Holographic Dark Energy Model with Generalized Chaplygin Gas arxiv: v1 [gr-qc] 31 Jul 007 B. C. Paul Physics Department, North Bengal University, Siliguri, Dist. : Darjeeling, Pin : , West Bengal, India P. Thakur Physics Department, Alipurduar College, Dist. : Jalpaiguri, India A. Saha Physics Department, Darjeeling Government College, Darjeeling, India Abstract We present a holographic dark energy model of the universe considering modified extension of the generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG). The modified GCG behaves as an ordinary barotropic fluid in the early epoch when the universe was tiny but behaves subsequently as a ΛCDM model as the universe grows. We determine the corresponding holographic dark energy field and its potential. The stability of the holographic dark energy in this case is also discussed. 2 1 Introduction: Recently, it has been predicted from data received from high redshift surveys of type Ia Supernova, WMAP, CMB etc. that our universe is passing through an accelerating phase of expansion [1]. It is also accepted that our universe have emerged from an accelerating phase in the past. Thus there was inflation in the very early universe and at late universe we have an accelerating universe with a matter dominated era in between. The Einstein general theory of Relativity (GR) with ordinary matter described by the Standard model of Particle physics cannot fully explain the observational facts in the universe. It is known that the early inflation may be realized in a semiclasical theory of gravity []. It is also known that a curvature squared term in the Einstein s action [3] also admits early inflation. A number of models of the early inflation with curvature squared terms [4] in the Einstein-Hilbert action also proposed when the advent of early inflation is known. In the semiclassical theory of gravity the equation of state p = ω ρ, permits inflation in the early universe if ω = 1 but for the present acceleration one requires ω < 1. The usual fields in the standard model of particle physics are not suitable to achieve the late accelerating phase of the universe. Thus it is a challenge to theoretical physics to formulate a framework to accommodate the observational facts. In order to explain the present accelerating expansion of the universe, concept of dark energy is incorporated. It is predicted that dark energy content of the universe is about 76 % of the total energy budget of the universe. In the last few years, various kinds of exotic matters are considered in the literature as possible candidates for the dark energy. Chaplygin gas is considered to be a possible candidate of dark energy with an equation of state p = B ρ [5], where ρ and p are the energy density and pressure respectively and B is a constant. Subsequently, a modified form of the equation of state p = B ρ α with 0 α 1 was considered to construct a viable cosmological model [6, 7],
which is known as generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG) in cosmology. The significance of this gas equation is that it behaves initially as a dust like matter which subsequently evolves to an asymptotic cosmological constant at late time when the universe is sufficiently large and in between it behaves as a mixture of a cosmological constant. At late time modified GCG behaves as a fluid obeying an equation of state p = ωρ. However, a more general modified Chaplygin gas is used in the literature obeying equation of state [8] given by p = Aρ B with 0 α 1. (1) ρα In the early universe when a(t) was small, the generalized modified Chaplygin gas corresponds to a barotropic fluid (as A = 1 3 corresponds to radiation and A = 0 corresponds to matter). So, the modifed Chaplygin gas at one extreme end behaves as an ordinary fluid but at the other extreme when the universe is sufficiently large it behaves as Cosmological