The nuclear specialty in Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) was built in 1956 in Beijing College of Geology (BCG). Afterwards, the nuclear specialty in BCG was migrated to CDUT. CDUT has had great achievement in student training for atomic industry of China. In this paper we present ideas about improving education quality of the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel by using superiority of Chengdu University of Technology. The main ideas are as following: 1) sharing course resources; 2) 1 Copyright 2013 by ASME
2 sharing laboratories and instruments resources; 3) sharing information. KEY WORDS Education, specialty, Chengdu University of Technology, nuclear 1 INTRODUCTION Chengdu University of Technology (CDUT) is one of Sichuan province s key universities, which supervised by Sichuan province and the Ministry of Land and Resources. CDUT locates in Chengdu; Chengdu is a famous historic and cultural city known as the land of abundance. The President of CDUT is Professor Shijun Ni since The former Chengdu University of Technology began life as Chengdu Institute of Geological Exploration (CDIGE) established in CDIGE merged part of department of Oil and second department, and whole third department of Beijing College of Geology (BCG). Now BCG is China Geology University, Beijing. CDIGE renamed Chengdu College of Geology (CDCG) in CDCG renamed Chengdu College of Technology (CDCT) in Sichuan Commercial Higher Professional College and Nonferrous Metal Geology Staff University merged into CDCG in Meanwhile, Chengdu College of Geology renamed Chengdu University of Technology. There are over 37,000 undergraduate students, over 4,000 master and PhD candidates. In 2012, The Ministry of Education of China permitted Chengdu University of Technology establish the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering. It is a new specialty for CDUT, and belongs to College of Nuclear Technology and Automation Engineering (CNTAE). 2 NUCLEAR MAJORS IN CDUT Nuclear specialties of CDUT establish in College of Nuclear Technology and Automation Engineering, Chengdu University of Technology, which originated from the department of nuclear resource and nuclear technological engineering established in Beijing College of Geology in There were three specialties including the radioactive geology specialty, the radioactive geophysical exploration specialty, and the rare element geochemistry specialty in the department. The department was key department in national key colleges. The radioactive geology specialty was merged with the rare element geochemistry specialty in The department offered master degree program in Then, the department migrated to Chengdu in CDCG offered master degree program and doctor degree program of the radioactive geology and exploration specialty in 1981 an in 1984 respectively. The radioactive geology and exploration specialty become key subject of Sichuan province and the ministry of geology and mineral resources in 1992 and in 1994 respectively. The radioactive geophysical exploration specialty was changed into the nuclear electronics and detector technology specialty in The nuclear electronics and detector technology specialty was divided into two specialties including the applied nuclear specialty and the electronic instrument and detection technology specialty according to specialty catalogue of the State Education Commission in In 1998, the radioactive geology and exploration specialty merged into the mineral detailed survey and exploration specialty as a secondary specialty. Meanwhile, the applied nuclear specialty was changed into the nuclear engineering and nuclear technology specialty, and the electronic instrument and detection technology specialty was changed into 2 Copyright 2013 by ASME
3 the detection and control technology and instrument specialty. CDCT offered master degree program of the applied nuclear technology again, and offered master degree program of the detection and measurement technology and instrument specialty. CDCT offered doctor program of in CDCT again offered undergraduate program of the geochemistry specialty in The geochemistry specialty in CDUT originated from the rare element geochemistry specialty. CDUT offered undergraduate program of the radiation protection and environment protection specialty in 2007, and offered undergraduate program of the nuclear chemical and fuel engineering specialty in According 2012 version undergraduate subject catalogue(1), CDUT offers undergraduate program of all nuclear engineering excepting the engineering physics now. CDUT offers undergraduate, master degree and doctor degree program in nuclear engineering specialties. The applied nuclear specialty, the geochemistry specialty and the mineral detailed survey and exploration specialty are advantage and characteristics subject in College of Nuclear Technology and Automation Engineering, Chengdu University of Technology. There are Sichuan key laboratory of applied nuclear techniques in geosciences, nation level engineering and practice education center of nuclear resource exploration, and Sichuan experiment education demonstration center of nuclear resources and nuclear technology, and 21 practice bases in College of Nuclear Technology and Automation Engineering. The practice bases is jointly constructed by CNTAE and companies. These laboratory, center and practice bases supply research and education platforms for teachers and students. 