CSI Pre-Algebra: Coordinate Plane Detectives, A thief working under the alias the Fifth Quadrant has traveled to the end of the earth to rock the world -- Antarctica. It is believed that the Fifth Quadrant is a member of the evil genius group, the Mathemagicians. From what the detectives have gathered thus far from the previous thefts, the Mathemagicians are building a world conquering device. Fortunatel, the Fifth Quadrant has left behind a trail of notes and a crptic tet message that she/he has told us will calculate toward her/his favorite number. Thus far there are si suspects that police have questioned. It is hoped that someone with a relativel strong number sense can crack some codes that have puzzled the detectives on the case so far. Your job is to bring the Fifth Quadrant to justice and save the planet. You need to be prepared to state our case and demonstrate our understanding of the following skills that the Fifth Quadrant is known to use in his notes. - Ordered Paris - Using Tables to Sketch Functions - Transformation of Points - Quadrants Be sure to include: - Other eamples of the concepts - Definitions - An other relevant information. This is not a time to be slopp. The slightest miscalculation or illegible footnote could result in a not guilt verdict. Oh, did I mention that use of a calculator might prematurel set off his world conquering device? Good luck to ou, gumshoe. Chief Harris
Who is the Fifth Quadrant? Name: Esvedi Occupation: Nurse Favorite Number: 75 Name: Vernon Occupation: Computer Programmer Favorite Number: 1010 Name: Linda Occupation: Accountant Favorite Number: 81 Name: Tomm Occupation: Game Show Host Favorite Number: -1 Name: George Occupation: Politician Favorite Number: 1776 Name: Victoria Occupation: Hair Stlist Favorite Number: -6
Scene #1 Australian Claim of Antarctica The Fifth Quadrant smuggled a bulldozer onto Antarctica and left with 9,000 pounds of ice. In the snow, investigators found the following note. Who sas there can t be 5 quadrants? Oh, our math teacher? Oh, the English Language? Oh, common sense? No matter. I AM the Fifth Quadrant and I m going to pummel ou with ordered pairs and coordinate planes until ou surrender. For m first puzzle, I have a secret code. Connect the coordinates for each shape in order to reveal our first clue (equal to 100) Shape 1: (-1, -1), (0, 1), (1, -1), (-1, -1) Shape 2: (-1, -2), (1, -2), (2, -4), (4, -4), (1, 2), (-1, 2), (-4, -4), (-2, -4), (-1, -2) = 100 Scene #2 French Claim of Antarctica A research center was broken into and $5,000 of ecavation equipment was taken. For the net puzzle, we shall onl use the Fifth Quadrant s favorite quadrant -- the first quadrant. Label the ais and plot the points from the table. Is the data linear or quadratic? time temperature Linear n = 7 Quadratic c = 19
Scene #3 Chilean Claim of Antarctica Researchers discovered that the largest famil of penguins was penguin-napped from their home. It is suspected that the Fifth Quadrant ma use their newest egg in the World Conquering Device. While I did epect to see a whole bunch of penguins, I didn t epect for them to talk and wear costumes. I guess that s something the don t want ou to know about Antarctica or else everone will move there. These four penguins have routines and will travel the same path each da (which happens to be a math function). There are 5 spots to catch fish toda. How man will catch a fish on their path? Use a table to determine points on the path of the function, plot them on the coordinate plane and sketch and label each line or curve. How man penguins will catch a fish? 1 a = 1 2 c = 2 3 t = 3
Scene #4 The South Pole -- Antarctica The top secret headquarters of Santa Claus was broken into the entire inventor of tos for the good girls and bos was taken! The Fifth Quadrant was immediatel put on the Naught List. Ever wonder where Santa s Workshop was? I found the big secret. It s actuall on the South Pole. All that North Pole talk is just one big fake out. Santa needs to round up his nine reindeer, but where are the? It might be surprising, but Santa onl speaks in ordered pairs (that s wh his sleigh has a GPS). At which point are there no reindeer? Pair Bank (3, -9) (0, -2) (5, 8) (-2, 1) (-6, -4) (-3, -2) (-3, -8) (7, 1) (-6, 7) (4, -1) Add the and coordinates of the leftover point. This will be equal to i i = Scene #5 Norwegian Claim of Antarctica Although the details are sketch, the Fifth Quadrant came upon the home of a previousl unknown alien race. The aliens were shaken b the encounter and the lost their proton plasma laser destroer! Another surprise! It turns out aliens live here too. The also use a plotting sstem not quite like ours. The are tring to complete their Alien Rectangle, but the need the last coordinate. What is it? C = 4 N = 5 R = 6
Scene #6 Orcadas Base -- Argentine Claim of Antarctica The oldest established station on Antarctica, the Orcadas Base was completel stolen! In its place, the Fifth Quadrant left this final note. A South Pole Epedition North, South, East and West are not a lot of help on Antarctica. In order to get from base to base, ou will need to follow directions. You will start at Orcadas Base and work from there. Where will ou end? 1. From Orcadas ou will translate 3 units to the right and 3 units down. You are now at: 2. From there ou will translate 3 units to the right and 4 units down. You are now at: 3. From there ou will translate 7 units up and 4 units to the left... You are now at: Neumaer Base (n =10) Halle Base (a =10) CRYPTIC PUZZLE SOLVER TEXT MESSAGE Five is better than four. A N + T A (R + C) + T i C + A ~The Fifth Quadrant
