Analysis, Vol. 1, 2007, no. 16, Hilbert-Schmidt Weighted omposition Operator on the Fock space Sei-ichiro Ueki 1 Department of Mathematics Faculty of Science Division II Tokyo University of Science, Japan Abstract. In this paper we consider the weighted composition operator u ϕ on the Fock space. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on u and ϕ which will ensure that the weighted composition operator belongs to the Hilbert-Schmidt class. As a consequence of our main result, we completely determine the Hilbert-Schmidt compositon operator on the Fock space. Mathematics Subject lassification: Primary 47B33, 47B38; Secondary 30D15 Keywords: Hilbert-shcmidt operator, weighted composition operator, Fock space, entire function 1. Introduction Throughout this paper, let dm denote the usual Lebesgue measure on. For >0, the Fock space F 2 is the space of all entire functions f on for which f 2 F = f(z) 2 e 2 z 2 dm(z) <. F 2 is a Hilbert space with an inner product f,g F 2 = f(z)g(z)e z 2 dm(z). n Let e n (z) = n! zn for a positive integer n. Then the set {e n } forms an orthonormal basis for F. 2 Since each point evaluation is a bounded linear functional on F, 2 thus for z there exists a unique function K z F 2 such that f(z) = f,k z F 2 for f F. 2 That is K z is the reproducing kernel 1 Postal address: , Miyashiro huo, Minamisaitama, Saitama Japan ueki@ms.kuki.tus.ac.jp sueki@camel.plala.or.jp
770 Sei-ichiro Ueki function for F 2. Using the orthonormal basis {e n } for F 2, we can compute the explicit formula for K z : K z (w) = exp{ w, z }, w, (see [6]). Here the notation, denotes the usual inner product on. Note that K z F 2 = exp( 2 z 2 ). We also use the normalized kernel function k z (w) = exp{ w, z 2 z 2 }. The problems for the Fock space, such as an interpolation sequence or a sampling set, have been studied by many authors. See, for example, [7, 9]. Moreover, sevral studies have been made on concrete operators, such as Toeplitz operators and Hankel operators. Some results on Toeplitz operators have been found by Grudsky, Vasilevski, Sangadji and Stroethoff ([4, 8, 10]). In [1, 5, 6, 10], these authors have dealt with Hankel operators and Hankel forms. In this paper, our object is a weighted composition operator on F 2. Let u and ϕ be entire functions. The weighted composition operator u ϕ is defined by u ϕ f = u (f ϕ) for an entire function f. Recently, the author have given a necessary and sufficient condition for the boundedness or compactness of the operator u ϕ ([11]). The normalized kernel function k z played an important role in our characterization. To give a necessary and sufficient condition for u ϕ belongs to the Hilbert-Schmidt class, we will also use the function k z. The following theorem is our main result. Theorem 1. Suppose that ϕ and u are entire functions on such that u ϕ is bounded on F. 2 Then the following conditions are equivalent: (a) u ϕ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, (b) u(z) 2 exp { ϕ(z) 2 z 2 }dm(z) <, ( ) (c) u(w) 2 exp ϕ(w),z 2 e { z 2 w 2} dm(w) dm(z) <. 2. Proofs of main theorem In order to prove our result, we give a trace formula for positive operators on F 2. In the case that the usual Bergman space defined on classical domains of, this type formula is well-known. See, for example, Proposition in [12]. Lemma 1. If T is a positive or trace class operator on F, 2 then the trace tr(t ) of T is given by tr(t )= Tk z,k z F 2 dm(z).
Hilbert-Schmidt weighted composition operator 771 Proof. Fix an orthonormal set {ϕ j } for F. 2 Then we have tr(t )= Tϕ j,ϕ j F 2 = Tϕ j (z)ϕ j (z)e z 2 dm(z) j=0 j=0 = Tϕ j,k z F 2 ϕ j (z)e z 2 dm(z) j=0 = T ϕ j (z)ϕ j,k z F 2 e z 2 dm(z) j=0 = TK z,k z F 2 e z 2 dm(z) = Tk z,k z F 2 dm(z). Thus the lemma was proved. Proofs of Theorem 1. First we show that (a) is equivalent to (b). Since the set {e n } is an orthonormal set for F 2, we have u ϕ e n 2 F = u(z) 2 n 2 n! ϕ(z) 2n e z 2 dm(z) n=0 n=0 = u(z) 2 n e z 2 n! ϕ(z) 2n dm(z) n=0 = u(z) 2 e z 2 e ϕ(z) 2 dm(z) = u(z) 2 exp { ϕ(z) 2 z 2 }dm(z). Thus u ϕ is Hilbert-Schmidt if and only if u(z) 2 exp { ϕ(z) 2 z 2 }dm(z) <, and so we see that (a) and (b) are equivalent. Next we prove that (a) and (c) are equivalent. According to a general theory of operators on the Hilbert space, we see that u ϕ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator if and only if (u ϕ ) u ϕ is a trace class operator. Since (u ϕ ) u ϕ is a positive operator on F 2, then Lemma 1 implies that u ϕ is Hilbert-Schmidt if and only if (1) (u ϕ ) u ϕ k z,k z F 2 dm(z) <. On the other hand, we obtain that for each z (u ϕ ) u ϕ k z,k z F 2 = u ϕ k z,u ϕ k z F 2 = u(w) 2 exp ϕ(w),z 2 e { z 2 w 2} dm(w).
