CH. 1: THE POSSIBILITIES OF MAGMASOFT 7 1 The Possibilities of MAGMASOFT This reference guide has been worked out to give you easy access to MAGMASOFT. It covers all the main properties and features of MAGMASOFT in a clear form. The reference guide is based on the MAGMASOFT Manual. Part 1 of the reference guide is a brief summary of the most important MAGMASOFT functions based on the MAGMASOFT Manual. The structure of this part corresponds to the carrying-out of a project and thus is mainly chronological, just like the structure of the MAGMASOFT Manual. Part 2 is a special index in which all important MAGMASOFT functions and commands are listed in alphabetical order and briefly characterized. Here you find a page number reference to the description in the MAGMASOFT Manual or the Postprocessor on Geometry Manual for each entry. Please note that this reference guide does replace neither the manual nor the training. Regardless of the reference guide, you should always work carefully through the MAGMASOFT Manual. 1.1 What Does MAGMASOFT Offer You? Complete system: All MAGMASOFT functionalities are immediately available. Open system: MAGMASOFT can be integrated into an existing EDP environment, e.g. by using an interface. User-friendly system: MAGMASOFT was specially developed for use in the foundry. Which Functions Does MAGMASOFT Contain? Project administration Integrated geometry modeling with completely automatic geometry enmeshment as well as an option for further processing of external CAD files Calculation of the casting and solidification process through numerical simulation Various possibilities for graphical result presentation on the screen Databases that contain all required data for the simulation Information menu with summarized global information about the current project

8 MAGMASOFT 4.4 REFERENCE GUIDE 1.2 Before You Start Important Notes On Installation Required System Environment MAGMASOFT is a system that is running independently (UNIX) or with an extension software (Windows). On Linux and Window, a dongle is required. MAGMASOFT is available for selected UNIX, Linux, and Windows operating systems. Minimal configuration: main memory capacity of 1024 MB, hard disk capacity of 40 GB. Installation Copy the files of the MAGMASOFT program from the installation CD to your hard disk. Install and configure MAGMASOFT using the MAGMAsetup program. (On Linux and Windows, you must instal the Node Server beforehand.) Please send the customer specific system information by , fax or mail to MAGMA Germany. Thereupon MAGMA sends you your system and license keys in the form of coded character strings. MAGMASOFT is available as a node locked system and as a floating system. Enter the system and license keys. 1.3 Starting MAGMASOFT MAGMASOFT is started by the startup script 'ms' (UNIX, Linux) or by the "Start" menu (Windows). The main MAGMASOFT interface appears (Fig. 1-1).

CH. 1: THE POSSIBILITIES OF MAGMASOFT 9 Fig. 1-1: The main interface of MAGMASOFT Menu Description in the MAGMASOFT 4.4 Manual 'project' Project administration ( Ch. 2) 'preprocessor' Modeling of the geometry ( Ch. 3)

10 MAGMASOFT 4.4 REFERENCE GUIDE 'enmeshment' Mesh generation ( Ch. 4) 'simulation' Simulation calculation ( Ch. 5) 'postprocessor' Presentation of results ( Postprocessor on Geometry 4.4 Manual) 'database' Databases ( Ch. 8) 'info' Additional informationen ( Ch. 9) In the following you get an overview of the functions of these menues. 1.4 Project Administration / 'project' The 'project' menu contains several entries for project administration, all of which you can activate directly. At any time, you can create, open, edit and delete projects and versions in the project administration. Administrating Projects A project contains all data that belong to a certain simulation. You can store and reopen a project at any time. A project consists of one or more versions that contain different variations, e.g. of your casting system. Create a New Project Enter a project name and a path to create a new project: 'CREATE PROJECT' 'CREATE VERSION' Open a Project Version Before you can work with MAGMASOFT, you have to open one of the versions assigned to the project you created: 'OPEN PROJECT'

CH. 1: THE POSSIBILITIES OF MAGMASOFT 11 Delete Results You can delete simulation results of an existing project: 'DELETE RESULTS' Delete Projects and Versions 'DELETE VERSION / PROJECT' Rename Project You can rename a project (all versions will be renamed, too): 'RENAME PROJECT' Edit Project Information You can assign and edit text and graphical information to a project: 'PROJECT INFO' 1.5 Modeling of the Geometry / Preprocessor Pressing the 'preprocessor' button you reach the construction window display of MAGMASOFT. You can start geometry modeling immediately. You can invoke all construction commands using the menu bar at the upper edge of the screen or the menu field at the right side. In this reference guide only mouse commands are explained. For most of these commands you can also use keyboard commands. (Ch. 2, page 25 pp of this reference guide contains a short description of all preprocessor keyboard commands.)! You have to define many parameters that are important for simulation as well as result display already in the preprocessor! The Preprocessor In the preprocessor you model the geometry of your casting system

