Composition operators Definition 1 For f H, define the multiplication operator M f on H 2 by M f h = fh, h H 2. 2 For an analytic self-map ϕ of D and f H, the operator W f,ϕ := M f C ϕ is said to be a weighted composition operator on H 2.

Composition operators Goal To characterize composition operators C ϕ in A and adjoints C ϕ in A!
Definition Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D. We say that a D is a fixed point of ϕ if lim r 1 ϕ(ra) = a. We write ϕ (a) = lim r 1 ϕ (ra). In the above definition, the limit lim r 1 ϕ (ra) exists if a < 1. Moreover, if a = 1, then this limit exists and 0 < ϕ (a) by Julia-Carathéodory-Wolff.
An automorphism ϕ of D is called elliptic if it has two fixed points such that one is inside D and another is outside D. Theorem (Denjoy-Wolff Theorem) If ϕ is an analytic self-map of D, not an elliptic automorphism, then there exists a point a of D so that the iterates {ϕ n } of ϕ converges uniformly to a on compact subsets of D. In addition, a is the unique fixed point of ϕ in D for which ϕ (a) 1.
Definition The unique fixed point a in Denjoy-Wolff Theorem is called the Denjoy-Wolff point of ϕ.
For an analytic self-map ϕ of D, one of the following statements holds: 1 ϕ is an elliptic automorphism;
For an analytic self-map ϕ of D, one of the following statements holds: 1 ϕ is an elliptic automorphism; 2 ϕ has Denjoy-Wolff point a D;
For an analytic self-map ϕ of D, one of the following statements holds: 1 ϕ is an elliptic automorphism; 2 ϕ has Denjoy-Wolff point a D; 3 ϕ has Denjoy-Wolff point a D with 0 < ϕ (a) < 1;
For an analytic self-map ϕ of D, one of the following statements holds: 1 ϕ is an elliptic automorphism; 2 ϕ has Denjoy-Wolff point a D; 3 ϕ has Denjoy-Wolff point a D with 0 < ϕ (a) < 1; 4 ϕ has Denjoy-Wolff point a D with ϕ (a) = 1.
General symbols Lemma (Cowen-Kriete) Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D with Denjoy-Wolff point a. If 0 < a < 1 or if a = 1 and ϕ (a) = 1, then C ϕ is not normaloid.
General symbols Theorem Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D. If C ϕ A, then the following statements hold:
General symbols Theorem Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D. If C ϕ A, then the following statements hold: 1 0 is a fixed point of ϕ.
General symbols Theorem Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D. If C ϕ A, then the following statements hold: 1 0 is a fixed point of ϕ. 2 ϕ(z) z for all z D and ϕ (0) 1.
General symbols Theorem Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D. If C ϕ A, then the following statements hold: 1 0 is a fixed point of ϕ. 2 ϕ(z) z for all z D and ϕ (0) 1. 3 If ϕ(z 0 ) = z 0 for some z 0 D \ {0} or ϕ (0) = 1, then C ϕ is unitary.
General symbols Example If ϕ(z) = sz + t with s, t 0 and s + t 1, then C ϕ A.
General symbols For a subset of C, let iso( ) denote the set of all isolated points in and let = {λ : λ }. Theorem Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D. If C ϕ A, then and iso(σ(c ϕ )) σ p (C ϕ ) {(ϕ (0)) n : n = 0, 1, 2, } σ(c ϕ ), σ p (C ϕ ) {(ϕ (0)) n : n = 0, 1, 2, } σ p (C ϕ).
General symbols Example If ϕ(z) = z 2 z, then C ϕ A and σ p (C ϕ ) {(ϕ (0)) n : n = 0, 1, 2, }.
General symbols We say that T L(H) is binormal if T T commutes with TT. Theorem Let ϕ is an analytic self-map of D. Assume that C ϕc ϕ is a diagonal matrix with respect to the basis {z n } n=0. If 1 ϕ is a polynomial function, or 2 C ϕ is binormal and ϕ (0) 0, then C ϕ A C ϕ is subnormal.
General symbols Example Let ϕ(z) = cz k where k > 1 is an integer and c 1. Then C ϕc ϕ is diagonal with respect to the basis {z n } n=0. Therefore, C ϕ A if and only if C ϕ is subnormal. Indeed, C ϕ A c = 1.
Linear fractional symbols Let ϕ be a linear fractional self-map of D, namely ϕ(z) = az+b cz+d with ad bc 0. If C ϕ A, then b = 0. Thus ϕ(z) = z uz+v where u = c a and v = d a. Theorem z Let ϕ(z) = uz+v for some u, v C with u 0 and v 1 + u. Then the following statements are equivalent.
1 C ϕ is subnormal.
1 C ϕ is subnormal. 2 C ϕ belongs to class A.
1 C ϕ is subnormal. 2 C ϕ belongs to class A. 3 C ϕ is binormal.
1 C ϕ is subnormal. 2 C ϕ belongs to class A. 3 C ϕ is binormal. 4 v > 1 and u = v 1.
Linear fractional symbols Corollary If ϕ is an automorphism of D (i.e., C ϕ is invertible), then C ϕ A C ϕ is unitary.