772 Sei-ichiro Ueki ombining this with (1), we can conclude that u ϕ belongs to the Hilbert- Schmidt class if and only if ( ) u(w) 2 exp ϕ(w),z 2 e { z 2 w 2} dm(w) dm(z) <. This completes the proof. 3. Applications In this section, we concern two spacial cases of the operator u ϕ on F 2. First we consider the case that u is the constant function 1, that is the composition operator ϕ. Many mathematicians have studied about composition operators on various analytic function spaces. Recently arswell, Macluer and Schuster [3] completely determined the bounded or compact composition operator on F 2 as follows: Proposition 1 (arswell, Macluer and Schuster [3]). Suppose that ϕ is an entire function. (a) If ϕ is bounded on F 2, then ϕ(z) =az + b, where a 1, and if a =1, then b =0. (b) If ϕ is compact on F 2, then ϕ(z) =az + b, where a < 1. onversely, suppose that ϕ(z) = az + b. (c) If a =1and b =0, then ϕ is bounded on F 2. (d) If a < 1, then ϕ is compact on F 2. As an easy corollary of Theorem 1 and Proposition 1 we get the following result. orollary 1. Suppose that ϕ(z) =az + b with a 1 and b. Then the following conditions are equivalent: (a) ϕ is a compact operator, (b) ϕ is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, (c) a < 1. Proof. (b) (a) is obvious. Proposition 1 have shown that (a) implies (c). So we only prove that (c) implies (b). Let a <β<1 and R = b.forz β a with z >R, we have β z > az + b = ϕ(z), and so exp { ϕ(z) 2 z 2 }dm(z) exp {(β 2 1) z 2 }dm(z) <. z >R z >R On the other hand, we see that exp { ϕ(z) 2 z 2 }dm(z) z R ( max ) exp ϕ(z) 2 exp { z 2 }dm(z) <. z R z R
Hilbert-Schmidt weighted composition operator 773 These inequalities and Theorem 1 show that ϕ belongs to the Hilbert-Schmidt class. This completes the proof. Next we consider the case ϕ(z) =z. In this case, the operator u ϕ is called the multiplication operator and denoted by M u. Let L 2 (,dμ) denote the Lebesgue space with respect to the measure dμ(z) = exp{ z 2 }dm(z). Then the Fock space F 2 is a closed subspace of L 2 (,dμ). For each u L (), the multiplication operator M u : F 2 L 2 (,dμ) is defined by M u f = uf for f F. 2 This operator is closely related to the Toeplitz and Hankel operators on F 2. For these studies, refer to [1, 2, 5, 10]. For g L () the Berezin symbol g of g is defined by g(w) = g(z) exp{ w z 2 }dm(z), w. The Berezin symbol is used for analyzing the properties of these operators. For instance, K. Stroethoff characterized the compactness of M u in terms of the Berezin symbol u 2 as follows: The following state- Proposition 2 (K. Stroethoff [10]). Let u L (). ments are equivalent: (a) M u is compact, (b) u 2 (w) 0 as w. As another application of Lemma 1 we get a necessary and sufficient condition for M u : F 2 L 2 (,dμ) is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator. orollary 2. Let u L (). The following statements are equivalent: (a) M u is a Hilbert-Schmidt operator, (b) u 2 L 1 (). Proof. For w we have u 2 (w) = u(z) 2 exp (2Re z, w ) exp { z 2 w 2 }dm(z) = (2) u(z) 2 k w (z) 2 e z 2 dm(z) = M u 2k w,k w F 2. This implies that u 2 belongs to L 1 () if and only if M u 2k w,k w F 2 dm(w) <. The above equation (2) implies that the Berezin symbol u 2 is the integrand which appear in the trace formula for M u 2. Since M u 2 = M u M u on F 2 and
774 Sei-ichiro Ueki these are positive operators, thus Lemma 1 shows that M u is in the Hilbert-Schmidt class M u M u is in the trace class which was to be proved. References u 2 L 1 (), [1] W.
