INSTITUTIONAL CARTOGRAPHY VISUALIZER OF THE NATIONAL GEOGRAPHICAL INSTITUTE OF SPAIN Alfredo del Campo García, Manuel Carbajo Ruiz National Atlas of Spain Department National Geographical Institute of Spain Madrid (Spain) This software includes the possibility of visualize and interact with the 3 possible ways to show a region, at the same time. These 3 ways are 2-D, 2.5-D (perspectives with the possibility of interactive rotation around any turn axis, and translation), and 3-D (flight simulator). The users can visualize some levels of information at the same time, handling the transparency levels of each one. It accepts queries to its database, so the users are being able to create their own cartography, with their particular information and with their own way to representation. The software we present, make possible to create and export, or import GPS routes. These routes can be studied from different points of view, its length, its coordinates in different cartography projections, its cross section There is a flight simulator over the 3-D terrain model with the level of information putted on top. It s possible to visualize our own routes. All this, are displayed with an easy interface and a nice appearance. SUMMARY This presentation shows the functioning of a cartographic visualization, interactive and multimedia. It works with topographical cartography and with thematic cartography. It has been created by the National Geographical Institute of Spain. This application lets show cartography on a two dimensional way (2D), on perspective and with flight simulation. It allows interact with geographical information, database and integrated multimedia resources (photograph, video, music, etc). The information in this application is included by other load application, which allows created a teacher CD or DVD with the contents and logic components that are considered necessary. A future adaptation of this development and its load application, to web publication is predicted. PREVIOUS At 2000, with the CD National Atlas of Spain. El Medio Físico 1. Módulo Cartográfico, the National Geographical Institute, beginning the production of electronic and multimedia atlas (digital ANE: CD, DVD and WWW). This CD included the reference cartography contents in the first volume of the ANE (National Atlas of Spain). The information has been divided into 18 layers, exiting an ortho-image indeed (100 meters of spatial resolution) for the Spain 1: map. The users could generate his own layers from the MDT (200 meters of resolution), contents in the application. As something original, the visualization properties (transparency, brightness, saturation and tone) of any layer, saved or calculated, can be edited. It allows draw routes, create sections and visualize any combination of the layers of the 1: map. The CD contains many databases: the toponymic index of the 1: map and the main part of the geographical data table included in the instalment printed (3a and 3b). This allows users to query a glossary of geographical terms and, in the Spanish maps 1: and 1: , include his own notes even. These notes could be showed in its right position. A bit later, becomes the CD National Atlas of Spain. El Medio Físico 2. Módulo Temático, where is thematic cartography with different aspects of the Spanish environment: Image and Landscape, geophysics, geology and relief, climatology, water resources, study of soils, biogeography, protected areas and marine medio. Finally, at 2002, it is issued a geographical navigator 2D/3D of the Comunidad Autónoma de Madrid. This CD contains the National Geographical Institute cartography 1: and 1: raster of Madrid. It contains also the 1:25.000, 1: and 1: MDT, and the ortho-image of Madrid and the 1: ortho-photographs of selected areas.
Toponymic database and multimedia resources are also included. Something new in this application was a flight simulator. Finally, it has been tried that the look of the interface doesn t have resemblance to typical Windows menus. New icons, buttons and controls are being designed. MAIN FEATURES
Load application and generation personalized CD-DVD The Oracle 9i Spatial graphic files (BCN/MAPA model), and its integration with raster and vector more common data (GeoTIFF, TIFF, DGN, SHP), are manager by a friendly and institutional interface. Personalized CD-DVD can be created not only selecting contents and functionalities, but also choosing the look and feel of the interface. This job are implemented as a Save as function type. SIGHT: general features It allows the use of raster and vector data models in the three modules (2D, 2.5D, 3D). The application works with own formats to protect the information (IGN property), and in native format when the client has bought the information. The alphanumerical and multimedia databases provided by the IGN, are protected to prevent a dishonest use. The three modules are perfectly integrated, and it synchronization is optional. It allows show the same data format and the same information (geographical information layers and alphanumerical and multimedia resources databases and its metadata) in the three modules at the same time. The map view can be exported as a geo-index raster (GeoTIFF). It s possible to export with different resolution (more than the screen indeed). It s under an obligation to include the copyright and water marks, or any other copyright sing protect system SIGHT: cartographical usefulness The map key is showed in an independent window and is vector. It allows print and it is automatically generated with changes in contents or visualization features in each layer, calculated layers included. SIGHT: management and edition of layers Calculated layers from MDT can save with its created parameters. It allows insert icons, raster or vector, from any imported libraries. It also allows put on top different layers with transparency levels. The next figure shows a raster ortho-photography, put on top are a vector layer (municipios).
SIGHT: database usefulness The existing database can be update (at a field or record level) regarding that delete or change actions will generate a new database. This is a way to protect the original database. It allows link records form database to graphic entities (raster or vector). The locate coordinates icons load to the multimedia resources database, is possible put it up graphically. It allows query attributes from a vector graphic entity choosing graphically, and from a raster graphic entity. It also allows query from different geographical databases. The graphic entities choose, vector and raster, can make by attributes, locating in the map any record from the database (one or more, making a queue to its location). Finally, the results of a query can be printed. SIGHT: MDT usefulness Calculated layers are available to any module of the application. The sections from poly-lines are also available to any module. The points for this sections, can be selected on any visualization modes without distinction and alternately.
The generation, drawing and putting contour lines on are defined by the users. They also define the limit values of the clusters to generate slope maps and hypsometric inks. The clusters for these inks are defined by the users, chosen automatically the ends of this clusters of all extension and not only of the showed area. The colours are in a continuous range, fixed the colours of the end of the clusters or the middle areas. The next figure shows, on the left, a hypsometric with fixed colour clusters, and on the right another hypsometric with interpolation colour clusters. This application allows save global adjustments of a project and different adjustments of a project for each user. It is possible works, not only with the showed area, but also with all extension, or any area selected. Another MDT usefulness is calculating show and hide areas. The time processing is really fast, and there is a new parameter which is the maximum distance that is possible watch. This is to prevent, for example, the result was from Los Pirineos to Tarifa. This parameter is available and the user can consider the human eye, or an aerial, etc.
SIGHT: flight simulator The flight Simulator allows fly automatically to a fixed destination (graphically or across a query from an associated database). The airship movement and the camera movement are disconnected. It also allows work with different synchronized cameras in different windows (with different information layer in each window indeed). It allows define paths in planimetry and in altimetry, with fly, camera, and model controls. These parameters are available for the user. It also allow save routes and configurations. It is possible fly around a point in a circular way. The information is showed in floating labels with different heights and different features according to their categorization. It allows do hyperlinks (linking graphics entities and locations or other graphics entities as texts) to databases (of multimedia or general resources: toponymy, alphanumeric data, etc.) The application generates textures for the sky, with clouds and fog. Finally it allows export the fly to a video file with high resolution.
