7 Coherent neutrino scattering with reactor neutrinos! The cross section is large. 7.4x10-42 cm 2 for Si 6.0x10-41 cm 2 for Ge But you must be capable of measuring small nuclear recoils. 7
8 CDMS detector technology Kilogram scale solid-state detectors (Si and Ge) capable of reading out both ionization and phonons. Nuclear recoils produce less ionization per recoil energy (more localized ) Alternatively, a large voltage bias can give a large phonon signal from ionization (Luke phonons) at the cost of electron/nuclear recoil discrimination Allowed 160 ev ee threshold in CDMSLite O(10 ev ee ) threshold may be achievable with recent advances e, n,, Catch Fedja Kadribasic s talk on directional detection at 5:20 in Session C NIM A 855, 8891 (2017) 8
9 Experimental setup Detectors within few meters of 1MW TRIGA reactor at Texas A&M College Station. Moveable core ideal for background studies and sterile neutrino searches. Recall (1/r 2 ) dictates (3.3m,1MW)=(20m,40MW)=(100m,1GW) First run with 1 tower of detectors. 1 detector capable of electron/nuclear recoil discrimination for background estimation. 5 detectors at large V bias (low nuclear recoil threshold.) 9
10 NIM A 853, 5360 (2017) In-situ background measurements Commercial HPGe detector to measure gamma backgrounds. Results agree well with MCNP reactor and Geant4 transport simulations. Iterating with shielding configurations. Multi-pronged approach to neutron backgrounds Activation Foils ( 63 Cu+n 0 64 Cu) 3 He counters LS counters 6 Li and PTP scintillator Bonner spheres w/ LiI(Eu) scintillator 10
11 Towards a region of interest (ROI) ROI: ev nr 5-20 coherent scattering evts/kg/day expected. Validated simulations show that we can reduce gamma and neutron backgrounds to 100 evts/kg/day. 11
12 Sensitivity to coherent neutrino scattering Two independent groups looking at MINER sensitivity. S:B of O(1:1) should allow quick 5σ discovery. Shape-based analysis allows faster discovery and increased precision over cut and count. 12
13 Sterile Neutrino Searches Hints for a fourth type of neutrino have been seen at: solar/radioactive source neutrino experiments (the Gallium Anomaly) accelerator experiments (LSND, MiniBooNE) reactor experiments (the reactor antineutrino anomaly) This is provoking a worldwide hunt PROSPECT (7-12m from 87 MW reactor) NEOS (24m from 2.8 GW reactor) DANSS (11-12m from 1 GW reactor) SoLid (6m, 10m from 85 MW reactor) STEREO (10m from a 58 MW reactor). All use inverse beta decay (v+p n+e + ) Coherent neutrino scattering has complementary kinematics and coupling ( e,, inclusive.) PRD (2016) 13
14 Other Possible Discoveries Coherent neutrino scattering at a reactor opens the door to new physics (Z, non-standard neutrino interactions, lightly interacting particles, warm dark matter, neutrino transport within supernovae ) n capture fission PRD (2016) 14
15 Coherent neutrino scattering and dark matter Coherent neutrino scattering provides an irreducible background to dark matter searches ( neutrino floor ). Measurement important to next generation of dark matter searches. Solar Neutrinos Atmospheric Neutrinos 15
16 Current Work Our current focus is largely dilution refrigeration, data acquisition and in-situ background measurements. 16
