On Beltrami equations and Hölder regularity arxiv:math/ v [math.ap] 6 Feb 2006 Tonia Ricciardi Dipartimento di Matematica e Applicazioni R. Caccioppoli Università di Napoli Federico II Via Cintia, 8026 Napoli, Italy fax: tonia.ricciardi@unina.it Abstract We estimate the Hölder exponent α of solutions to the Beltrami equation f = µ f, where the Beltrami coefficient satisfies µ <. Our estimate improves the classical estimate α K µ, where K µ = (+ µ )/( µ ), and it is sharp, in the sense that it is actually attained in a class of mappings which generalize the radial stretchings. Some other properties of such mappings are also provided. Key Words: linear Beltrami equation, measurable coefficients, Hölder regularity MSC 2000 Subject Classification: 30C62 (35J25) Introduction and main results Let Ω be a bounded open subset of R 2 and let f W,2 loc (Ω,C) satisfy the Beltrami equation () f = µ f a.e. in Ω, where µ L (Ω,C) satisfies µ <, = ( +i 2 )/2, = ( i 2 )/2. By classical results, see, e.g., Iwaniec and Martin [4], there exists α (0,) such that f is α-hölder continuous in Ω. Namely, for every compact T Ω there exists C T > 0 such that Moreover, let f(z) f(z ) z z α C T z,z T, z z. K µ = + µ µ denote the distortion function. Then, the following estimate holds: (2) α K µ. Supported in part by the MIUR National Project Variational Methods and Nonlinear Differential Equations.
This estimate is sharp, in the sense that it reduces to an equality on the radial stretchings (3) f(z) = z α z. Indeed, the function f defined above satisfies the Beltrami equation () with Beltrami coefficient given by µ(z) = ( α)/(+α)z z, and a simple computation yields K µ α. We also note that f defined in (3) satisfies the pointwise equality (4) Df(z) 2 = α J f, which is of interest in the context of quasiconformal mappings. There exists a wide literature concerning the regularity theory for (), in the degenerate case where µ =, or equivalently, when the distortion function K µ is unbounded. See, e.g., [, 2, 4, 5], and the references therein. Our aim in this note is to extend the classical estimate (2) in another sense, by subtracting a correction term to K µ. Theorem. Let f W,2 loc (Ω,C) satisfy the Beltrami equation (). Then, f is α-hölder continuous with ( (5) α ess sup K µ 2 µ +Re( µ,n 2) ) } S ρ (x) S ρ(x) µ 2, where n denotes the outer unit normal. Here, (, ) denotes the standard inner product in C, and n 2 is understood in the complex multiplication sense. That is, for every y = x + ρe it S ρ (x), we have n(y) = e it, (µ,n 2 )(y) = µ(y)e 2it = µ(y)e 2it. In particular, µ + Re ( µ,n 2) 0, and therefore ess sup K µ 2 µ +Re( µ,n 2) } S ρ (x) S ρ(x) µ 2 esssup K µ K µ. S ρ (x) S ρ(x) It follows that estimate (5) indeed improves (2). Moreover, our estimates are sharp, in the following sense. For every M >, let (6) c = c(m) = 2 +M and let k 0 : R R be the bounded, 2π-periodic function defined by, if θ [0,cπ/2) [π,π +cπ/2) (7) k 0 (θ) = M, otherwise. Let Θ,Θ 2 : R R be the 2π-periodic Lipschitz functions defined by sin(c θ π/4), θ [0,cπ/2) cos(c M(θ cπ/2) π/4), θ [cπ/2,π) Θ (θ) = sin(c (θ π) π/4), θ [π,π +cπ/2) cos(c M(θ π cπ/2) π/4), θ [π +cπ/2,2π) 2