12 MAGMASOFT 4.4 REFERENCE GUIDE you have three construction views at your disposal you can work optionally using the mouse, the keyboard or 'command files'. Possibilities of Geometry Modelling You can import geometries as CAD datasets using a general interface: 'FILE' 'LOAD SLA' construct geometries using the integrated MAGMASOFT geometry modeling (see below). Often a combination of both methods is useful. Geometry Administration with 'sheets' 'Sheets' are geometry plans on which you can construct components of a geometry. You can: create a 'sheet': 'FILE' 'NEW SHEET' delete a 'sheet': 'FILE' 'FREE SHEET' load a 'sheet': 'FILE' 'LOAD SHEET' store a 'sheet': 'FILE' 'SAVE SHEET' Combining 'sheets' You can store sheets not only separately but also in combination (this is a must for mesh generation if you use several sheets): 'FILE' 'SAVE ALL AS1'. Geometry Database You can store and import standard geometries using a database: 'DATABASE' 'LIST GEO' / 'LOAD GEO' Display and Views of the Geometry You have: three two dimensional construction views a three dimensional view for construction control You can:

CH. 1: THE POSSIBILITIES OF MAGMASOFT 13 define the accuracy of length scales 'UNI + GRI' (dimension) define the accuracy of coordinates 'UNI + GRI' 'GRID ON' (...) define the accuracy of circle segments 'ANG+ACC' (value) define a rotation angle for construction 'ANG+ACC' (value) individually select the construction views ( 'VIEWS' 'VIEW' (no.)), change zooming ( 'VIEWS' 'ZOOM' (factor)) and adapt the view to the screen 'VIEWS' 'AUTOFIT ON' (option). print the view ( 'PRINT') Construction Commands You can construct geometries by assigning material groups ( 'SET MAT') defining points and lines ( 'SET POINT', 'SET LINE') measure distances ( 'MEASURE') defining different shapes and creating these by defining surfaces in space or creating diagonals ( 'BEGIN BOX', 'SET CUBE', 'BEGIN CIRCLE', 'SET CYL', 'BEGIN LINE', 'SET SPH') rotating circle planes and contours around an axis ( 'SET TOR', 'SET REVAX', 'MAKE REV', 'MAKE REVE') moving contours along a reference line ( 'MAKE SWEEP') checking the geometries surfaces and positions ( 'CHECK SEL', 'SWEEP CHECK') defining a cutbox ( 'SET CBF') rounding edges ( 'ROUND EDGE') combining two or more geometries using a macro ( 'MACRO', 'EMACRO') Manipulation Commands You can manipulate existing geometries by selecting, marking, copying and deleting geometries ( 'SELECT', 'MARK SEL', 'COPY SEL', 'DEL SEL')

14 MAGMASOFT 4.4 REFERENCE GUIDE canceling selections ( 'UNSEL ENTITY') deleting selected points and edges ( 'UNDO POINT') moving geometries at random ( 'MOVE') turning and displacing contours for rotation ( 'ROT CON', 'MOVE CON') rotating, scaling and mirroring geometries ( 'SET AXIS', 'ROT SEL', 'SCALE SEL', 'SET MIR', 'MIR SEL') defining control points ( Menu 'CTRL POINT' (Options)) Support Functions The following aids make your work easier: user defined settings and construction protocols (only via keyboard: e.g. 'FILE' 'EDIT PRE- RC') command files 'FILE' 'EDIT CMD' / 'READ CMD' display of information about the casting system: 'INFO' (Options) zoom of the default message window 'VIEWS' 'MESSAGE HISTORY' definition of function keys and use of text editors (only via keyboard) 1.6 Mesh Generation / 'enmeshment' By selecting 'enmeshment' you get to the main window for calculating the mesh, 'mesh generation', from where you define all further parameters. The enmeshment results are displayed in the 'calculated mesh size' window. What is a Calculation Mesh? A division of the geometries created in the preprocessor into calculation elements. What to Pay Attention to? A higher number of mesh elements increases the simulation accuracy but also the calculation time.

CH. 1: THE POSSIBILITIES OF MAGMASOFT 15 How is the Mesh Generated? The mesh is mainly generated automatically using predefined parameters. You can change these parameters ( 'STANDARD'). It is also possible to use different enmeshment parameters for different material groups ( 'ADVANCED' for two sets of parameters, 'ADVANCED2' for three sets of parameters). You can also create a mesh automatically only ( 'AUTOMATIC'). The Parameters How accurately are the coordinates read from the geometry ( 'WALL THICKNESS')? How many times are the elements divided ( 'ACCURACY') and how small are they allowed to become ( 'ELEMENT SIZE')? What is the aspect ratio of neighbouring elements ( 'OPTIONS' 'SMOOTHING') and between the edges of a single element ( 'OPTIONS' 'RATIO')? Further Functions Automatic core generation ( 'CORE GENERATION') Removing materials for enmeshment These two functions require steps in the preprocessor in advance. Generating the mesh for solver 5 ( 'MESH FOR SOLVER 5') (filling simulation, page 16) Further Steps Control the number of cells ( 'CALCULATE' window 'CALCULATED MESH SIZE'). Generate the mesh ( 'GENERATE' window 'CALCULATED MESH SIZE'). Display the mesh visually, including control points, and check it for critical areas ( 'POST- PROCESSOR' 'RESULTS' tab 'GEOMETRY' 'MESH_QUALITY', <CONTROL POINTS>).

