1 Learning Objective: Use photographs to find out about a foreign country National Curriculum links: Geography (PoS 1a, 2a, 2c, 2d, 3a) Maths (Ma2 Number 5a) PSHE (1b, 4c) Resources: Google Earth (download for free) or a world map poster Hot and cold photocards Rural and urban photocards Uganda and Kenya photocards Post-it notes Starter: Introduce the concept of a world map either through locating the United Kingdom on Google Earth by zooming in from a world view to the shape of the United Kingdom, or by showing a world map poster and finding the United Kingdom. Show hot and cold photocards and discuss each in turn. Sort the pictures into hot and cold places by encouraging the children to look carefully at the pictures to see what people are wearing, what the weather looks like, what sort of plants are growing etc. Using your world map, show the children where in the world these pictures were taken. Explain that these photographs represent what that place is like some of the time and is a picture of just one place there in order not to reinforce stereotypes, whilst also providing an image to hold onto. Show rural and urban photocards and discuss each as before. This time introduce the terms urban and rural and sort the pictures according to these categories. Encourage the children to recognise differences between rural and urban settings such as the number of people, the traffic, the buildings (size and materials) etc. Use your word map again to show where these pictures were taken. 2 Main Activity: Use Google Earth again, this time to travel from the United Kingdom to Kenya or Uganda. You could do this as a quick bit of drama with the children pretending they are on a plane whilst you, as the pilot, talk them through where they are flying over and what they can see out of the window. Focus on the photographs which show Kenya and Uganda. Discuss where they would fit into the hot / cold, urban / rural categories. o Explain that Uganda and Kenya have a tropical climate which means that it is very hot and dry for some months but also has two rainy seasons where it rains very hard. There are also mountainous areas where it is much cooler. Independent Work: LA Work as a small group to look more closely at the photographs of Kenya and Uganda. Ask the children to think of questions they would like to know the answers to e.g. why is there no glass in the windows? Why is the ground dusty? Write down any questions the children want to ask either on a poster or on a post-it note stuck to the photograph. Core MA Ask children to work in pairs. Provide each pair with a photograph of Kenya or Uganda and ask them to work together to think of questions they would like to know the answers to and write these on post-it notes to stick to the photograph. Ask children to work in pairs. Pass the question to their partner to see if they can try to answer it by looking carefully at the picture. Plenary: Share some of the children s questions.
