exploring concentric circles with the Concentric Shape Box on the Sensorial Shelf. stapling 3 strips of paper of different lengths and using edge gluing so they stand up one inside the other. creating circle art work by overlapping circles of various sizes from the Circle Drawer of the Geometric Cabinet and coloring in portions of the circles different colors.
matching the cards and insets for the Circle Drawer of the Geometry Cabinet. discussing how to trace the frames to make circles. talking about how a circle is constant. sorting circles by shapes and colors. dancing to the songs The Circle Game and Round and Round. making a pizza pie with circles (tortilla shells & pepperoni yum! using circles to make a Pi Day teddy bear.
talking about circles. making circle collages. exploring how to measure a square with small square tiles, then showed how we couldn't measure a circle in the same way. playing a circle game during morning meeting. making Pi Day hats Writing steps to make pizza. making pizza pie for their snack. learning how to make halves & fourths. made paper pizzas and cut into halves or fourths.
making crowns with the pi symbol, the number and decorated with circles. learned about radius and diameter. made circles and found the diameter and radius and measured them. used our circles to make some art. reviewing fractions and eating some pie:) creating a "Pi Cityscape." graphing the first 20 digits of Pi and then decorated the area surrounding their new city.
reading Sir Cumference & The First Round Table measuring the circumference and diameter of a thin mint reciting a Pi day poem watching a brain pop video on Pi calculating the radius and diameter of perfect circles. creating pi poetry basing the # of words in each line on the digits of pi ( ex: 3 words in line 1, 1 word in line 2, 4 words in line 3,etc.) making Pi Day Skylines by graphing the first 16 digits of Pi. creating Pi Day Emotion Characters, then using those characters to practice dialogue and the use of quotation marks.
reading Sir Cumference & The Dragon of Pi. discovering the meaning of Pi by measuring various-sized circular objects and finding how many diameters they could get out of the circumference (this is that magical relationship that Pi represents). watching BrainPop video on Pi and taking interactive quiz. exploring how to use the diameter or radius to find circumference and area of a circle. solving the circumference and area of circles using 3.14, given either the radius or the diameter. reviewing the meaning of Pi and how we represent it usually by a rounded decimal of reviewing the formula for finding the circumference of a circle. Reading Sir Cumference & The Sword in the Cone. learning the formulas for the area of a circle and volume of cylinders, cones, & spheres. calculating the circumference and area of circles. calculating the volume of cylinders and cones.
designing an experiment to accurately calculate pi from the ratio of circumference to diameter in found objects. They also investigated whether the chosen system of measurement affected the result. extending their exploration of the Buffon s Needle method of estimating Pi by writing an experimental plan then testing their results. Students learned that there is a mathematical proof, using calculus, that supports their observations and applied the Law of Large Numbers to their conclusions.
