4 Where We Were Back in the Day (MN Highway Dept) Truck Stations were staffed at least 1 full shift during daylight hours Two people per truck (driver & wing-man) One-way Front plow (some with mid-mount benching wings) 10% Winter Sand was applied to provide traction at intersections and hills

5 Where We Were Training License requirements: Chauffer s License (written test only) Shown how to use equipment, then You re on Your Own Learned By the Seat of Your Pants

6 Where We Were Equipment, Materials & Technique Single-axle & Tandem-axle Dump trucks ~ One-way or V-plow, sander, shovel, chains 10% Winter Sand was applied to provide traction ~ Did not prevent/break snow/ice bond Plowed after the storm (daylight hours) Used motor graders to cut compaction

9 Where We Are Today (TSS) The efforts to continue to educate and change the way we do business (operations) is due, largely in part, to what we ve learned as a result of the environmental damage caused to Shingle Creek. The evolution of the Salt Symposium has been an important tool in raising our awareness.

11 Where We Are Going Today & Tomorrow Areas are typically fully-staffed hours per day Under-bodies are standard, with front plow and rear-mounted wings & sanders with computerized sander controllers Anti-Icing is performed to prevent the bond Salt is applied early and used according to weather conditions and based upon road temperatures
