2 Name, phone number and address of home institution Radiation Safety Officer: Lain, 't L4o lq3 Licensing. Please have your home institution's Radiation Safety Officer contact Gary Lain regarding radioactive materials licensing requirements for your cruise. Licensing must be approved for cruise to proceed. Usage Location. Please provide the research vessel name, cruise dates, ports, and cruise area: New Horizon 5-22,2013 n Diego-San Diego ruise area: NP-9 lsotope lnformation. Please provide the following information for the isotope use you are requesting: list each isotope, its activity in millicuries and physicalform (liquid, solid, gas, sealed source [ECD, et. alj) and chemical form (e.9.: sodium bicarbonate). Radiation/X-ray machine users should list make, model and serial number, whether they are operating an open beam X-ray non-remotely. For all sealed sources fonrvard your most recent leak test certification to Gary Lain. 14C12 mci liquid Sodium Bicarbonate solution
3 Protocols. Send a copy of your radioisotope use protocols to Gary Lain. Protocols should specify activity amount used per manipulation. Use and Storage. Describe locations for isotope use and storage in the isotope van, including fume hoods, refri g era tion s/f reezers. List and describe any equipment used in conjunction with your work, including liquid scintillation counters. Request LSC for sample analysis. List any radiation monitoring equipment you will be using, including manufacturer, model and calibration date. iation work will be performed in the Ca COFl radiation van, it is specially equipped for radiation work with a spill ltainment basin, sealed floor, double ventilation, waste containment basin with re-seal;lble 20 liter waste jugs. Stock ution is secured in a refrigerator with a door that is pinned closed. The interior surfaces and floor of the van is acid cleaned. An sturdy poly carbonate sample bottle is used in conjunction with a secured, fiberglass incubation rack adjacent to the n to perform in vitro incubation on deck with plumbed seawater. A Ludlum pancake style Geiger counter (S/N ibrated thru 3/31/2014) is standard to monitor in the event of a spill. Radiation Safety. Describe arrangements for isolation and control of radioisotope, including controlled area boundaries and use of personal protective equipment. Explain weekly radiation contamination surveys and spill clean up procedures. Explain dosimetry requirements, if any. Give an estimate of total activity released, if any. radiation van is off limits to all but essential personnel. Laboratory coats and safety glass are mandated for isotope work. rate foot ware or special booties are reguired on the larger research vessels. lsotope is contained in plastic ware to prevent kage, all aliquoting and filtrations are performed within a designated containment basin which is acid cleaned at the end of day converting the 14 bicarbonate to carbon dioxide gas. Wipe tests are done weekly and at the end of the cruise of the iation van and submitted with post cruise usage report. Spill clean up drills have been performed using cold bicarbonate (non-radioactive) on New Horizon and NOAA ships to demonstrate the ease of using 100/o hydrochloric acid for clean up nd Geiger counter to monitor efforts. 5 Experience. Describe previous experience using radioactive materials on research vessels. lnclude isotopes used, activity levels, and other experience such as shipment of radioactive materials, spill clean up an use/ trouble shooting liquid scintillation counters. mes Wilkinson and David Wolgast, Jennifer Rodgers-Wolgast have been using radioaciive isotopes of various sorts on UC for 10 years or more each with no assaygble contamination issues. lnclude in our experience shipping and transporting pe to the UC vessels without incident. All participa nts have performed said work on cruises prior to this cruise successfully. Certification statement. It is understood that all users have proper training in handling isotopes and either have experience with isotopic work at sea or will be under the direct supervision of an experienced user. All precautions for handling and disposal of radioactive wastes shall be followed. lt is further understood that all isotope work will be confined to an isotope van and that unreported transfer of isotope onto the research vessel itself may result in revocation of user's isotope privileges on SIO vessels. The user is assumed by the signature below to accept responsibility for cleanup of any radioisotope spills on board the vessel, and for the safe and legal use and transport of isotope.