constant which can be fit to a ΛCDM model. An epoch may exist when the gas behaves as pressureless fluid giving matter dominated universe. In a flat Friedmann model it is shown [6] that the Chaplygin gas may be equivalently described in terms of a homogeneous minimally coupled scalar field φ. Barrow [9] has outlined a method to fit Chaplygin gas in FRW universe. Kamenshchik et al. [10] using the above scheme obtained homogeneous scalar field φ(t) and a potential V (φ) to describe cosmological models with Chaplygin gas. Recently, holographic principle [11, 1] is incorporated in cosmology [13-16] to track the dark energy content of the universe following the work of Cohen et al. [17]. Holographic principle is a speculative conjecture about quantum gravity theories proposed by G t Hooft. The idea is subsequently promoted by Fischler ans Susskind [11] claiming that all the information contained in a spatial volume may be represented by a theory that lives on the boundary of that space. For a given finite region of space it may contain matter and energy within it. If this energy suppresses a critical density then the region collapses to a black 3
hole. A black hole is known theoretically to have an entropy which is proportional to its surface area of its event horizon. A black hole event horizon encloses a volume, thus a more massive black hole have larger event horizon and encloses larger volumes. The most massive black hole that can fit in a given region is the one whose event horizon corresponds exactly to the boundary of the given region under consideration. The maximal limit of entropy for an ordinary region of space is directly proportional to the surface area of the region and not to its volume. Thus, according to holographic principle, under suitable conditions all the information about a physical system inside a spatial region is encoded in the boundary. The basic idea of a holographic dark energy in cosmology is that the saturation of the entropy bound may be related to an unknown ultra-violet (UV) scale Λ to some known comological scale in order to enable it to find a viable formula for the dark energy which may be quantum gravity in origin and it is characterized by Λ. The choice of UV-Infra Red (IR) connection from the covariant entropy bound leads to a universe dominated by blackhole states. Cohen et al. [17] proposed that any state in Hilbert space with an energy E corresponds to Schwarzschild radius R s E which is less than the IR cut off value L (where L is a cosmological scale). It may now be possible to obtain a relation between the UV cutoff ρ 1/4 Λ and the IR cutoff which eventually leads to a constraint ( 8πG c ) L 3 ( ρ Λ3 ) L [18] where ρ Λ is the energy density corresponding to dark energy characterized by Λ. The holographic dark energy density is ρ Λ = 3c M P L, () where M P = 8πG. It is known that the present acceleration may be described if ω Λ = p Λ ρ Λ < 1 3. If one considers L 1 H it gives ω Λ = 0. A holographic cosmological constant model based on Hubble scale as IR cut off does not permit accelerating universe. It is also examined [13] that the holographic dark energy model based on the particle horizon 4
as the IR cutoff even does not work to get an accelerating universe. However, Li [14] has obtained an accelerating universe considering event horizon as the cosmological scale. The model is consistent with the cosmological observations. Thus to have a model consistent with observed universe one should adopt the covaiant entropy bound and choose L to be event horizon. The paper is organized as follows : in sec., the relevant field equation with modified Chaplygin gas in FRW universe is presented; in sec. 3, holographic dark energy fields in modified GCG is determined; in sec. 4, squared speed of sound for holographic dark energy is evaluated for a closed universe i.e., k = 1. Finally in sec. 5, a