INEQUALITY AND ECONOMIC GROWTH: EVIDENCE FROM ARGENTINA S PROVINCES USING SPATIAL ECONOMETRICS Alejandro Cañadas Midwest Student Summit on Space, Health and Population Economics on April 18 and 19, 2008 The Ohio State University
Research Questions 1) Does inequality in income distribution affect economic growth in the provinces of Argentina? 2) Is the relationship between inequality and growth influenced by the spatial distribution of inequality in the provinces of Argentina?
Research Strategy Spatial econometrics techniques to test for the presence of spatial autocorrelation. (Rey and Montouri, 1999; Fingleton, 2006). Framework used by Partridge (2005): Parsimonious model of regional growth. Add control variables to get a more fully specified (base) model.
Positive influence of inequality on growth Inequality may increase the rate of savings and capital accumulation. (Kuznets, 1955; Kaldor, 1956) Inequality may signal opportunities to improve one s income (one s position in the income distribution), through greater work effort and diligence as well as Schumpeterian factors such as entrepreneurship, risktaking and innovation. (Siebert, 1998; Bell and Freeman, 2001)
Negative influence of inequality on growth Imperfect credit or insurance markets. (Galor and Zeira, 1993; Banerjee and Newman, 1993; Aghion et al., 1999; Levine, 2004) Economic strategies that benefit elites rather than middle and lower income groups. (Perotti, 1993; Bertola 1993; Alesina and Rodrik, 1994; Persson and Tabellini, 1994; León 2007) Inequality adversely affects the set of opportunities to (education, distribution of assets and land, political influence, public infrastructure and health). (Sen, 1992; Roemer, 1998; Ferreira, 2001; Bourguignon, Ferreira, and Menéndez 2003)
Negative influence of inequality on growth Social conflict that leads to crime and illegal activities, which discourage investment and weaken property rights. (Hibbs, 1973; Venieris and Gupta, 1986; Gupta, 1990, Alesina and Perotti, 1996; Benhabib and Rustichini, 1996; Banerjee and Duflo, 2000) Directly unproductive profit-seeking activities. (Bhagwati and Srinivasan,1982; Mauro, 2002) Inequality adversely affects social capital. (Knack and Keefer, 1997; Kawachi, 1997; Nan, 2000; Caramuta, 2005).
Important Considerations Inequality may have a separate effect at the middle versus the tails of the distribution (median voter). (Easterly, 2001) The influence of inequality on economic growth may differ in the short-run and the long-run (Forbes, 2000; Partridge, 2005) or may differ in the rural versus urban areas. (Fallah and Partridge, 2006)

Spatial Autocorrelation Spatial autocorrelation occurs when the spatial distribution of the variable of interest exhibits a systematic pattern (Cliff and Ord 1981). I compute three measures of global spatial autocorrelation: Moran s I (Moran 1948), Geary s c (Geary 1954), and Getis and Ord s G (Getis and Ord, 1992).
Spatial Autocorrelation: Growth Moran's I statistic: strong evidence of positive spatial autocorrelation, which is statistically significant throughout the whole period: Relatively high (low) income provinces tend to be located nearby other high (low) income provinces, more often than would be expected due to random chance. Each province should not be viewed as an independent observation.

Main Results (+) spatial autocorrelation. Long-run relationship between inequality and growth: Negative relationships between, on the one hand, the own province i inequality and inequality in the neighboring provinces and, on the other, economic growth in the provinces of Argentina in the period. There exists a separate response related to the Q3 share, which is not consistent with results about the vibrancy of the middle class characteristic of the US.
Interpretation In Argentina, the middle class (Q3) is not as productive as in the US. Effort and resources are diverted to less productive activities, such as rent-seeking. Higher levels of inequality in a province and its neighbors increase the levels of distorting policies, corruption, crime, and social disturbances, which disrupt growth.
My Story Higher levels of inequality in a province and its neighbors intensify pressures for distorting fiscal transfers and government redistributions and encourage more active rent-seeking activities, with their directly unproductive consequences. Crime and social unrest threaten the relative wellbeing of the middle class, which utilizes its own resources to survive and seek middle-class rents, thereby redirecting resources away from productive uses and reducing the rate of economic growth.
