AROUND OPERATOR MONOTONE FUNCTIONS MOHAMMAD SAL MOSLEHIAN AND HAMED NAJAFI arxiv: v1 [math.fa] 3 Oct 11 Abstract. We show that the symmetrized product AB + BA of two positive operators A and B is positive if and only if f(a+b f(a+f(b for all non-negative operator monotone functions f on [, and deduce an operator inequality. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for that the composition f g of an operator convex function f on [, and a non-negative operator monotone function g on an interval (a, b is operator monotone and give some applications. 1. Introduction Let B(H denote the algebra of all bounded linear operators on a complex Hilbert space(h,,. AnoperatorA B(H iscalledpositive if Ax,x holdsforevery x H and then we write A. The set of all positive operators on H is denoted by B(H +. For self-adjoint operators A,B B(H, we say A B if B A. The symmetrized product of two operators A,B B(H is defined by S(A,B = AB + BA. In general, the symmetrized ( product of two ( operators A,B B(H + is not positive. For example, if A = and B =, then AB+BA is not 1 1 a positive operator. The operator 1 S(A,B is called the Jordan product of A and B. Nicholson [11] and Strang [1] introduced some sufficient conditions for that the Jordan product of two positive matrices A and B is positive. Also Gustafson [7] showed that if m A M and n B N, then mn (M m(n n 8 1 S(A,B. (1 Throughout the paper we assume all functions to be continuous. Let f be a real-valued function defined on an interval J. If for each self-adjoint operators A,B B(H with spectra in J, A B implies f(a f(b, then f is called operator monotone; 1 Mathematics Subject Classification. Primary 47A63; Secondary 47B1, 47A3. 2 M.S. MOSLEHIAN AND H. NAJAFI f(λa+(1 λb λf(a+(1 λf(b for all λ [,1], then f is said to be operator convex; f(a+b f(a+f(b, then f is called subadditive. If f is an operator monotone function on [,, then f can be represented as f(t = f(+βt+ λt λ+t dµ(λ, where β and µ is a positive measure on [, and if f is an operator convex function on [,, then f can be represented as f(t = f(+βt+γt + λt λ+t dµ(λ, where γ, β = f + ( = lim t f(t f( + and µ is a positive measure on [, ; t see [5, Chapter V]. If f is a non-negative operator monotone function on [,, then the subadditivity of f does not hold in general. Aujla and Bourin [] showed that if A,B are matrices and f : [, [, is a concave function, i.e. f is convex, then there exist unitaries U,V such that f(a+b Uf(AU +Vf(BV. Regarding the subadditivity property, Ando and Zhan [1] proved that f(a + B f(a+f(b for all non-negative operator monotone functions f, all unitarily invariant norms and all matrices A,B ; see also [3]. Recall that a norm on the algebra of all n n matrices is unitarily invariant if X = UXV for all unitaries U and V and all matrices X. Throughout this paper M(H denotes the set of all (A,B B(H + B(H + for which f(a+b f(a+f(b for all non-negative operator monotone functions f on [,. We shall show that M(H = {(A,B B(H + B(H + AB +BA }. We apply this result to present an operator inequality involving operator monotone functions analogue to that of Hansen [9]. We also give a necessary and sufficient conditionforthecompositionf g ofanoperatorconvexfunctionf on[, andanonnegative operator monotone function g on an interval (a, b to be operator monotone and deduce some operator inequalities.. The results We start this section with one of our main results.
