1 Cryopreservation of Ornamental Plants Adela Halmagyi Institute of Biological Research, branch of NIRDBS, Republicii str. 48, Cluj-Napoca, Romania
2 Cryopreservation benefits for ornamental plants long-term conservation of vegetatively propagated species; recalcitrant seeds or no viable seeds are formed; endangered, rare or endemic wild species for ecological reasons; wild species as a source of special traits; old cultivars and land races or breeding lines; loss of plants by diseases and climatic stress; eliminate somaclonal variation; provides long-term genetic stability; 2
3 Plant material Selection of species and cultivars of interest roses (Rosa x hybrida L.) carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus L.) ornamental citrus species Explants type (shoot apices, axillary nodes, seeds); age of plants (duration in culture); dimension of explants; 3

12 Concluding remarks the most important goal of the cryostorage is the recovery of true-to-type plants; appropriate choice of technique depends on the type of plant material, existing facilities, etc.; the quality of explants is essential to ensure homogeneity of plant material; take effective measures too prevent dehydration and osmotic shock during excision of shoot tips; development of the best rewarming techniques and growth media is essential for the success of any protocol; protocol optimization is crucial for success. 12
