Viking Press, (available online at Amazon and other sites; not available at UNC Student Store) Nuclides and Isotopes with Chart of the Nuclides, 17 th Edition, Bechtel Marine Propulsion Corp., (available online at order is directed through Amazon) Chem 73: Course Pack of Notes Available for purchase on Mon, Aug 17 at UNC Student Store. One to two more books will be assigned for library check out as the semester progresses. Additional materials online and from the libraries will be used for preparation of the special topic presentation (in November). Course Objectives: Nuclear chemistry is a broad field which we all are affected by almost daily in some way, shape or form. In this course we ll explore many aspects of nuclear chemistry in an attempt to better understand the historical development, the present technology and the future of the field. A general chemistry background in atomic history and theory will first be provided, followed by a survey of the applications and research topics of nuclear chemistry today. Attendance and Participation: As with any seminar class, attendance and participation in the discussions is a large portion of the final grade. You should prepare for each seminar meeting by reading the appropriate materials, viewing the assigned online videos/websites, and thinking about the topic. Then, you ll be prepared to show up for the seminar ready to ask questions and discuss the topics of interest. Please be on time for all class meetings. Grading in the Class: Final grades for this seminar will be based on the overall scores calculated from in-class discussions, nuclear chemistry in the news presentations, written assignments/book reviews, and a final project/presentation. In-Class Discussion/Participation/Attendance 10% Mini-Presentations of Selected Topics 10% Take-Home Mid-term and Thanksgiving Exams 30% Written Assignment/Scientist Report 20% Final Project/Presentation 30% Graded Task Descriptions 1) In-Class Discussion based on attendance and useful contributions to class discussions. 2) Topic Mini-Presentations brief (10-15 min) Power Point presentations scheduled throughout the semester. Procedural details and specifics provided at time of assignment. These small presentations will provide practice and feedback to help each student prepare for the larger final projects. 2 3) Take-Home Mid-term Exam A few days before fall break you'll be given an exam to be completed on your own time covering the material up through that point of the semester. Due first class after fall break. 4) Written Assignment/Scientist Report each student will be assigned to read an approved book of interest covering a person significant in the history and development nuclear physics or chemistry. The required report format will be given at the time of the assignment. Due Nov. 5. 5) Final Project/Presentation In groups of 2 or 3, students will give each of the last 8 lectures on topics to be determined. The required duration of these lectures will be min (TBA) and will be designed to teach the class something not yet covered in detail. Every member of the class will participate in the final evaluation of the presentations. Student rankings will provide a large input into the final grades for these class presentations..in previous classes, these have been a lot of fun and a great experience according to the students.
