1 Inclusive J/ψ and ψ(s) production in and p-pb collisions at forward rapidit with ALICE at the LHC arxiv:49.877v [nucl-ex] 9 Sep 4 Biswarup Paul (for the ALICE Collaboration) Saha Institute of Nuclear Phsics, Kolkata - 764, India he ALICE collaboration has studied inclusive J/ψ and ψ(s) production at forward rapidities in collisions at s = 7 ev with the ALICE Muon Spectrometer. he analsis has been carried out on a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosit L int =.35 pb. he production cross-sections of J/ψ and ψ(s), integrated over the transverse momentum ( < p < GeV/c) and rapidit (.5 < < 4), have been measured. he J/ψ and ψ(s) differential cross-sections, in transverse momentum and rapidit, have also been measured, significantl extending the p reach of previous measurements performed in the same -range. he results have been compared with the previousl published ALICE results (L int = 5.6 nb ) and also with the measurement performed b the LHCb collaboration. he ψ(s)/j/ψ ratio, integrated over p and, has been measured. his ratio has also been evaluated as a function of transverse momentum and rapidit and compared with the LHCb measurement. Finall, recent results on cross-sections, ψ(s)/j/ψ production ratio, nuclear modification factor (R ) and forward-to-backward ield ratio (R FB ) in p-pb collisions at snn = 5. ev will be discussed.
2 Introduction Fourt ears have passed after the discover of charmonia (bound states of c and c quarks) but the understanding of their production in hadronic collisions still remains incomplete. Models based on Quantum Chromodnamics (QCD) provide a qualitative understanding of their production mechanism in collisions at high p but are not suitable for the description of the low-p region. he ALICE collaboration has measured the production of charmonia down to p =. ALICE results are thus useful for understanding the low-p production mechanisms. In addition, the results for the charmonium provide a baseline for the nuclear modification factor of charmonium production in p-pb and Pb-Pb collisions. he stud of charmonia in p-pb collisions can be used as a tool for a quantitative investigation of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects and various mechanisms such as nuclear parton shadowing, cc break-up via interaction with nucleons, initial/final state energ loss, relevant in the context of studies of the strong interaction. Strong shadowing and coherent energ loss effects are expected at the LHC. he Muon Spectrometer of ALICE [] is designed to measure the charmonium (J/ψ,ψ(S)) and bottomonium (Υ(S),Υ(S),Υ(3S)) states in the pseudo-rapidit interval 4 < η <.5.. Event and track selections he analsis described in this document (see [] for details) uses collision data at s = 7 ev. he data were recorded in with a trigger defined b the coincidence of a minimum bias trigger with the detection of two oosite sign muons reconstructed in the trigger chambers of the muon spectrometer. A total of 4 million events were analzed, corresponding to an integrated luminosit L int =.35 pb (with 5% sstematic uncertaint). In order to improve the purit of the muon tracks the following selection criteria were alied: () both muon tracks matched with trigger tracks above GeV/c p threshold, () both muon tracks in the pseudo-rapidit range 4 < η <.5, (3) transverse radius coordinate of the tracks at the end of the hadron absorber (the longitudinal position of the absorber from the interation point (IP) is 5. < z <.9 m) in the range 7.6 < R abs < 89.5 cm, (4) dimuon rapidit in the range.5 < < 4. (a positive rapidit value is chosen b convention) and (5) dimuon p in the range < p < GeV/c.. Signal extraction Fig. shows the dimuon invariant mass distribution fitted with two Extended Crstal Ball functions (Crstal Ball function with a non Gaussian tail on both sides) for both the J/ψ and the ψ(s) and a variable width Gaussian function (a Gaussian function with a width varing linearl with the mass) for the background.

Figure 5: R and R FB of J/ψ and ψ(s) compared with various models [8] [9] []. In Fig. 5(a), R ψ(s) is compared with R J/ψ. he ψ(s) suression is much stronger than that of J/ψ and reaches a factor with respect to. he results of theoretical models, based on shadowing and energ loss, do not depend on the final quantum numbers of the charmonium states, therefore the same behaviour for J/ψ and ψ(s)
7 is expected. Fig. 5(a) shows a reasonable agreement of J/ψ data with models based on EPS9 NLO shadowing calculations [8] and on models including coherent parton energ loss [9], but there is a clear disagreement with ψ(s) results. hese results show that other mechanisms must be invoked in order to describe the ψ(s) suression in proton-nucleus collisions. More details of p-pb analsis can be found in []. 3.3 Forward to backward ratio he forward to backward ratio R FB [] is defined in the common rapidit range.96 < < 3.53 and corresponds to rapidit range 3.43 < lab < 4. in p-pb and 3.7 < lab <.5 in Pb-p. his ratio does not depend on the interpolated cross-section at s = 5. ev and the nuclear overlap factor. Fig. 5(b) shows the R FB for J/ψ and ψ(s), compared with theoretical model calculations including shadowing and/or energ loss. All model calculations seem to be consistent with both J/ψ and ψ(s) results. 4 Conclusion In conclusion, ALICE has measured the inclusive production cross-section of J/ψ and ψ(s) at forward rapidit (.5 < < 4) in collisions at a center of mass energ s = 7 ev as a function of the quarkonium transverse momentum and rapidit. he results are in good agreement with measurements from the LHCb collaboration over similar p and ranges. We have also measured the inclusive ψ(s) production in protonnucleus collisions at the LHC. Measurements were performed with the ALICE Muon Spectrometer in the p-going (.3 < < 3.53) and Pb-going ( 4.46 < <.96) directions. he ψ(s)/j/ψ ratio, the double ratio [σ ψ(s) /σ J/ψ ] /[σ ψ(s) /σ J/ψ ], R and R FB for J/ψ and ψ(s), integrated over and p, were estimated. he results show that ψ(s) is significantl more suressed than J/ψ in both rapidit regions. his observation implies that initial state nuclear effects alone cannot account for the modification of the ψ(s) ields, as also confirmed b the poor agreement of the ψ(s) R with models based on shadowing and/or energ loss. Other final state effects such as cc interaction with the final state hadronic medium created in p-pb collisions should probabl be considered to explain such an unexpected behaviour. References [] K.
