3 Part One: General Marking Principles f hemistry igher (Revised) This infmation is provided to help you understand the general principles you must apply when marking candidate responses to questions in this Paper. These principles must be read in conjunction with the specific Marking Instructions f each question. (a) (b) Marks f each candidate response must always be assigned in line with these general marking principles and the specific Marking Instructions f the relevant question. Marking should always be positive ie, marks should be awarded f what is crect and not deducted f errs omissions. GENERAL MARKING ADVIE: hemistry igher (Revised) The marking schemes are written to assist in determining the minimal acceptable answer rather than listing every possible crect and increct answer. The following notes are offered to suppt Markers in making judgements on candidates evidence, and apply to marking both end of unit assessments and course assessments. General infmation f markers The general comments given below should be considered during all marking.. There are no half marks awarded. 2. Marks should not be deducted f increct spelling loose language as long as the meaning of the wd(s) is conveyed. Example: Answers like 'distilling' (f 'distillation') and 'it gets hotter' (f 'the temperature rises') should be accepted. 3. A right answer followed by a wrong answer should be treated as a cancelling err and no marks should be given. Example: What colour is seen when blue Fehling s solution is warmed with an aldehyde? The answer 'red, green' gains no marks. 4. If a right answer is followed by additional infmation which does not conflict, the additional infmation should be igned, whether crect not. Example: Why can the tube not be made of copper? If the crect answer is related to a low melting point, 'opper has a low melting point and is coloured grey' would not be treated as having a cancelling err. 5. Full marks are usually awarded f the crect answer to a calculation on its own; the part marks shown in the marking scheme are f use when wking is given. An exception is when candidates are asked to 'Find, by calculation, '. Page 2

4 6. A mark should be deducted f increct missing units only when stated in the marking scheme. No marks should be deducted f increct missing units at intermediate stages in a calculation. 7. As a general rule, where a wrong numerical answer (already penalised) is carried fward to another step, no further penalty is incurred provided the result is used crectly. The exception to this rule is where the marking instructions f a numerical question assign separate concept marks and an arithmetic mark. In such situations, the marking instructions will give clear guidance on the assignment of partial marks. 8. Igne the omission of one atom from a full structural fmula provided the bond is shown. 9. A symbol crect fmula should be accepted in place of a name unless stated otherwise in the marking scheme. 0. When fmulae of ionic compounds are given as answers it will only be necessary to show ion charges if these have been specifically asked f. owever, if ion charges are shown, they must be crect. If increct charges are shown, no marks should be awarded. Page 3

5 . If an answer comes directly from the text of the question, no marks should be given. Example: A student found that 0 05 mol of propane, 3 8 burned to give 82 4 kj of energy. 3 8 (g) (g) 3O 2 (g) O(l) Name the kind of enthalpy change which the student measured. No marks should be given f 'burning' since the wd 'burned' appears in the text. 2. A guiding principle in marking is to give credit f crect chemistry rather than to look f reasons not to give marks. Example : The structure of a hydrocarbon found in petrol is shown below Name the hydrocarbon. Although the punctuation is not crect, '3, methyl-hexane' should gain the full mark. Example 2: A student measured the p of four carboxylic acids to find out how their strength is related to the number of chline atoms in the molecule. The results are shown. ow is the strength of the acids related to the number of chline atoms in the molecule? Although not completely crect, an answer such as 'the me l 2, the stronger the acid' should gain the full mark. 3. Unless the question is clearly about a non-chemistry issue, eg costs in industrial chemistry, a non-chemical answer gains no marks. Example: Why does the (catalytic) converter have a honeycomb structure? A response such as 'to make it wk' may be crect but it is not a chemical answer and the mark should not be given. Page 4

58 Part One: General Marking Principles f hemistry igher (Revised) This infmation is provided to help you understand the general principles you must apply when marking candidate responses to questions in this Paper. These principles must be read in conjunction with the specific Marking Instructions f each question. (a) (b) Marks f each candidate response must always be assigned in line with these general marking principles and the specific Marking Instructions f the relevant question. Marking should always be positive ie, marks should be awarded f what is crect and not deducted f errs omissions. GENERAL MARKING ADVIE: hemistry igher (Revised) The marking schemes are written to assist in determining the minimal acceptable answer rather than listing every possible crect and increct answer. The following notes are offered to suppt Markers in making judgements on candidates evidence, and apply to marking both end of unit assessments and course assessments. General infmation f markers The general comments given below should be considered during all marking.. There are no half marks awarded. 2. Marks should not be deducted f increct spelling loose language as long as the meaning of the wd(s) is conveyed. Example: Answers like 'distilling' (f 'distillation') and 'it gets hotter' (f 'the temperature rises') should be accepted. 3. A right answer followed by a wrong answer should be treated as a cancelling err and no marks should be given. Example: What colour is seen when blue Fehling s solution is warmed with an aldehyde? The answer 'red, green' gains no marks. 4. If a right answer is followed by additional infmation which does not conflict, the additional infmation should be igned, whether crect not. Example: Why can the tube not be made of copper? If the crect answer is related to a low melting point, 'opper has a low melting point and is coloured grey' would not be treated as having a cancelling err. 5. Full marks are usually awarded f the crect answer to a calculation on its own; the part marks shown in the marking scheme are f use when wking is given. An exception is when candidates are asked to 'Find, by calculation, '. Page 2

59 6. A mark should be deducted f increct missing units only when stated in the marking scheme. No marks should be deducted f increct missing units at intermediate stages in a calculation. 7. As a general rule, where a wrong numerical answer (already penalised) is carried fward to another step, no further penalty is incurred provided the result is used crectly. The exception to this rule is where the marking instructions f a numerical question assign separate concept marks and an arithmetic mark. In such situations, the marking instructions will give clear guidance on the assignment of partial marks. 8. Igne the omission of one atom from a full structural fmula provided the bond is shown. 9. A symbol crect fmula should be accepted in place of a name unless stated otherwise in the marking scheme. 0. When fmulae of ionic compounds are given as answers it will only be necessary to show ion charges if these have been specifically asked f. owever, if ion charges are shown, they must be crect. If increct charges are shown, no marks should be awarded. Page 3

Example 2: A student measured the p of four carboxylic acids to find out how their strength is related to the number of chline atoms in the molecule. Although not completely crect, an answer such as 'the me l 2, the stronger the acid' should gain the full mark. 3.
