4 Geography Geography: Key Skills and Concepts EYFS KS1 & KS2 1. Geography NOT taught as discrete subject. 2. Taught within Specific Area of Understanding of the World: The World 1. The Geography curriculum and its teaching should inspire a life-long curiosity in pupils. 2. Teaching will equip children with knowledge of : diverse places, people and resources natural and human environments earth s key physical and human processes 3. Knowledge of location of globally significant places- both terrestrial and marine 4. Processes that give rise to geographical features of the world 5. Geographical skills - FOCUS Collect, analyse and communicate with a range of data gathered through fieldwork Interpret a range of sources of geographical data incl. maps, diagrams, globes, aerial photographs and digitally Communicate geographical information in a variety of ways incl.maps, numerical and quantitative skills and writing at length 6. Russia) and N and S America. Focus is environmental regions, key physical and human characteristics, countries and major cities. LK Name and locate countries and cities of the UK, geographical regions and their identifying characteristics, key topographical features (hills, mountains, coasts and rivers) and land-use patterns and how some of these aspects have changed over time. LK Identify the position and significance of latitude, longitude, Equator, northern and southern hemisphere, Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Artic and Antartic, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones incl day and night. Use of ordinance survey maps.- GS In fieldwork observe measure, record and present the human and physical features of a local area using a range of methods incl. sketch maps, plans, graphs &digital technologies- GS Y6 Autumn Y6 Summer Y3 Autumn Y5 Summer Y6 Autumn Y6 Spring Time Allocation: There is no statutory time allocation for Geography within the 2014 NC. Agreed time for KS2 is 45 hours per year, which equates to 15 hours for each topic. Units to be blocked and a clear set of outcomes linked to key historical skills and concepts. They know that other children don t always enjoy the same things, and are sensitive to this. They know about similarities and differences between themselves and others, and among families, communities and traditions. Key Stage 1 Subject Content National Curriculum Objectives Topic Coverage H1 Changes within living memory. Where appropriate these should be used to reveal aspects of change in national life. Y1 Spring H2 Events beyond living memory with significant national or global significance e.g. Great Fire of London. Y2 Autumn H3 Lives of significant individuals in the past. Some should be used to compare aspects of life in different periods e.g. Y2 Spring Elizabeth1st & Queen Victoria, Christopher Columbus and Neil Armstrong, Mary Seacole/Florence Nightingale and Edith Cavell. H4 Significant historical events, people and places in own locality. H5 H6 Key Stage 2 Subject Content Changes in Britain from the Stone Age to Iron Age. Can include Hunter gatherers and early farming. Bronze age religion, technology, travel Stonehenge. Iron age hill forts- art, culture, farming Roman Empire- impact on Britain.
