4 Plants Plants There are many kinds of plants. These plants are different in size, shape, and color. trees flowers vines 1998 Evan-Moor Corp. 4 Giant Science Resource Book EMC 398

5 Roots Plants Roots hold a plant in place. Roots take needed water and minerals from the soil and carry them up to the rest of the plant. Some plants store food in their roots. turnip radish dandelion carrot geranium grass 1998 Evan-Moor Corp. 5 Giant Science Resource Book EMC 398

6 Plants Stems Stems hold up the leaves and flowers of a plant. Stems have little tubes to take water and food to the rest of the plant. Grass, flowers, and vines have soft stems. A tree has one hard, woody stem called a trunk. Pretend this straw is a stem. Put it in a glass of water. Suck the water up into your mouth. This celery is a stem. Put it in a glass of colored water. They have a midrib and veins that spread over the leaf. vein midrib blade Compound leaves are made up of many leaflets. Veins run from the midrib to the edge of the leaf. leaflets vein midrib Needles are narrow leaves with parallel veins and a hard or leathery surface. needles 1998 Evan-Moor Corp. 8 Giant Science Resource Book EMC 398