AROUND OPERATOR MONOTONE FUNCTIONS 3 Theorem.1. Let A,B B(H +. Then AB+BA is positive if and onlyif f(a+b f(a+f(b for all non-negative operator monotone functions f on [,. Proof. Suppose that f(a+b f(a+f(b for all non-negative operator monotone functions f on [,. Let λ (,. The function f λ (t = λt λ+t on [,. Hence is operator monotone (A+B(λ+A+B 1 A(λ+A 1 +B(λ+B 1. ( Put X λ = A(A+λ 1 and Y λ = B(B +λ 1. Inequality ( is equivalent to (λ+a+b(a+b (λ+a+bx λ (λ+a+b +(λ+a+by λ (λ+a+b = λ X λ +λax λ +λbx λ +λx λ B +AX λ A+AX λ B +BX λ A+BX λ B +λ Y λ +λby λ +λay λ +λy λ A+BY λ B +BY λ A+AY λ B +AY λ A. Since BY λ = Y λ B = B λy λ and AX λ = X λ A = A λx λ the above inequality is, in turn, equivalent to λ(a+b+a +B +AB +BA λ(a+b+a +B +(AB +BA+BX λ B +AY λ A or AB +BA+BX λ B +AY λ A. (3 Letting λ we get BX λ B +AY λ A, whence AB +BA. Conversely, assume that AB +BA. Since inequality (3 holds for each λ R +, we obtain f λ (A+B f λ (A+f λ (B. Now, if f be a non-negative operator monotone function on [,, then f can be represented on [, by f(t = f(+βt+ f λ (t dµ(λ,
4 M.S. MOSLEHIAN AND H. NAJAFI where β and µ is a positive measure on [,. Since f(, without loss of generality, we can assume that f(t = f λ (tdµ(λ. Therefore f(a+b = = f λ (A+Bdµ(λ (f λ (A+f λ (Bdµ(λ f λ (Adµ(λ+ = f(a+f(b. f λ (Bdµ(λ If A,B B(H + commute, then AB = (A 1/ B 1/. The above theorem therefore shows that f(a+b f(a+f(b for any non-negative operator monotone function f on [,. In particular, for each n N we have f(na nf(a. Corollary.. Let m A M, n B N and f be a non-negative operator monotone function on [,. If (M m(n n 8mn, then f(a+b f(a+f(b. Proof. Use inequality (1. Corollary.3. Let p 1 and f be a non-negative operator monotone function on [,. Then for positive operators A and B with A B it holds that ( ( B f (B p p +A p B p A p f +f. Proof. Assume that S 1 = 1 (Bp +A p and S = 1 (Bp A p. Clearly S 1 and due to f(t = t p is operator monotone [6, Theorem 1.8], S. We have (S 1 S +S S 1 = (S 1 +S (S 1 S = B p A p, since f(t = t p is also operator monotone. Therefore ( ( B f (B p p +A p B p A p = f(s 1 +S f(s 1 +f(s = f +f. Let m M ( + 1m. If m A,B M, then inequality (1 ensures that AB + BA is positive. From this we can introduce an inequality for non-negative operator monotone functions. We should notice that Hansen[9] proved that an operator monotone function f on [, satisfies the inequality C f(ac f(c AC for all
AROUND OPERATOR MONOTONE FUNCTIONS 5 positive operators A and all contractions C, i.e. operators of norm less than or equal to one. Theorem.4. Let f be a non-negative operator monotone function on [,. Let A and A i (1 i n be positive operators with spectra in [λ,(1 + λ] for some λ R +. Then (i For every isometry C B(H, f(c AC C f ( A C. (ii For operators C i (i = 1,,n with n C i C i = I, ( n n ( A f Ci A ic i Ci f C i. ( ( A Proof. (i Put X =, D = (I CC C D, 1 V = and U = A C ( C D. It is easy to see that U and V are unitary operators. So sp(u XU = C sp(v XV = sp(x [λ,(1+ λ], where sp stands for spectrum. Thus ( ( f(c AC C AC = f f(dad+cac DAD +CAC ( U XU +V XV = f f (U X U +f (V X V = U f ( = ( X U +V f ( X V C f ( A C Df ( ( A D +Cf A C, whence f(c AC C f ( A C. (ii Set C = C 1. C n, Ã = A 1 A.... A n
6 M.S. MOSLEHIAN AND H. NAJAFI Thus ( n f Ci A ic i = f( C Ã C C f (Ã C = n ( A Ci f C i. Corollary.5. Let λ R + and w i [λ,(1 + λ] (i = 1,,n. Let f be a non-negative operator monotone function on [, and A i be positive operators such that n A i = I. Then f( n w i A i n f( w i A i. Proof. Put C i = A 1 i in part (ii of Theorem.4. Theorem.6. Let A,B B(H +. Then B A if and only if for each operator convex function f on [, with f + ( it holds that f(b f(a Proof. Let A,B B(H +. Suppose that for each operator convex function f on [, with f + ( we have f(b f(a. Due to f(t = t is operator convex on [, and f +(, we get B A. Next we show the converse. First assume that A and B are invertible positive operators such that B A. Then λa + A 1 λb + B 1. This inequality is equivalent to (λb + B 1 1 (λa + A 1 1 and this is, in turn, equivalent to B (B + λ 1 A (A + λ 1. On the other hand f λ (t = λt λ+t [,, so f λ (B f λ (A. is operator convex on If A and B are positive and (A B,A+B M(H, then for each ǫ let us set A ǫ = A+ǫ and B ǫ = B +ǫ. Then (A ǫ B ǫ,a ǫ +B ǫ M(H. Hence Letting ǫ we get f λ (B f λ (A. f λ (B +ǫ f λ (A+ǫ. Now suppose that f is an operator convex function on [, with f +(. It is known that f can be represented on [, by f(t = f(+βt+γt + f λ (t dµ(λ, (4 where γ, β = f + ( and µ is a positive measure on [, ; see [5, Chapter V]. If f(t = f λ (t dµ(λ,
