1 Physics Syllabus UNIT 1: INTRODUCTION AND MEASUREMENT 1. Physics Scope and excitement; 2. Physics in relation to science, society and technology inventions, names of scientists and their fields, nobel prize winners and topics, current developments in physical sciences and related technology. 3. Units for measurement systems of units, S.I units, conversion from other systems to S.I units. Fundamental and derived units. 4. Measurement of length, mass and time, least count in measuring instruments (eg. vernier calipers, screw gauge etc), 5. Dimensional analysis and applications, 6. order of magnitude, 7. accuracy and errors in measurement, 8. random and instrumental errors, 9. significant figures and rounding off principles. UNIT 2 : DESCRIPTION OF MOTION IN ONE DIMENSION 1. Objects in motion in one dimension Motion in a straight line, 2. uniform motion its graphical representation and formulae; 3. speed and velocity instantaneous velocity; 4. ideas of relative velocity with expressions and graphical representations; 5. Uniformly accelerated motion, position time graph, velocity time graph and formulae. 6. Elementary ideas of calculus differentiation and integration applications to motion. UNIT 3 : DESCRIPTION OF MOTION IN TWO AND THREE DIMENSIONS 1. Vectors and scalars, 2. vectors in two and three dimensions, 3. unit vector, 4. addition and multiplication of vector, 5. resolution of vector in a plane, 6. rectangular components, 7. scalar and vector products. 8. Motion in two dimensions projectile motion, 9. ideas of uniform circular motion, 10. linear and angular velocity, 11. relation between centripetal acceleration and angular speed.

Force and inertia, 2. first law of motion, 3. momentum, 4. second law of motion, 5. forces in nature, 6. impulse, 7. third law of motion, 8. conservation of linear momentum, 9. examples of variable mass situation, 10. rocket propulsion, 11. equilibrium of concurrent forces. Static and kinetic friction, 12. laws of friction, 13. rolling friction, 14. lubrication. 15. Inertial and non-inertial frames (elementary ideas); 16. Dynamics of uniform circular motion centripetal and centrifugal forces, 17. examples : banking of curves and centrifuge. UNIT 5 : WORK, ENERGY AND POWER : 1. Work done by a constant force and by a variable force, 2. units of work Energy kinetic and potential forms, 3. power, 4. work-energy theorem. 5. Elastic and inelastic collisions in one and two dimensions. 6. Gravitational potential energy and its conversion to kinetic energy, 7. spring constant, 8. potential energy of a spring, 9. Different forms of energy, 10. mass energy equivalence (elementary ideas), 11. conservation of energy, 12. conservative and non-conservative forces. UNIT 6: MOTION OF SYSTEM OF PARTICLES AND RIGID BODY ROTATION 1. Centre of mass of a two particle system, 2. generalisation to N particles, 3. momentum conservation and center of mass motion, 4. applications to some familiar systems, 5. center of mass of rigid body.

Equilibrium of rigid bodies, rigid body rotation and equation of rotational motion, comparison of linear and rotational motions, moment of inertia and its physical significance, radius of gyration, parallel and perpendicular axes theorems (statements only), moment of inertia of circular ring and disc, cylinder rolling without slipping. UNIT 7 : GRAVITATION 1. Universal law of gravitation, 2. gravitational constant (G) and acceleration due to gravity (g), 3. weight and gravitation, 4. variation of g with altitude, latitude, depth and rotation of earth. 5. Mass of earth, 6. gravitational potential energy near the surface of the earth, 7. gravitational potential, 8. escape velocity, 9. orbital velocity of satellite, 10. weightlessness, 11. motion of geostationary and polar satellites, 12. statement of Kepler s laws of planetary motion, 13. proof of second and third laws, 14. relation between inertial and gravitational masses. UNIT 8 : MECHANICS OF SOLIDS AND FLUIDS a. Solids : i. Hooke s law, ii. stress strain relationships, iii. Youngs modulus, iv. bulk modulus, v. shear modulus of rigidity, vi. some practical examples. b. Fluids : i. Pressure due to fluid column, ii. Pascal s law and its applications (hydraulic lift and hydraulic brakes), iii. effect of gravity on fluid pressure, iv. Buoyancy, v. laws of floatation and 49 KEAM-2012, CEE, TVM Archimedes principles, atmospheric pressure.

Surface energy and surface tension, angle of contact, vii. examples of drops and babbles, capillary rise, detergents and surface tension, viscosity, sphere falling through a liquid column, Stokes law, streamline flow, Reynold s number, equation of continuity, Bernoulli s theorum and applications. 1. UNIT 9 : HEAT AND THERMODYNAMICS a. Kinetic theory of gases, b. assumptions, c. concept of pressure, d. kinetic energy and temperature, e. mean-rms and most probable speed, f. degrees of freedom, g. statement of law of equipartition of energy, h. concept of mean free path and i. Avogadros number. j. Thermal equilibrium and temperatures, k. zeroth law of thermodynamics, l. Heat-work and internal energy, m. Thermal expansion thermometry. n. First law of thermodynamics and o. examples, specific heat, specific heat of gases at constant volume and constant pressure, specific heat of solids, Dulong and Petit s law. Thermodynamical variables and equation of state, phase diagrams, ideal gas equation, isothermal and adiabatic processes, reversible and irreversible processes, Carnot engines, refrigerators and heat pumps, efficiency and coefficient performance of heat engines, ideas of second law of thermodynamics with practical applications. Thermal radiation Stefan-Boltzmann law, Newton s law of cooling. UNIT 10 : OSCILLATIONS 2. Periodic motion period, frequency, displacement as a function of time and periodic functions; 3. Simple harmonic motion (S.H.M) and its equation, 4. uniform circular motion and simple harmonic motion, 5. oscillations of a spring, restoring force and force constant, 6. energy in simple harmonic motion, 7. kinetic and potential energies, 8. simple pendulum derivation of expression for the period; 9. forced and damped oscillations and resonance (qualitative ideas only), coupled oscillations.

Forces between multiple electric charges; 5. Superposition principle and continuous charge distribution. 6. Electric field and its physical significance, 7. electric field due to a point charge, 8. electric field lines; 9. Electric dipole, 10. electric field due to a dipole and behavior and 11. dipole in a uniform electric field. 12. Electric potential-physical meaning, 13. potential difference, 14. electric potential due to a point charge, 15. a dipole and system of charges; 16. Equipotential surfaces, 17. Electrical potential energy of a system of point charges, 18. electric dipoles in an electrostatic field. 19. Electric flux, 20. statement of Gauss theorem-its application to find field due to an infinitely long straight wire, uniformly charged infinite plane sheet and uniformly charged thin spherical shell. 21.
