After studying this unit students will be able to understand the role of chemistry in different spheres of life and the characteristics of three states of matter. 2. Students will be able to classify different substances into elements, mixtures and compounds. 3. Define SI base units and list some commonly used prefixes. 4. Use of scientific notations and will be able to differentiate between precision and accuracy along with significant figures and their conversions. 5. Students will be able to understand various laws of chemical combinations and terms like atomic mass, average atomic mass, molecular mass, mole and molar masses. 6. Students will be able to calculate mass percent, empirical formulae and other stoichiometric calculations like molarity, molality, normality etc NCERT Text book, Extra marks, Reference books ( Reference Book Companion chemistry, Pradeep s Chemistry) - EXPERIMENT: PREPRATION OF SOLUTION OF GIVEN MOLARITY AND NORMALITY IN LAB IN PRACTICAL PERIODS. (Students will be performing experiments in PRACTICAL PERIOD IN LAB. - Introduction of the chapter through various recall topics and importance of chemistry in different spheres of life.explanation and written work related to the sub topics: Properties of matter and their measurement. The international system of units along with their different prefixes and conversions - Properties of matter and their measurement.. Introduction of the concept of

Introduction of scientific notations and its application in performing different mathematical operations -The international system of units along with their different prefixes and conversions -. Introduction of the concept of mass, weight, volume, density, temperature, Uncertainty in measurement. Introduction of scientific notations and its application in performing different mathematical operations - Introduction of significant figures- These figures are meaningful digits which are known with certainty. Concept of Precision and accuracy. Mathematical Operations of Significant Figures. - Introduction of significant figures- These figures are meaningful digits which are known with certainty. Practice with Various numerical Introduction Laws of Chemical Combinations. Law of Conservation of mass- It states that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. This Law will be explained by solving various numerical based on it. - Law of Definite Proportion which states that a given compound always contains exactly the same proportion of elements by weight Law of Multiple Proportion which states that if two elements can combine to form more than one compound the mass of one element that combines with fixed mass of the other element are in the ratio of small whole numbers. Numericals will be done based on this law in the class. Gay Lussac s Law of Gaseous Volumes Avogadro s law, Dalton s Atomic Theory will be discussed at length and numerical based on these concepts will be done - Atomic Mass, Molecular Mass, Formula Unit Mass,Mole Concept and Molar Masses, Calculation of Percentage Composition were discussed - Empirical Formula and Molecular Formula based on these concepts to be solved -Discussions on the role of Limiting Reagents, mass percent, molarity, molality and mole fraction will be held. Concept will be cleared through solving numericals - Revision of the chapter will be done USING Extra marks.
