4 The Sixth IMACS International Conference on Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Wave Phenomena: Computation and Theory Recently, I had the pleasure of attending the Sixth IMACS International Conference on Nonlinear Evolution Equations and Wave Phenomena thanks to a travel award from the organizers. The conference covered a breadth of topics: from neural signals to light propagation in optical fibers to rogue waves in the ocean. The participant list read like a Who s Who in the theory and numerical simulation of nonlinear wave phenomena. I was able to have several illuminating discussions with experts, leaders, and pioneers in my field of research, which currently is the applications of transform pairs induced by nonlinear integrable equations to data analysis in oceanography and acoustics. Also, being able to present my own research at the conference and receive feedback from established researchers in the field was invaluable. In fact, it was precisely due to my attendance at the 2007 edition of this conference, which was also made possible by the generous financial support of the organizers, that my present research came to be. There, a synergetic interaction with another conference participant lead me to reconsider the classical numerical experiment of Zabusky and Kruskal. For this work, I am honored to say I received a Best Student Paper award at the 2009 conference. In the end, the support I received from the conference organizers helped me in making an advance in my area of research, establishing my presence amongst the leaders of the field and vastly increasing the scope of my knowledge of nonlinear wave phenomena.
