We report exat analytial expressions loating the, and 4 bifuration urves for a prototypial system of two linearly oupled quadrati maps. Of interest is the preise loation of the parameter sets where Naimark-Saker bifurations our, starting from a non-diagonal period- orbit. This result is the key to understand the onset of synhronization in networks of quadrati maps. Key words: Synhronization, Quasiperiodiity, Naimark-Saker Bifuration PACS: 5.45.Pq, 5.45.Xt,.3.Oz An essential lue to understand how dynamial systems synhronize and the origin of their riddled basins of attration is provided by the mehanisms underlying the transverse desestabilization of low periodi orbits embedded in haoti attrators[,,3,4]. So far, these mehanisms have been investigated only via diret numerial simulation of the dynamis. The purpose of this paper is to report exat analytial results for a prototypi model, two linearly oupled quadrati maps, defined by the following pair of equations x t+ = a x t +b (x t y t ), y t+ = a y t +b (y t x t ). () Here x t, y t represent dynamial variables, a is the loal nonlinearity, b the oupling, and t =,,,... is the disrete time. 2 osillators are nowadays used in pratial appliations, e.g., in the investigation of oupled p-n juntions [5] and of Josephson-juntion arrays [6]. They also serve as useful approximations of nonlinear partial differential equations desribing, for example, the onset of fluid turbulene [7] and reation diffusion systems [8]. Previous analytial results were obtained using linear stability analysis[9,,], and renormalization theory[]. Here we go well beyond this presenting (i) the algebrai varieties delimiting stability domains for motions of periods and, and, (ii) the Naimark-Saker line (also alled Hopf bifuration line) showing where quasiperiodiity stabilizes following a period- osillation. The motivation for onsidering this problem anew is our interest in using more realisti and flexible maps as loal osillators in appliations dealing with diffusive-advetive effets like, e.g. in oean onvetion[3,4,5]. For additional disussion of problems involving oupled systems we refer the reader to the exellent tutorials in Refs. [,,3,4]. As is well-known[6,7], there are three ways in whih a fixed point p of a disrete map f may fail to be hyperboli: Df(p) may have an eigenvalue +, an eigenvalue, or a pair of omplex eigenvalues, say λ and λ, with λ =. The first two situations are familiar from period-doubling asades and appear muh more frequently than the last one. But it is preisely this last situation, harateristi of a Naimark-Saker bifuration, that is of great interest for oupled systems and that we onsider here. Equation () has four fixed points, two diagonal and two non-diagonal: D (x,x ), D (x,x ), N (x 3,x 4 ), N (x 4,x 3 ), () wherex = ( +ξ)/,x = ( ξ)/,x 3 = (b +η)/,x 4 = (b η)/, and ξ = +4a and η = +4a 4b. The stability of these points is ruled by the equation J λi =, where λ is theeigenvalue, I is theidentity matrix and J is the Jaobian matrix of the mapping. The eigenvalues of these four fixed points are always real, with D, N and N being always unstable sine at least one of their eigenvalues is larger than. The remaining fixed point, D, is stable in the region delimited by /4 < a < 3/4 and +4a/ < b < +4a/, bounded by the urves a = 4, a = 3 4, 4a 4b + =, 4a 4b 3 8b =, shown in Fig.. The stable fixed point bifurates into two quite different period- orbits when one inreases a, depending on the value of b. When rossing the line a = 3/4 one finds diagonal period- orbits with signature (u,u) (v,v) (u,u)..., where u = ( + 3+4a)/ and v = ( 3+4a)/. We denote suh orbits by PD. Beyond the urve = one finds non diagonal orbits with a signature (s,t) (t,s) (s,t)... where s = (b + +

Numbers indiate periods. 4a 4b 8b 3)/ and t = (b + 4a 4b 8b 3)/. These we represent by P. The PD orbit has real eigenvalues and is stable in the domain delimited by the urves a = 3 4, a = 5 4, 3 4a 4b 3+4b =, 5 4a 4b 5+4b =. It loses stability along 5 = or a = 5/4, after a 4 bifuration. There is a P4D diagonal orbit when rossing the line a = 5/4, and a P4 non-diagonal orbit when rossing 5 =. The eigenvalues of the P orbit are λ ± = 6b +b 4a+4±b 5b +b 4a+4 (3) and an be omplex. From these expressions we obtain[6] the following formula for the Naimark-Saker bifuration line: a NS = b + 5 b (4) It is important to observe that the linear oupling of the osillators was fundamental in allowing the derivation of the above analytial result. Already a 3

Different gray shadings represent stability domains of attrators with different periods. quadrati oupling generates formulas whih are intratable with present day hardware and ommerially available software. From the eigenvalues along = as well as the ondition λ = λ = we find that: (i) for b >, an unstable P orbit is born along = stabilizing however along 4 = 4a 4b 3 b =, and (ii) for < b <, a stable P orbit is born, also along =. Figure summarizes all period- bifuration loi. In the small diamond-shaped region infig., delimited by 3 =, 4 =, 5 = and the Naimark-Saker line (indiated by NS), there is oexistene of P and PD motions. On the NS line the P orbit disappears, to give rise to two losed urves (limit yles). The stability domains for the oupled quadrati maps an be generated numerially, using the method desribed in Ref. [8], and they are shown in Fig., displaying the rihness of the several oexisting motions in parameter spae. In this figure the basin of unbounded (diverging) attrators is indiated by. The lower border line seen between the P domain and blak domain is defined by the Naimark-Saker line. This means that inside the blak domain, immediately below the P region, we have quasiperiodi motion with two limit yles originated from P trajetories. As we penetrate more and more into this blak region, we reah a region of haos. The same happens 4
5 .5 y x Fig. 3. Quasiperiodiity and haos seen in the phase-spae of two linearly oupled quadrati maps. For a =.5 and (x,y ) = (.34,.5), points have been plotted, after a transient of 4 iterations. Shown are three quasiperiodi solutions, for b =.35,.38,.4. Here, smaller b orresponds to larger radius. A frequeny-loked solution with period-6 appears at b =.4(not shown in the figure). The ompliated dotted struture is a haoti orbit for b =.46. for P4 osillations, the differene in this latter ase being that the region of quasiperiodi motions has four limit yles originated from P4 orbits. Figure 3 shows the birth and evolution of the Naimark-Saker bifuration in phase spae when we walk along the vertial line a =.5 in parameter spae. Here we plotted the amplitudes of the maps for four representatives values of the parameter b. For b lose to the Naimark-Saker line the motion overs a losed urve and is quasiperiodi. For smaller values of b, a quasiperiodi transition to haos takes plae. Periodi windows, not visible in Fig. 3, appear in this route to haos via quasiperiodiity. We demonstrated that two linearly oupled quadrati maps an show quasiperiodi motion arising from a Naimark-Saker bifuration of a P orbit. This was shown analytially and orroborated through a numerial simulation, as may be seen from the similarity between Figs. and. The first figure was obtained analytially while the seond numerially. The preise analytial determination of the Naimark-Saker road to stable quasiperiodi motions opens the possibility of several numerial experiments, in partiular, to appliations onneted with synhronization in networks of maps[3,4,5]. Another inter- 5
6 esting appliation is to investigate how a mismath in the parameters would affet the bifuration struture. These appliations will be reported elsewhere. Referenes [] S.
