in both sand and clay using advanced soil constitutive model and proposing design equations. Doctoral Student, urdue University (August 2005 August, 2009) Constitutive Modeling: The research focuses on the modifications and addition of new components to an existing bounding surface plasticity based constitutive model for characterizing clay behavior, with particular emphasis on capturing the residual state strength and strain-rate-dependent clay behavior. Critical state soil mechanics framework is used. The model is implemented in a finite element code to solve boundary value problems related to piling engineering. ile Shaft Capacity Determination : The research focuses on capturing the immediate and long-term shaft capacity of jacked piles and drilled shafts in clay using bounding surface plasticity based constitutive model. The process involves investigation of pile strength gain due to clay-consolidation. Finite element code SNAC is used to solve the boundary value problem. Axially and Laterally Loaded iles: The research involves three dimensional finite element modeling of axially and laterally loaded piles and pile groups in multilayered soil incorporating soil nonlinearity. Finite element code Abaqus is used. User material subroutines (UMAT) are written for different soil constitutive models. Bearing Capacity of Footings: In this research, determination of bearing capacity of strip footings on sand under eccentric and inclined loads was performed. We have proposed equations for the inclination factor, the effective width and the footing failure locus in the vertical load horizontal load moment space. A Generalized, Three-dimensional Foundation Model: This research aims at developing a generalized three-dimensional, continuum-based foundation model. Solutions will be obtained by using a combination of analytical and simple numerical Chakraborty, CV, 4 of 7
5 techniques so that the use of three dimensional finite element analysis can be minimized. Senior Research Fellow, IIT Delhi (January 2005 June 2005) Determination of Rock arameter: This research involved rigorous laboratory testing of rock samples to determine constitutive modeling parameters. Masters Student, IIT Delhi (January 2003 December 2004) Nuclear Repository: This research focused on coupled thermo-mechanical and thermohydro-mechanical analysis of underground nuclear repository structures in rock using finite element program ABAQUS. Slope Stability Analysis: This research involved rock drilling, coring and sampling followed by rigorous testing to perform stability analysis of rock slopes analytically and also using GEO-SLOE. G RADUATE STUDENTS hd Student: o Ms. Rajni Saggu Investigation of load transfer mechanism and soil-structure interaction for energy piles. M.Tech. Student o Sumant Mohanto Mechanical analysis of underground energy storage. o Kamlakar Singh Thermomechanical analysis of underground energy storage. o Sangeet Sachan Investigation of load transfer mechanism for energy piles.