AROUND OPERATOR MONOTONE FUNCTIONS 7 then due to f λ (B f λ (A for each λ R + we have f(b f(a. Since γ,β and B A the validity of f(b f(a is deduced in the general case when f is given by (4. Remark.7. It follows from the identity (A B(A+B+(A+B(A B = (A B that B A if and only if (A B,A+B M(H. We need the Löwner Theorem for establishing our next main result. Theorem.8. [1, Löwner Theorem] A function g defined on (a,b is operator monotone if and only if it is analytic in (a,b, can analytically be continued to the whole upper half-plane {z C : Im(z > } and represents there an analytic function whose imaginary part is non-negative. Theorem.9. Let g be a non-negative operator monotone function on an interval (a,b. Let g(z = u(z + iv(z be its analytic continuation to the upper half-plane. Then for each operator convex function f on [, with f +(, f g is operator monotone on (a,b if and only if u(z on the upper half-plane. Proof. Assume that u(z. By the Löwner Theorem.8, v(z on the upper halfplane. One then sees that g maps the upper half-plane into the first quadrant of plane. Hence g maps the upper half-plane into itself. Utilizing again the Löwner Theorem we conclude that g isoperatormonotone. Assume that AandB areself-adjoint operators with spectra in (a,b and B A. It follows from (g(a g(b(g(a+g(b+(g(a+ g(b(g(a g(b = (g(a g(b that (g(a g(b,g(a+g(b M(H. Now Theorem.6 implies that for each operator convex function f on [, with f +( the function f g is operator monotone on (a,b. Conversely, assume that there would be a complex number z with Imz > such that u(z <. Because g is operator monotone, v(z. Hence π < Arg(g(z < π. Therefore π < Arg(g (z < π. So that Im g (z <. Using the Löwner Theorem.8, g is not operator monotone on (a,b, which is a contradiction, since f(x = x is operator convex on (,. Remark.1. If a non-negative operator monotone function g on an interval (a, b is not a zero constant function and u(z on the domain of g, then u(z > on this domain. To see this note that:
8 M.S. MOSLEHIAN AND H. NAJAFI (i If for some t (a,b we have g(t =, then there exists R > such that g can be represented as g(t = g (n (t n=1 (t t n! n for all t (t R,t +R [4, p. 63]. Since g is a non-negative monotone function, g(t = for all t t. Hence g (n (t = for all n, so g is zero on the neighborhood (t R,t +R of t. Thus {t : g(t = } is clopen. Hence g is zero on (a,b contradicting the assumption above. Thus g(t > on (a,b. (ii If g is a constant function, then clearly u(z >. (iii If g is not a constant function, then by the open mapping theorem for non-constant analytic functions, u maps the upper half-plane into {z : Imz > & u(z > }. Corollary.11. Let p 1 with f + (. If B A, then and let f be an operator convex function on [, f(b p f(a p. Proof. Since for p 1 the function g(t = tp is non-negative operator monotone and g takes the upper half-plane into the first quarter of plane, by Theorem.9 we get f g is operator monotone on [,. Corollary.1. Let p 1 and f be a non-negative operator monotone function on [,. Then for positive operators A and B with B A, (i B p f(b p A p f(a p ; (ii If f is strictly positive on (, and A,B are invertible, then A p 1 f(a p B p 1 f(b p. Proof. (i Due to f is operator monotone on [,, by [8, Theorem.4], the function g(t = tf(t is operator convex on [,, hence g +( = f(. Corollary.11 then yields B p f(b p A p f(a p. (ii By part (i, h(t = t p f(t p is operator monotone on (,. By [8, Corollary.6], th(t 1 is operator monotone, hence B 1 p f(b p 1 A 1 p f(a p 1. Therefore A p 1 f(a p B p 1 f(b p. Acknowledgment. The authors would like to sincerely thank the anonymous referee for useful comments and suggestions.