16 MAGMASOFT 4.4 REFERENCE GUIDE 1.7 Simulation Calculation / 'simulation' The 'simulation' menu generally contains several entries, from which you select 'shape casting/ batch production'. You perform the following definition of simulation type and simulation parameters successively: By activating the 'ok' button you always reach the next window. What Can Be Simulated? Filling of the mold ( 'CALCULATE FILLING') Cooling and solidification of the melt ( 'CALCULATE SOLIDIFICATION') Defining Simulation Parameters material class / group ( 'MATERIAL DEFINITIONS', optional: 'SELECT DATA' and 'PARAMETERS') heat transfer ( 'HEAT TRANSFER DEFINITIONS', optional: 'SELECT DATA' and 'PA- RAMETERS') mold filling ( 'FILLING DEFINITIONS'). Here, three solvers are available ('USE SOLVER' 'SOLVER 3, 4, 5') solidification ( 'SOLIDIFICATION DEFINITIONS'). Here, four solvers are available ('USE SOLVER' 'SOLVER 1, 2, 3, 4') optional: batch casting ( 'CYCLE DEFINITIONS') Prepare Results Prepare certain results for presentation in the postprocessor ( 'FAST POSTPROCESSING PREPARATION') How to Start and Control the Simulation? With an information window ( 'ONLINE JOB SIMULATION CONTROL'), from which you start simulation ( 'START'), stop simulation ( 'STOP') and start the simulation again ( 'RESTART') store simulation at any time ( 'DUMP') You also have a permanent overview of

CH. 1: THE POSSIBILITIES OF MAGMASOFT 17 fill rate / fraction solid ( 'PERCENTAGE') temperature distribution ( 'ONLINE CURVES') 1.8 Presentation of Results / Postprocessor To display results of the simulation calculation based on the geometry, select 'postprocessor' from the main menu and the entry 'on geometry'. At first, the geometry is converted into a binary ACIS file. In doing so, you can define a polygon reduction. Then you can control the result presentation easily, using tabs (constantly available) and buttons. After the conversion, you can prepare certain results for faster presentation ( 'PREPARE FAST POSTPROCESSING'). Several functions that are explained in the following are available via small buttons and/or key shortcuts, too. With these you can also: move the view, zoom the view and make it fit to the main screen choose a wireframe presentation change quickly between result pictures choose a background color Select Result Type Choose ( 'RESULTS' tab) between: Filling simulation: temperature, velocity and pressure field ('FILLING') Solidification simulation: temperature, fraction liquid and fraction solid ('SOLIDIFICATION') Mold filling criteria functions Solidification criteria functions Tracer results ('TRACER') Mesh Quality Check the enmeshment of materials and control points ( 'RESULTS' tab 'GEOMETRY' 'MESH_QUALITY', <CONTROL POINTS>). Possible critical cells are highlighted with co-

18 MAGMASOFT 4.4 REFERENCE GUIDE lors. If there are critical cells that are specifically related to solver 5, these are shown in an individual color. User Results You can combine the results automatically created by the program with the help of an expression editor and thus create user-defined results ( 'RESULTS' tab 'USER RESULTS'). These user results are stored and processed within special datasets. Export You can export the geometry that is currently shown in the main window, e.g. to an STL file ( 'PROJECT' 'EXPORT').

20 MAGMASOFT 4.4 REFERENCE GUIDE 1.9 Databases / 'database' By selecting 'database' you get to the database main window, from which you administrate the data. To work with these data, buttons in dialogue fields and menu entries are available at several locations of the program. With these, you can directly access databases and integrate data in running processes, e.g. construction or simulation. Which Databases are Available? To ensure the availability of data for different projects and users, the following databases are distinguished: 'MAGMA' (access for all user groups; data can be read but not modified): DATABASE MAGMA 'Global' (access for all user groups; data can be read and modified): DATABASE GLO- BAL 'User' (access for individual user; this user can read and modify data): DATABASE USER 'Project' (can be created for each version of a project, is located in the directory of the corresponding version) DATABASE PROJECT (Name). The different MAGMASOFT databases contain all data needed for simulation (e.g. material data, heat transfer files, filter materials, geometry elements etc.) save time and effort, since a lot of manual input can be replaced by database entries. can be adapted to individual requirements. can be protected against unwanted changes You can invoke existing data from a database as well as add newly created data to the database, e.g. geometry elements. These can be invoked at any time.