3 SHARING COURSES 3.1 Courses for the nuclear chemical and fuel engineering specialty Nuclear energy is a major energy source and has the highest potential to fulfill world s energy demand. Meanwhile, nuclear energy is a green energy source. However, nuclear energy is the most technology integration system, so we need more mental workers for its development. Before young scientists and engineers become qualified researchers and workers in the nuclear field, they need study and train in colleges and factories. These groups of researchers are very important, because they will be the main dynamic force for the New Nuclear Age in the 21st Century (2). We design course schematic for the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering at CDUT for above goal. The main courses, experiment and practice education is listed in table 1 for students of the Grade 2012 who study the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering. Table 1. 6 3.2 Other nuclear engineering specialties at CDUT The ministry of education of China change the 1997 version undergraduate subject catalogue to the 2012 version catalogue in 2012(1). The number of specialties of the nuclear engineering subject is reduced from 7 to 4, so CDUT mergers some nuclear specialties. The four specialties include the specialty of nuclear engineering and technology, the specialty of radiation protection and nuclear safety, the specialty of engineering physics, and the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering. CDUT offers undergraduate program of above nuclear engineering specialty excepting the specialty of engineering physics now. Only Tsinghua University offers undergraduate program of the specialty of engineering physics in China. Therefore, CDUT almost offers whole undergraduate program for the nuclear specialty. Now CDUT offers undergraduate, master degree and doctor degree program in nuclear engineering specialties. CDUT has master degree education base of the nuclear science and technology subject at the first level discipline. CDUT owns some doctor degree education base of the nuclear science and technology subject at the second level discipline, and CDUT declares doctor degree education base of the nuclear science and technology subject at the first level discipline now. 3.3 Sharing resources The nuclear science and technology is prior disciplines for CDUT. There are long history and accumulation for nuclear education in CDUT. The first nuclear specialty of CDUT established in Many textbook and monographs which written by teachers of CDUT are published. There are rich education experiences by nuclear education practices over 56 years in CDUT. There are many instruments for research and education in nuclear field by investment and accumulation, although some old instruments have been eliminated. There are some nuclear science and technology laboratories for education in College of Nuclear Technology and Automation Engineering, Chengdu University of Technology. In addition, there are Sichuan key laboratory of applied nuclear techniques in geosciences, nation level engineering and practice education center of nuclear resource exploration, and Sichuan experiment education demonstration center of nuclear resources and nuclear technology, and 21 practice bases in the college. Therefore, we should share course resources, share laboratories and instruments resources, and share information. CDUT has shared common curriculum and subject foundation curriculum between difference specialties. Fundamental radiochemistry and radiation environment science basis are specialize courses of the specialty of radiation protection and nuclear safety and the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering of CDUT. There are nuclear radiation detection method, radiation protection, fundamental quantum mechanics, radiation physics and fundamental quantum mechanics course in the specialty of nuclear engineering and technology, the specialty of radiation protection and nuclear safety, and the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering at CDUT. Therefore, we can unify code, credit and class hours between difference nuclear engineering specialties for sharing course resources. In CDUT, there are a number of nuclear education laboratories. These laboratories can be used in nuclear courses such as radiation environment science basis, nuclear radiation detection method, radiation protection, radiation physics and fundamental quantum mechanics course, etc. The mass spectrometry laboratories of the geochemistry specialty can be used in course of vacuum and mass spectrometry. Therefore, we can share laboratories and instruments resources. 6 Copyright 2013 by ASME
7 The specialty of nuclear engineering and technology and the specialty of radiation protection and nuclear safety have longer history than the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering at CDUT, especially the specialty of nuclear engineering and technology. These specialty own more specialize and job information the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel engineering. However, these specialties are nuclear engineering majors. All nuclear engineering specialties have generality in the employee, courses, practice, etc. Therefore, we should share information between nuclear engineering specialties at CDUT. The geological science and technology specialties of Chengdu University of Technology have obvious superiority in China. The authors think that the specialty of nuclear chemical and fuel shall design one or two course which is interdisciplinary between nuclear engineering specialties and geological specialty. no. 10zxnk01), fund of Education Reform Class of Southwest University of Science and Technology International Training Model of Professional courses (Grant No. 10xn0010).