Linear fractional symbols Corollary Let ϕ be a linear fractional self-map of D such that C ϕc ϕ has a diagonal matrix with respect to the standard basis {z n } n=0. Then C ϕ A C ϕ is normal.
The adjoints C ϕ Theorem Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D with Denjoy-Wolff point a. If C ϕ A, then either a = 1 and 0 < ϕ (a) < 1 or else C ϕ is normal.
The adjoints C ϕ Example z If ϕ(z) = uz+v thus Cϕ A. with u 0 and v 1 + u, then ϕ(0) = 0 and
The adjoints C ϕ Example z uz+v If ϕ(z) = thus Cϕ A. with u 0 and v 1 + u, then ϕ(0) = 0 and Example If ϕ(z) = (2 t)z+t tz+(2+t) for some complex number t with Re(t) 0, then ϕ(1) = 1 and ϕ (1) = 1. Hence C ϕ A.
The adjoints C ϕ Corollary Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D. Then C ϕ, C ϕ A C ϕ is normal.
The adjoints C ϕ Theorem Let ϕ be a nonconstant analytic self-map of D. If C ϕ A is injective, then ϕ is univalent.
The adjoints C ϕ Theorem Let ϕ(z) = sz + t where s 0 and s + t 1. Then C ϕ A C ϕ is subnormal.
The adjoints C ϕ Theorem For 0 < s < 1 and r 1, let ϕ(z) = (r+s)z+(1 s) r(1 s)z+(1+rs) be a linear fractional self-map of D with Denjoy-Wolff point 1 and 0 < ϕ (1) = s < 1. If Cϕ A, then r
The adjoints C ϕ For 0 < s < 1 and 1 r 1, let ϕ(z) = (r+s)z+(1 s) r(1 s)z+(1+rs) is a linear fractional self-map of D with Denjoy-Wolff point 1 and 0 < ϕ (1) = s < 1. 1 C ϕ A = 1 3 r 1. 2 C ϕ is hyponormal = 2 5 r 1 by Dennis. 3 C ϕ is subnormal 0 r 1 by Cowen. We expect that there maybe exist 1 r [ 1 3, 2 5) such that C ϕ is a non-hyponormal operator in A. 2 r [2 5, 0) such that C ϕ is hyponormal but not subnormal.
The commutants For an operator T L(H), define the commutant {T } of T as to be the collection of all operators in L(H) commuting with T. Proposition Let ϕ be an analytic self-map of D such that C ϕ is a non-normal operator in A. For f H, M f {C ϕ } f is constant on D.
The commutants Theorem Suppose that ϕ is an analytic self-map of D such that C ϕ A. If ψ is an analytic self-map of D such that C ψ {C ϕ }, then zh 2 is a nontrivial invariant subspace for C ψ.
The commutants Theorem Suppose that ϕ is an analytic self-map of D such that C ϕ A. If ψ is an analytic self-map of D such that p(c ψ ) {C ϕ } for some polynomial p of degree 2, then at least one of the following statements holds:
The commutants Theorem Suppose that ϕ is an analytic self-map of D such that C ϕ A. If ψ is an analytic self-map of D such that p(c ψ ) {C ϕ } for some polynomial p of degree 2, then at least one of the following statements holds: 1 zh 2 is a nontrivial invariant subspace for C ψ or C 2 ψ ;
The commutants Theorem Suppose that ϕ is an analytic self-map of D such that C ϕ A. If ψ is an analytic self-map of D such that p(c ψ ) {C ϕ } for some polynomial p of degree 2, then at least one of the following statements holds: 1 zh 2 is a nontrivial invariant subspace for C ψ or C 2 ψ ; 2 {f H 2 : f (ψ(0)) = 0} = {K ψ(0) } is a nontrivial invariant subspace for C ψ ;
The commutants Theorem Suppose that ϕ is an analytic self-map of D such that C ϕ A. If ψ is an analytic self-map of D such that p(c ψ ) {C ϕ } for some polynomial p of degree 2, then at least one of the following statements holds: 1 zh 2 is a nontrivial invariant subspace for C ψ or C 2 ψ ; 2 {f H 2 : f (ψ(0)) = 0} = {K ψ(0) } is a nontrivial invariant subspace for C ψ ; 3 ϕ(ψ(0)) (ϕ ψ)(ψ(0)).
The commutants Remark Suppose that ϕ is an analytic self-map of D such that C ϕ A. Let ψ be an analytic self-map of D such that p(c ψ ) {C ϕ } for some polynomial p of degree 2. If ϕ = ϕ ψ, i.e., C ψ has ϕ as an eigenfunction corresponding to the eigenvalue 1, then C ψ or Cψ 2 has a nontrivial invariant subspace.
