5 IGS & GSDI Membership International Geospatial Society (IGS) Private (individual) members division of GSDI Formed at GSDI-12 in Singapore Currently has 200+ members 57 countries 67 IGS members from 16 African states! 6 Participation in National & Regional SDI Various GSDI Members are directly involved in national & regional SDI developments in Europe (INSPIRE), the Americas (USA, Canada, GeoSUR), Middle East/India, Asia-Pacific (PCGIAP, Singapore, Australia/New Zealand), and Africa UN ECA EIS-Africa RCMRD National Space Research and Development Agency, Nigeria 6

7 Participation in International & Global Initiatives JBGIS Member of the Joint Board of GIS UNSDI GSDI have been represented at UNSDI meetings from the beginning of the initiative, as official observers UNGIWG GSDI have external partner status, acting in an advisory role (workshops, etc.) UN GGIM GSDI is represented as an advisory partner (OGC, EUROGI, Esri, take part) Committee on EO Satellites (CEOS) WGISS GSDI is represented at conferences & workshops GEO/GEOSS different members serve on different committees & working groups + attend the major conferences + endorses and contributes to The GEOSS Component and Service Registry The GEOSS Standards and Interoperability Registry 7

9 Legal & Socioeconomic Activities Latest L&SE Committee project is to attempt definition of a global geospatial data licensing framework. Conducting survey of existing licensing frameworks, globally (still underway). Presented preliminary results at workshop at GSDI-12 in Quebec, Canada, May Also identifying cost-benefit and socio-economic benefit studies/reports for the GIKnet. 9

10 Capacity Building Led by the GSDI Societal Impacts Committee Administer the GSDI Small Grants Award Program since 2003 in cooperation with URISA GISCorps and financial support from USGS Since its launch in 2003, the Small Grants Program has provided support to more than 100 projects across the globe. Establishment of Geoportal (metadata and Clearinghouse Node) with Open Source Solutions for Environment Resources Management and Conservation, Horn of Africa Regional Environment Centre and Network (HoAREC/N) The 2nd General Congress of the GIS Society of Ethiopia - Promoting the need for National Spatial Data Infrastructure of Ethiopia, Geographic Information Systems Society of Ethiopia (GISSE) Small Grants Program Funding from 2013 from USGS has ended due to budget restrictions we are seeking new sponsors! 12

13 SDI Technical Support Standards development OGC is one of the most active GSDI members and provides significant ICT support to the GSDI itself. SDI Cookbook Work began in 1999 (under FGDC leadership) Now online as a Wiki that can be updated by GSDI members chapters have named editors Chapter 10 - Standards 13

14 SDI Information Resources Geographic Information Knowledge Network (GIKnet) Aim is to enhance communication and freely share knowledge among professionals in the global GI community. GIKNet Community Registry permits individuals, government agencies, NGOs, companies and other institutions to record and publish details about themselves and submit relevant documents to the Spatial Docs Depot. GIKNet information can be searched and accessed via a search facility in the Spatial Docs Depot. A comprehensive list of GI/SDI related discussion lists can be accessed from a single reference page.
