He noted that the Union should strengthen its connections to the other internationalbodieslikeunesco/icsuandiso.thesecretarygeneral,christopheisenmengersittnerfirstexpressed histhankstotheprevioussecretarygeneral,ronreid,forhishelpandassistanceintransferingthetaskofthesecretary General of the Union. He also thanked the French Vacuum Society for organizing an excellent ECM 117 and the organizers of IVC 19 for an exciting conference and for the flawless organizations of all IUVSTA meetings related therewith.thankswerealsoexpressedtotheitalianvacuumsocietyfororganizinganexcellentecm118. BeforeECM118wasadjourned,thehistoryandthemainfieldsoftheItalianVacuumSociety,whichisnow named"italiansocietyforscience&technology"waspresentedbythecouncillorofitaly,espeditovassallo. DirectlyaftertheadjournmentofECM118,the2 nd annualgeneralmeetingoftheunion(agm2)washeldin whichtheannualaccountsforthefinancialyear2013andthebudgetforthefinancialyear2014wereunanimously adopted. AfterthesuccessfulcompletionoftheSundaymorningmeetingstheparticipantswereinvitedtohavelunch andtocontinuediscussions.alldelegatesagreedthatthiswasanexcellentandproductivemeetingandarelooking forwardtomeetingagainatecm119thisfallindubrovnik. 3 IUVSTANEWSBULLETIN IVC-19/ICSS-15 in conjunction with ICN+T 2013, CIP 2013, ITFPC 2013, MIATEC 2013 and RSD 2013 Paris, 9-13 September 2013 Figure1 Following Stockholm in 2007 and Beijing in 2010, the 19 th International Vacuum Congress (IVC19) and 15 th International Conference on Solid Surfaces (ICSS15) wereheldinparisfrom9to13september2013.they were held in conjunction with the International ConferenceonNanoscience+Technology(ICN+T2013) and four regional European meetings: Innovations in ThinFilmProcessingandCharacterisation(ITFPC2013); Magnetron, Ion Processing & Arc Technologies EuropeanConference(MIATEC2013);19 th International Colloquium on Plasma Processes (CIP 2013) and ReactiveSputterDeposition(RSD2013),thusallowing to gather scientific communities working in closely relatedfields. To foster cooperation between European Vacuum Societies, this series of conference have been jointly organized for the first time by a consortium of 9societiesfromBelgium,Croatia,CzechRepublic,France,Hungary,Portugal,Slovakia,SloveniaandUK,coordinatedbytheFrench VacuumSociety. Figure2 The programme of IVC19 and partner conferences consisted of scientific presentations, short courses,atechnicalexhibitionandindustrialpresentations.over2500participantscomingfrom 62countries(Figure1)aroundtheworldattendedthecongress.Astrongparticipationof studentsmustbeunderlinedinthetotalnumberofparticipants(figure2). Scientificprogramme Almost1500scientificpresentationsweredistributedin15paralleloralsessions(979oralcommunicationsin110topicalsub sessions)and3postersessions(482postersfor31topicalsubsessions).5plenaryconferenceswereproposedtotheparticipants: DanShechtman(2011NobelPrizeinChemistry)andAndréBorschberg(SolarImpulseAircraftProject)ontheMondaymorning,and SchouchengZhang(2010EurophysicsPrize),LarsSamuelson(2013IUVSTAPrizeforScience)andJohnGrant(2013IUVSTAPrizefor Technology)ontheTuesdaymorning.The15parallelsessionswereofferingthechoicebetweenthe8thematicscorrespondingto 3 Page

Thisprogramreflectedtheverylargenumberofdisciplinesandcentersofinterestofall theparticipantsofivcandassociatedconferences. Shortcourses Almost120participantswereregisteredtothe5shortcourseswhichwererunning inparallelwiththecongressandlecturedbyleadingworldexperts(figure5): Fundamentalaspectsofreactivemagnetronsputtering,DiederikDepla XRayPhotoelectronSpectroscopy(XPS/ESCA),JohnT.Grant NucleationandGrowthofNanostructures,JoeE.Greene ThinFilmNucleation,GrowthandMicrostructuralEvolution,JoeE.Greene VacuumGasDynamics:Theory,ExperimentsandApplications F.Sharipov,I.Graur,O.Malyshev This high number of participants was mainly due to the high quality of the professorsofthecourses,ofinternationalstatus. Exhibition Anextensivetechnicalexhibitionwasconvenientlylocatedonthesameflooras thelecturehalls.itbroughttogethermorethan110companiescomingfromfrance(46%),europe(44%)orotherpartsoftheworld (10%),whopresentedtheirnewproductsandservicestodelegatesandover400visitors(theexhibitionwasfreeaccess). 