and cos(c θ π/4), θ [0,cπ/2) sin(c M(θ cπ/2) π/4), θ [cπ/2,π) Θ 2 (θ) = cos(c (θ π) π/4), θ [π,π +cπ/2) sin(c M(θ π cπ/2) π/4), θ [π +cπ/2,2π). The sharpness of Theorem is a consequence of the following. Theorem 2. Let B the unit disk in R 2 and let f 0 W,2 (B,C) be defined in B \0} by f 0 (z) = z /c (Θ (argz)+iθ 2 (argz)). Let µ 0 (z) = k 0(argz) +k 0 (argz) z z. Then f 0 satisfies () with µ = µ 0. Furthermore, there exists M > such that ess sup K µ0 2 µ 0 +Re ( µ 0,n 2) } S ρ (x) S ρ(x) µ 0 2 = c, for every M (, M). Our proof of Theorem is based on the equivalence between Beltrami equations and elliptic divergence form equations with unit determinant, to which we can apply some recent results in [6]. On the other hand, in order to prove Theorem 2, we shall use some properties of a class of mappings which generalize the radial stretchings. More precisely, we consider mappings of the form: (8) f(z) = z α (η (argz)+iη 2 (argz)) and coefficients of the form (9) µ(z) = k(argz) +k(argz) z z for some 2π-periodic functions η,η 2,k, k. We prove: Proposition. Suppose µ is of the form (9) and f satisfies (8). Then f is a a solution to () if and only if (η,η 2 ) satisfies the first order system: η = αkη 2 (0) η 2 = αkη. Furthermore, for every z 0 the following equality holds: () Df 2 = k(argz)j f, where Df denotes the operator norm of Df. We note that mappings of the form (8) generalize the radial stretchings (3). Indeed, when η (θ) = cosθ and η 2 (θ) = sinθ, (8) reduces to (3). We expect that mappings of the form (8) should be of interest in relation to other results on quasiconformal mapping theory and elliptic equations, as well. 3
Notation Henceforth, for every measurable function f, sup f denotes the essential upper bound of f. All integrals are taken with respect to the Lebesgue measure. 2 Proofs We use some results in [6] for solutions to the elliptic divergence form equation (2) div(a ) = 0 in Ω where A is a bounded, symmetric matrix-valued function satisfying (3) deta = a.e. in Ω. More precisely, let cosθ sinθ (4) J(θ) =. sinθ cosθ The following results were established in [6]. Theorem 3 ([6]). The following estimates hold. (i) Let w W,2 loc (Ω) be a weak solution to (2), where A satisfies (3). Then, w is α-hölder continuous with ( α n,an ), S ρ (x) sup where n denotes the outer unit normal. S ρ(x) (ii) Let A 0 be the symmetric matrix-valued function satisfying (3) defined for every z 0 by k0 (argz) 0 A 0 (z) = J(argz) 0 k0 (argz) J (argz), where k 0 is the function defined in (7). There exists M > such that 2 (5) sup n,a 0 n = c = S ρ (x) +M, S ρ(x) for every M (, M). Furthermore, the function u 0 = z /c Θ (argz) is a weak solution to (2) with A = A 0. The reduction of Beltrami equations to elliptic divergence form equations satisfying (3) is well-known. For the reader s convenience and for uniformity of notation, we sketch it below. Lemma. Let f W,2 loc (Ω,C) satisfy the Beltrami equation (). Let A µ = (a µ,ij ) be the bounded, symmetric matrix-valued function satisfying (3), defined in terms of the Beltrami coefficient µ = µ +iµ 2, µ (z),µ 2 (z) R, by (6) a µ, = 2µ + µ 2 µ 2 a µ,22 = +2µ + µ 2 µ 2 a µ,2 = a µ,2 = 2µ 2 µ 2. 4
Then u = Ref and v = Imf are a weak solutions to the elliptic equation (2) with A = A µ. Proof. We have: Setting f = 2 Q = ux v y u y +v x 0 0 f = 2 R = ux +v y. u y +v x 0, 0 for every z = a+ib = (a,b) T we have ( b a Qz = = iz, Rz = = z. a b) Hence, we can write f = 2 ( u+q v), f = R 2 ( u Q v). Setting M = equation () can be written in the form: It follows that and consequently u satisfies and v satisfies A straightforward computation yields µ µ 2, µ 2 µ u+q v = MR( u Q v). (I MR) u = (I +MR)Q v (I +MR) (I MR) u = Q v Q(I MR) (I +MR)Q v = Q u. (I +MR) (I MR) = A µ = Q(I MR) (I +MR)Q. Now the conclusion follows observing that div(q ) = 0. Proof of Theorem. In view of Lemma and Theorem 3, Ref and Imf are α-hölder continuous with ( α sup n,a µ n ), S ρ (x) S ρ(x) where A µ is defined in (6). Setting ξ = x+ρe it, t R for every ξ S ρ (x) Ω, we have n(ξ) = e it. Hence, we compute n(ξ),a µ (ξ)n(ξ) = e it,a µ (ξ)e it =a µ, cos 2 t+2a µ,2 sintcost+a µ,22 sin 2 t = + µ 2 µ 2 2µ cos2t+µ 2 sin2t µ 2. 5
