Scope and Contents Note The Robert B. Ariail Collection contains the personal papers of Robert Ariail, a Columbia, South Carolina amateur astronomer, businessman, civic leader and historian of telescopes and scientific instruments. As a businessman, Ariail was the Chief Financial Officer and partner in Elliott-Ariail & Associates Insurance Company. Ariail s love for astronomy led him to historical research of telescopes and scientific instruments with an emphasis on Alvan Clark and Sons of Boston, Massachusetts. Ariail partnered with Deborah Jean Warner of the Smithsonian National Museum of American History to co-author the revision of Warner s Alvan Clark & Sons: Artists in Optics (1995, original 1968), which chronicles the history of the first domestic telescope manufacturers in the United States. Ariail s extensive research and interest in Alvan Clark and Sons led him to become a respected expert despite his keeping interest in astronomy a hobby. As an expert on Alvan Clark and Sons optics, Ariail was called assist the United States District Attorney in prosecuting the 18 year old theft of an 1896 Alvan Clark and Sons telescope lens from the Cincinnati Astronomical Society. Additionally, Ariail was called upon by other amateur astronomers to identify various telescopes and their manufacturers. In 1981 Ariail came across a Henry Fitz telescope at Erskine College that was in very bad shape. Ariail spent the next 13 years restoring the historic telescope and returned it to Erskine College in Erskine proceeded to donate the telescope to the South Carolina State Museum. In 2011, Ariail donated his extensive collection of telescopes and astronomy books to the joint partnership between the South Carolina State Museum and the University of South Carolina. In documenting the Ariail s papers, every effort has been made to retain Ariail s original filing system including file titles. In many cases related materials will