brief discussion. Modified Chaplygin Gas in FRW universe : The Einstein s field equation is given by G µν = 8πGT µν (3) with T µν is the energy momentum tensor. We consider a homogeneous and isotropic universe given by ds = dt + a (t) [ dr 1 kr + r (dθ + sin θ dφ ) ] (4) where a(t) is the scale factor of the universe, the matter is described by the energy momentum tensor T µ ν = (ρ,p,p,p), ρ and p are energy density and pressure respectively. Using the metric (4) and the energy momentum tensor, the Einstein s field equation (3) can be written as H + k a = 1 3MP ρ (5) where M P = 8πG. The energy conservation equation is dρ + 3H(ρ + p) = 0. (6) dt 5
Using eq. (6) for modified generalized Chaplygin gas given by eq. (1), we get ρ = ( ) 1 µ 1 + A + B 1+α a 3(1+A)(1+α) (7) where B is an arbitrary integration constant. We now define the following Ω Λ = ρ Λ ρ cr, Ω m = ρ m ρ cr, Ω k = k a H (8) where ρ cr = 3M P H, Ω Λ, Ω m and Ω k represents density parameter corresponding to Λ, matter and curvature respectively. We assume here that the origin of dark energy is a scalar field. In this case, using Barrow s scheme [9], we get the following ρ φ = 1 φ + V (φ) = p φ = 1 φ V (φ) = µ A+1 + A B a ( ) n µ A+1 + B α a n ( µ A B ) 1 α+1, (9) a n α+1, (10) where n = 3(1 + A)(1 + α). It is now simple to derive the scalar field potential and its kinetic energy term, which are given by V (φ) = µ A A B a n ( ) µ A+1 + B α α+1 a n, (11) φ = (A + 1) B a ( ) n µ A+1 + B α. (1) α+1 a n For a flat universe (k = 0), eq. (1) can be integrated which yields [ φ = ± ] sinh 1 B(A + 1) a n n µ (13) and the corresponding potential is given by V (φ) = µ 1+A + µ(1 A) ( µ 1+A ) φ ( 3(1+A)(1+α) (1+A) sinh ) α α+1 cosh α 1+α ( 3(1+A)(1+α) φ ). (14) However, for a non flat universe it is not so simple to obtain φ in known form. 6
3 Holographic Dark Energy in Modified GCG : In a FRW universe we now consider a non-flat universe with k 0 and use the holographic dark energy density as given in () which is ρ Λ = 3c M P L, (15) where c is the speed of light and L is the cosmological length scale for tracking the field corresponding to holographic dark energy in the universe. The parameter L is defined as L = ar(t). (16) where a(t) is the scale factor of the universe and r(t) is relevant to the future event horizon of the universe. Using Robertson-Walker metric one gets [15] [ k Rh ] L = a(t) sinn (t)/a(t). (17) k where R h represents the event horizon which is given by R h = a(t) t dt a(t ) = a(t) r1 o dr 1 kr. (18) Here R h is measured in r direction and L represents the radius of the event horizon measured on the sphere of the horizon. Using the definition of Ω Λ = ρ Λ ρ cr and ρ cr = 3M P H, one can derive [16] HL = c ΩΛ. (19) Using eqs. (17)- (18), we determine the rate of change of L with respect to t which is L = c 1 ( ) k Rh cosn, (0) ΩΛ k a(t) where 1 ( ) cosn k x = cos(x) [1,cosh(x)] for k = 1 [0, 1]. (1) k 7
Using eqs. (15) -(0), it is possible to construct the required equation for the holographic energy density ρ Λ, which is given by dρ Λ dt [ ( )] ΩΛ 1 k Rh = H 1 cosn c k a(t) ρ Λ. () The energy conservation equation is dρ Λ dt + 3H(1 + ω Λ)ρ Λ = 0 (3) which is used to determine the the equation of state parameter ( 1 ω Λ = 3 + ( )) ΩΛ 1 k Rh cosn. (4) 3c k a(t) Now we assume holographic dark energy density which is equivalent to the modified Chaplygin gas energy density. The corresponding energy density may be obtained using the equation of state given by (7). The equation of state parameter using (1) can also be re-written as ω = p ρ = A B ρα+1. (5) To determine dark energy fields we use eqs. (9) and (10) in eqs. (4)-(5). We get [ B = (3c MPL ) α+1 a n 1 3A + 1 3(A + 1) ( )] ΩΛ 1 k Rh cosn, (6) 3(A + 1)c k a(t) µ = (3c M P L ) α+1 [ The scalar field potential becomes A Ω Λ 3c 1 k cosn ( )] k Rh. (7) a(t) ( )] V (φ) = c MPL [1 ΩΛ 1 k Rh + cosn, (8) c k a(t) and the corresponding kinetic energy of the field is given by φ = c M PL [1 ΩΛ c 1 k cosn ( )] k Rh. (9) a(t) 8