5 IUVSTANEWSBULLETIN 72nd IUVSTA Workshop Plasma-assisted vapour deposition of oxide-based thin films and coatings The72 th IUVSTAWorkshopwasheldinthewineregionofsouthernStyriainAustria(SchlossSeggaunearGraz)from6 11April2014anditattracted55attendeesfrom18countries;organizedbytheIUVSTASurfaceEngineeringDivision, withsupportfromthethinfilmandplasmascience&techniquedivisions.theworkshopwasorganizedbyandre Anders(LawrenceBerkeleyNationalLaboratory,Berkeley,CA,USA),RobertFranz(MontanuniversitätLeoben,Austria), ChristianMitterer(MontanuniversitätLeoben,Austria)undJochenSchneider(RWTHAachen,Germany),withadditional supportfromtheaustrianvacuumsociety. Theworkshopaddressedallissuesencounteredinthesynthesisandcharacterisationofoxidebasedthinfilmsand coatings used in various application areas such as optical and hard coatings, transparent conductive oxides, thermochromic and electrochromic thin films, decorative coatings, and photocatalytic films. Its scope was to bring togetherscientistsworkinginthesedifferentareas,tostimulatediscussionsandtocreatesynergies.20leadingscientists fromaustria,belgium,canada,czechrepublic,germany,liechtenstein,singapore,slovenia,southkorea,switzerland, U.K.,andUSAacceptedinvitationstopresenttheirrecentachievementsinthisrapidlygrowingfield.Typicalmethods employedforsynthesisingthesematerialsthatwerediscussedduringtheworkshopincludesputteringtechniques,e.g. magnetronsputtering,pulsedandrfsputteringaswellashighpowerimpulsemagnetronsputtering(hipims)butalso cathodicarcevaporationandplasmaenhancedchemicalvapourdeposition.additional21attendeespresentedtheir workintalksandposterpresentations.ampletimewasplannedandusedfordiscussions. TheworkshopwascomplementedbyaWelcomeReceptiononSundayevening,avisittothehistoricSeggauCastle,the seatofthestyrianbishopricuntil1786andthesummerresidenceofitsbishopsuntilthemid20thcentury,andan eveningwinetastingonwednesdayinthe300yearsoldwinecellarofthecastle.thedetailedworkshopprogramme and pictures can be found at the workshop website The final report is posted at: 5 P age

6 IUVSTANEWSBULLETIN The73 rd IUVSTAworkshopon Nanostructuresontwodimensionalsolids willbeheldineisenerz,provinceofstyria inaustriafromsept.22 nd 26 th Withinthelastdecade,exfoliatedgraphene,anallsurfacematerialwithextraordinaryphysicalproperties,initiatedan extremely fruitful research topic in nanostructure science, namely research on twodimensional (2D) solids. In the meantime,thefamilyof2dmaterialshasbeenextendedbyhexagonalboronnitride,transitionmetaldichalcogenides, silicene,etc.andsharesanalogieswithtopologicalinsulatorsandquasicrystallinethinfilms.besidestheexplorationof those materials' fundamental properties, there is an emerging research community studying the formation of nanostructuresonthem.theaimofthisspecializediuvstaworkshopistodiscussthepotentialoftwodimensional crystallitesandultrathinsolidsastemplatesfornanostructurearraysofmetallic,magnetic,semiconducting,organic, andbiologicalmaterials.topicswillincludesynthesisandcharacterization,surfacediffusiononandbelow2dsolidsas wellaspotentialapplicationsofnanostructurearrayson2dmaterials. The workshop will gather 20 leading experts from Europe, Asia, and the US, as well as up to 30 PostDocs and experiencedph.d.studentsinthisemergingfield.besidesinvitedlecturesandposterpresentationsincludingaposter advertisement,alsoaroundtablediscussionisplannedtoevaluatethefuturepotentialofthefield.itisbelievedthat thevicinityofthestyrian Erzberg (IronOreMountainthathasbeenminedforages)willinspirelivelyandfruitful discussionsduringthefourdaysintheaustrianalps.
