7 Spanish Astronomy and the economic crisis The*economic*crisis*is*having*dire*consequences*in*the*Spanish*science* There*is*no*Ministry*of**Science*(science*policy*depends*on*the*Ministry*of*Economy*and* Compe..veness).* Investment*in*Science*and*Technology*is*falling*down*(1.33%*GDP*in*2011,*a*cutdown*of*31%*in* invested*money*in*the*last*2*years).* Public*funding*of*research*projects*is*suffering*dras.c*cuts* Strong*reduc.on*in*the*number*of*predoctoral*and*postdoctoral*fellowships* Permanent*jobs*in*research*are*becoming*a*chimera* Many*Spanish*universi.es*and*research*ins.tutes*are*facing*a*cash*crisis* Danger*in*the*Spanish*par.cipa.on*in*interna.onal*astronomy*programs*(ESO s*edelt,*op.onal* ESA*programmes, )* All*this*may*cause*a*long*term*damage*to*the*scien.fic*infrastructures*of*the*Spanish* Astronomy,*successfully*constructed*over*the*last*30*years*

8 EWASS (ideas and suggestions) Objec.ve:*to*increment*the*involvement*of*European*astronomers*in*its*organiza.on,* with*special*emphasis*in*the*par.cipa.on*of*young*astronomers,*and*with*the*aim* of*increasing*the*social*and*poli.cal*weight*of*eas*within*the*european*astronomy.* Not*too*thema.c,*but*with*broad*subjects.*Not*just*a*collec.on*of*symposia,*but*offering* topics*for*a*broader*audience*(more*similar*to*aas*mee.ngs)* To*encourage*the*par.cipa.on*of*earlyDcareer*astronomers*(junior*members*and*young* postdocs):*free*registra.on*fee*for*eas*junior*members,*generous*fellowship*program,*jobd market*ac.vi.es,*etc.** Elec.on*of*a*SOC*of*firstDrate*ac.ve*professionals*with*an*ample*vision*of*the*Astronomy* research*in*their*countries,*willing*to*support*the*par.cipa.on*of*the*young*astronomers.* The*aqendance*of*the*Presidents*(or*Vicepres.)*of*the*Na.onal*Socie.es*should*be* mandatory* Every*2*years,*completely*separated*from*the*Na.onal*mee.ngs* Much*more*adver.sing*from*the*Na.onal*Socie.es*to*our*members*(and*explain*what*are* the*advantages*of*becoming*an*eas*member)*