Considering x (= ln a), we transform the time derivative to the derivative with logarithm of the scale factor, which is the most useful function in this case. We get φ = M P ΩΛ (1 ΩΛ c 1 k cosn ( )) k Rh a(t) (30) where () prime represents derivative with respect to x. Thus, the evolution of the calar field is given by φ(a) φ(a o ) = ln a M P o ΩΛ (1 ΩΛ c 1 k cosn ( )) k Rh dx. (31) a(t) 4 Squared speed for Holographic Dark Energy : We consider a closed universe model (k = 1) in this case. The dark energy equation of state parameter given by eq. (4) reduces to ω Λ = 1 3 ( 1 + ) ΩΛ cosy c (3) where y = R H a(t). The minimum value it can take is ω min = 1 ( ) ΩΛ and one obtains a lower bound ω min = for ω Λ = 0.76 with c = 1. Taking variation of the state parameter with respect to x = ln a, we get [16] Ω Λ = ΩΛ 3c [ 1 ΩΛ 1 γa + ΩΛ ( 1 Ω Λ cos y) ]. (33) c We now introduce the squared speed of holographic dark energy fluid as where varaiation of eq. (5) w.r.t. x is given by vλ = dp Λ = ṗλ = p Λ, (34) dρ Λ ρ Λ ρ Λ p Λ = ω Λρ Λ + ω Λ ρ Λ. (35) Using the eqs. (34) and (35) we get v Λ = ω Λ ρ Λ ρ Λ + ω Λ 9
which now becomes v Λ = 1 3 3c ΩΛ cosy + 1 6c ΩΛ 1 Ω Λ 1 γa + c ( ΩΛ 1 ΩΛ cos y ) 1 Ω Λ c cosy. (36) The variation of v Λ with Ω Λ is shown in fig. 1 for different y values. It is found that for a given value of c, a, γ, the model admits a positive squared speed for Ω Λ > 0. However, Ω Λ is bounded below otherwise instability develops. We note also that for (n+1)π < y < (n+3)π, (where n is an integer) no instability develops. We plot the case for n = 0 in fig. 1, it is evident that for y π and y 3π, the squared speed for holographic dark energy becomes negative which led to instability. But for the region π < y < 3π with n = 0 no such instability develops. It is also found that for y = 0 i.e., in flat case the holographic dark energy model is always unstable [0]. 5 Discussions : In this letter we explored the holographic dark energy model in FRW universe with a scalar field which describes the modified generalized Chaplygin gas (GCG). In the case of a flat FRW-universe, the corresponding potential for Chaplygin gas is V = 1 A ρ + B ρ α. Thus when ρ i.e., a 0 one obtains the following : (i) V (φ) for A 1, (ii) V (φ) 0 for A = 1. However, when a i.e., φ 0, the potential asymptotically atttains a constant value (φ) ( ) 1 µ 1+α A+1. We obtain the evolution of the holographic dark energy field and the corresponding potential in the framework of modified GCG in a non flat universe. For A = 0 and α = 1, the equation of state given by (1) reduces to the Chaplygin gas which was considered by Setare [19] to derive the fields of dark energy. We note that in the closed model the holographic dark energy is stable for a restricted domain of the values of Ω Λ. It is also observed that inclusion of a barotropic fluid in addition to Chaplygin gas (which is modified GCG) does not alter the form of potential and evolution 10
Figure 1: shows the plot of v Λ versus Ω Λ for different values of y with c = 1, γ = 1/3 and a = 1, in the first array the figures are for y = π 3 and y = π, in the second array for y = 1.5 π, y = π and in the third array for y =.5 π, y = 3π. 11
of the holograpic dark energy field but the parameter B in the equation of state becomes proportional to a n with n = 3(1 + A)(1 + α). Thus the contribution of the holographic dark energy is more if (A 0) compared to the case when one considers A = 0 as was done in Ref. [19]. Thus it is noted that although the form of the potential does not have impact on the addition of a barotropic fluid it changes the overall holographic dark energy density. It is found that the holographic dark energy is stable for a restricted domain of the values of Ω Λ in a closed model of the universe.
