Warmest congratulations on the 30th anniversary of the UNUGTP! Warmest congratulations on the achievements of the Icelandic handball team in Beijing Olympic Games!
A brief review of geological studies of geothermal systems in China PANG Zhonghe Institute of Geology and Geophysics,Chinese Academy of Sciences UNUGTP fellow 1988 Presented at the 30th Anniversary Workshop of the United Nations University Geothermal Training Programme, Reykjavik, Iceland, August 2008
Contents Geothermal background of the country Hydrothermal systems in China with four case studies Use of heat while reducing thermal hazards in deep coal mines Sequestration of CO2 in saline aquifers with benefits of enhanced geothermal reservoir injection
Geothermal background is significantly different in northern and southern China Based on measurements in around 1500 wells in China, this map was produced in the 1990s and has been updated eversince. It gives the general geothermal background of the country. Hu Shengbiao et al., 2000, EPSL
Hot springs are found in every region but more in the south Around 3200 sites are included in this map of geothermal systems. It shows the major geothermal resources in the country. According their formation mechanism, these systems are grouped into three types and four zones.
High temperature hydrothermal systems in Tibetan plateau High temperature systems are located in Tibet, Yunnan and Taiwan, The highest temperature measured is 260 C at 2000 depth in Yangbajain, Tibet. Well ZK4001 in vertical discharge in Yangbajain of Tibet, 2002 Yangbajain geothermal power plant in Tibet, 26MW, since 1970s
Low temperature convective systems in small fault basins Low temperature systems of convective type are located mainly found in small fault basins, with the highest temperature measured of C at wellhead in downtown Zhangzhou city, SE China. Temperature is dependent on the age and size of the basin. Pang Zhonghe, 1987, (Ph.D. thesis), Wang et al., 1993
Chemical geothermometry The FixAl method applied to Zhangzhou geothermal field gives reservoir temperature of 150. FixAl is suitable also for low temperature systems. (Pang & Reed, 1998, GCA):
SO 4 -H 2 O Oxygen isotope geothermometry The isotopic geothermometer used to evaluate the reservori temperature of Zhangzhou geothermal field, giving Pang Zhonghe, 2005,IAEA
Low temperature conductive systems in large sedimentary basins Low temperature systems of conductive type are located mainly in sedimentary basins the temperature of 90 C measured at wellhead in downtown Xi an.
Genesis model of Xiongxian geothermal system, North China Basin Low temperature systems of conductive type in North China Basin is formed by redistribution of heat flow as a result of tectonic variations. Modified from Chen et al., 1988
Radioactive tracer tests for reservoir management in Tinjian Activity (Bq/L) Time After Tracer Injection (Day) Zhao et al, 2002, IAEA workshop

Geothermal hazards in deep coal mines Shallow coal beds Coal mines at 800~1500 m Deep coal beds Shallow coal beds Deep coal beds
Geological sequestration of CO2 in deep saline aquifers while enhancing geothermal injectivity
Low rejection rate in Tianjin geothermal field Volume of Water( 10 4 m 3 ) Year Reinjection Production
