1 AP Chemistry Permian High School Instructor: Dr. Tesfaye Degefa Room Number: S-3 Course Description: This course is designed to provide a first-year college chemistry experience, both conceptually and in the laboratory. It includes all of the College Board s description for AP Chemistry. My main goal of the class is to develop independent, critical and analytical thinkers with problem solving skills. To accommodate varied learning styles I provide various teaching styles. Lecture, discussions, open ended questioning techniques, various activities, labs associated with the concepts being taught, demonstrations, paired readings, problem solving and what if situations are provided to foster thinking and learning. Prerequisite: Because of the nature of this course and the amount of new material that will be covered, a strong preparatory background in Chemistry-I (especially PreAP Chemistry) is a requirement. Moreover, mathematics is an integral part of this class. Problem solving strategies will be stressed through-out the year and this course requires the student be able to solve problems with and without a calculator. Tutoring: If you have any questions or seek tutorial help, please don t hesitate to contact me as soon as possible. I am committed to help you in your learning and success. Tutoring is available from 8:00 8:40 AM (Monday to Friday) in room S-3 or after school by appointment. Tests: Each unit test will consist of multiple choice questions and Free Response Questions that are appropriate for that particular unit. Essay questions, graphing analysis, and equations may also appear on the test. For review purposes before the AP exam, three old AP exams will be given to the students over a period of four weeks. The tests will be scored just like an AP exam and gone over with the students. 2. Quizzes: Quizzes will be given throughout a unit to test for understanding of the curriculum/concept. 3. Homework: Problems will be assigned at the beginning of a new chapter. The problems will be due close to the end of the chapter. This allows the students to have read the chapter before commencing to do work and any open discussions that will occur during class time. Multiple-choice questions and Free Response Questions are used to supplement each chapter. 1

2 4. Laboratory Notebook: Lab report must be written in the following order: Title I. Introduction: The introduction must contain information concerning the lab. Definitions, equations, statements and drawings are placed here. On the average this will contain at least three paragraphs. At the end of the introduction in bold letters will be the Objective of the Lab. You will find this stated somewhere within the lab. II. Procedure: In your own words rewrite the lab procedure. Brief statements are fine as long as they convey the meaning and you can follow along during the lab. III. Data Table or Pictures: This is the area where tables and graphs will be placed. All graphs must be labeled with a title and x and y - axis labeled appropriately. All calculations for any part of the lab is placed here. If a chart is used, number the chart and then number your calculations to coincide with the table. All formulas, labels and significant figures must be used. Students will place pictures that are of the lab and drawings of beakers containing molecules at the molecular level at various stages throughout the experiment. IV. Discussion: Explain all calculations which produced data table. Explanation of data and results All questions must be written out and the answers underneath them. V. Conclusion: In one sentence, no more than two, what is the theme of the lab? What did you discover? Grading System: Test 40% Lab. reports, Quizzes, and Notebook Checks 30% Homework and Assignments 20% Participation 10% School Supplies: Writing utensil (black or blue pen or pencil with a good eraser) Box of tissues Hand sanitizer Package of index cards Package of 4 AAA Batteries Gallon of distilled water OR Ream of white computer paper OR Notebook paper 2

3 Structure of the course: AP Chemistry is built around the following six big ideas and seven science practices: Big Idea 1: The chemical elements are fundamental building materials of matter, and all matter can be understood in terms of arrangements of atoms. These atoms retain their identity in chemical reactions. Big Idea 2: Chemical and physical properties of materials can be explained by the structure and the arrangement of atoms, ions, or molecules and the forces between them. Big Idea 3: Changes in matter involve the rearrangement and/or reorganization of atoms and/or the transfer of electrons. Big Idea 4: Rates of chemical reactions are determined by details of the molecular collisions. Big Idea 5: The laws of thermodynamics describe the essential role of energy and explain and predict the direction of changes in matter. Big Idea 6: Any bond or intermolecular attraction that can be formed can be broken. These two processes are in a dynamic competition, sensitive to initial conditions and external perturbations. Science Practice 1: The student can use representations and models to communicate scientific phenomena and solve scientific problems. Science Practice 2: The student can use mathematics appropriately. Science Practice 3: The student can engage in scientific questioning to extend thinking or to guide investigations within the context of the AP course. Science Practice 4: The student can plan and implement data collection strategies in relation to a particular scientific question Science Practice 5: The student can perform data analysis and evaluation of evidence. Science Practice 6: The student can work with scientific explanations and theories. Science Practice 7: The student is able to connect and relate knowledge across various scales, concepts, and representations in and across domains. The majority of big idea one, two and three were covered in Chemistry-I and Pre-AP Chemistry. However, big idea four, five and six were not covered in any great depth and will be new to you. The science practices will seem second nature to you, since they were embedded in the laboratory investigations, problems and projects from Chemistry-I and Pre-AP Chemistry. 3

7 Classroom Policies I would like to lead a dynamic, respectful and disciplined classroom, and facilitate the learning process. In order to do this I have established some policies for our classroom. Class Rules: 1. Be in your seat, working when the bell rings. 2. Be responsible for your class materials. 3. Follow direction when they are given. 4. Show respect for yourself, your classmates, and the learning environment. 5. Obey all the school rules. Consequences: Your behavior is your choice. If you choose to break a rule, the punishment will fit the violation and will be dealt with as I see. Any form of disruptive or violent behavior will result in an immediate referral. Note taking: Class room activities, homework, assignments and/or announcements will be posted or shown using power point presentations. You are responsible for following all instructions. You will have the option of taking notes in class during the lecture. You will be also given guiding key vocabulary and objectives at the beginning of each unit. At the end of each unit, you are expected to complete the definitions and write a unit summary. There will be at least one quiz at the end of each topic and one compressive test at the end of each unit. Collecting extra points: Extra points will be given based on students active engagement to learning and appropriate conduct in classroom activities and solely based on the teacher's discretion. Homework/Assignments: Homework/assignments are intentionally designed to enhance the development of higher level of critical thinking and problem solving skills. Thus, homework/assignments must be individually done. Copying work of others will result in an immediate grade of zero for the activities involved. Lab Safety: Lab safety will be discussed in detail at beginning of the school year as well as prior to each lab session with specific information related to the procedure. Violation of lab safety results in 0% lab report grade. Disruptive behavior will be classified as unsafe lab performance and will be graded accordingly. Absences: It is the responsibility of the student to see what he/she missed and to make arrangements to do the makeup work. All work from classes missed must be completed within 1 class day for each class day missed. 7

8 Late homework/assignment, lab report and makeup work grading: The following grade penalties are applied to any late work: Less than 24-hour late, maximum grade is 80% hours late, maximum is 70% 3 4 days maximum grade is 50% more than 4 days late, maximum grade is 25% Corrections: You are required to correct tests, quizzes, and assignments that receive grades below a 70. You may correct these up to a grade of 70. It is important that you understand the material and must correct your misunderstandings. Tutoring: Students are strongly encouraged to seek tutorial/remedial help from me in case of learning difficulties. Tutoring is available from 8:00 8:40 AM (Monday to Friday) in room S-3. You must sign the tutoring log and set up a time with me in advance. If you make arrangements for tutorial help, PLEASE keep the commitment. Helpful hints for success: Expectation: 1. Show active participation 2. Have a regular study schedule 3. Complete all your homework/assignments/reports/projects on time 4. Do all corrections on time 1. High level of academic performance 2. Take responsibilities for your learning 3.
