You may also need Appendix 6. However, you will not access to Appendix 6 for Exam 2. Remember: Max Time is given as a guideline. If you use Max Time for every question on the Exam 2, you will not finish the Exam. General Information Notes-30-Lewis Structures of Atoms (You will have to download it/you don t have a class version of it) Part 1 State the number of valence electrons for each atom, and write the Lewis Dot Structure. 3 Part 2 Write the for each element In the, circle the orbitals that are in the valence shell. State the number of valence electrons, and write the Lewis Dot Structure for the atom. If you are still having problems, use Appendix 6 (Aufbau Principle) until you no longer need to. If you do not know how to use Appendix 6 to write the, you are behind and should ask questions on the day before the Exam or during Office Hours. The third energy level is the highest one filled. Therefore, I look for any orbital where the first number is three. There are two electrons in the 3s orbital. There is one electron in the 3p orbital. 6 Solutions If you cannot solve these problems, I highly suggest you go back and work from your notes before trying to work backwards from the answer key. Explanation 1) carbon 4 All elements in Group 4A (also known as Group IVA or Group 4) have 4 valence electrons. Explanation 2) bromine 7 All elements in Group 7A (also known as Group VIIA, Group 17, and Halogens) have 7 valence electrons. Explanation 3) gallium 3 All elements in Group 3A (also known as Group IIIA or Group 3) have 3 valence electrons. Explanation 4) potassium 1 All elements in Group 1A (also known as Group IA, Group 1, or Alkali Metals) have 1 valence electron. Explanation 5) xenon 8 All elements in Group 8A (also known as Group VIIIA, Group 18, or Nobel Gases) have 8 valence electrons. Page 6 of 9