Using the identity we have on S ρ (x) + µ 2 µ 2 +2 µ µ 2 = + µ µ = K µ, (7) n,a µ n = K µ 2 µ +Re( µ,n 2) and we conclude the proof. µ 2 Now we prove some properties for the special case where the Beltrami coefficient µ is of the form (9). Lemma 2. Suppose µ is of the form (9). Then A µ as defined in (6) is given by k(argz) 0 A µ (z) =J 0 k J (argz) ( kcos = 2 θ +k sin 2 ( θ ) ) k k sinθcosθ k k sinθcosθ k cos 2 θ +ksin 2. θ Proof. Setting θ = argz, we have and therefore, We compute µ = k +k e2iθ µ = k +k cos2θ µ 2 = k +k sin2θ. µ 2 = In view of (6), we have and consequently Similarly, Finally, 4k (+k) 2 + µ 2 = 2 +k2 (+k) 2. ( µ 2 )a µ, = 2µ + µ 2 = 2 cos2θ+k2 (+cos2θ) (+k) 2 a µ,2 = 2 µ 2 =4 sin2 θ +k 2 cos 2 θ (+k) 2 a µ, = kcos 2 θ+ k sin2 θ. a µ,22 = k cos2 θ+ksin 2 θ. µ 2 = 2 k +k sin2θ(+k)2 = 4 ( k ) sinθcosθ. k 6
In what follows it will be convenient to use polar cooordinates x = ρcosθ, y = ρsinθ. We recall that = 2 ( x +i y ) = ( z 2 z ρ +i z ) z 2 θ = 2 ( x i y ) = ( z 2 z ρ i z ) z 2 θ. Hence, () is equivalent to z z f ρ +i z z z 2f θ = µ z f z ρ i z 2f θ, from which we derive the polar form of the Beltrami equation (): (8) (e iθ µe iθ )f ρ = i ρ (eiθ +µe iθ )f θ. Finally, we prove Proposition. Proof of Proposition. Proof of (0). If µ and f are as given, we have ( e iθ µe iθ =e iθ k ) = 2k +k +k eiθ e iθ +µe iθ =e iθ ( + k +k ) = 2 +k eiθ. Since f ρ = αρ α (η +iη 2 ) and f θ = ρ α (η +iη 2), we derive from (8) αk(η +iη 2 ) = i(η +iη 2 ), which in turn implies (0). Proofof (). We regard f as a mapping from (Ω,dρ 2 +ρ 2 dθ 2 ) to (R 2,dx 2 + dy 2 ). Writing f = ρ α η +ρ α η 2 2, for every ξ = ξ ρ ρ +ξ θ θ we have Hence, dfξ = ρ α [(αη ξ ρ +ρη ξ θ ) +(αη 2 ξ ρ +ρη 2ξ θ ) 2 ]. ρ 2(α ) dfξ 2 = α 2 (η 2 +η 2 2)ξ 2 ρ +2αρ(η η +η 2 η 2)ξ ρ ξ θ +ρ 2 (η 2 +η 2 2 )ξ 2 θ. In viewof (0), wehaveη η +η 2η 2 = 0andη 2 +η 2 2 = α2 k 2 (η 2+η2 2 ). Therefore, dfξ 2 = ρ 2(α ) α 2 (η 2 +η 2 2) ( ξ 2 ρ +ρ 2 k 2 ξ 2 θ). On the other hand, ξ 2 = ξρ 2 +ρ2 ξθ 2. It follows that df 2 α 2 ρ 2(α ) (η 2 +η2)(ξ 2 ρ 2 +ρ 2 k 2 ξθ 2 =sup ) ξ 0 ξρ 2 +ρ 2 ξθ 2 =α 2 ρ 2(α ) (η 2 +η2)sup 2 +ρ 2 k 2 t t>0 +ρ 2 = α 2 k 2 ρ 2(α ) (η 2 +η 2 t 2). 7
In order to compute J f, we note that in polar coordinates on R 2 the Hodge star operator satisfies = ρdρ dθ and =. Hence, J f = (dref dimf) =αρ 2α (η η 2 η η 2) (dρ dθ) =αρ 2(α ) (η η 2 η η 2 ). In view of (0), we have η η 2 η η 2 = αk(η 2 +η2 2 ). It follows that and, finally, that J f = α 2 kρ 2(α ) (η 2 +η2 2 ) df 2 = kj f for every z 0. Now () is established. Proof of Theorem 2. By direct check, (Θ,Θ 2 ) is a solution to system (0) with k = k 0 and α = c, where c is defined in (6). Hence, in view of Proposition, the function f 0 = ρ /c (Θ +iθ 2 ) is a solution to the Beltrami equation () with µ = µ 0. By Lemma, Ref 0 and Imf 0 are solutions to the elliptic equation (2), with A = A 0 the matrix-valued funtion defined in Theorem 3 (ii). In view of (7), we have c = = ( ( for every M (, M). sup sup Acknowledgments S ρ(x) S ρ(x) n,a 0 n ) K µ0 2 µ 0 +Re ( µ 0,n 2) ) } µ 0 2 I thank Professor Kari Astala for interesting and fruitful discussions.
