arxiv:math/051130v1 [math.fa] 1 Nov 005 STABILITY OF GENERALIZED JENSEN EQUATION ON RESTRICTED DOMAINS S.-M. JUNG, M. S. MOSLEHIAN, AND P. K. SAHOO Abstract. In this paper, we establish the conditional Hyers-Ulam-Rassias stability of the generalized Jensen functional equation r f = sgx+ r thy on various restricted domains such as inside balls, outside balls, and punctured spaces. In addition, we prove the orthogonal stability of this equation and study orthogonally generalized Jensen mappings on Balls in inner product spaces. 1. Introduction It is known that the problem of stability of functional equations originated from the following question of Ulam [1] posed in 1940: Given an approximately linear mapping f, when does a linear mapping T estimating f exist? In the next year, Hyers [5] gave a partial affirmative answer to the question of Ulam in the context of Banach spaces. In 1978, Rassias [16] extended the theorem of Hyers by considering the unbounded Cauchy difference fx+y fx fy ε x p + y p, ε > 0, p [0,1. The result of Rassias has provided a lot of influence in the development of what we now call Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of functional equations. In 199, a generalization of Rassias theorem, the so-called generalized Hyers Ulam Rassias stability, was obtained by Găvruta [4]. During the last decades several stability problems of functional equations have been investigated in the spirit of Hyers Ulam Rassias-Găvruta. The reader is referred to [3, 6, 8, 1, 17] and references therein for more detailed information on stability of functional equations. The generalized Jensen equation is rf r = sfx + tfy where f is a mapping between linear spaces and r, s, t are given constant positive integers. It is easy to see that a mapping f : X Y between linear spaces with f0 = 0 satisfies the generalized Jensen equation for all x,y X if and only if it is additive; cf. [1] see also Theorem 6 of [15] in the case of Jensen s equation. Stability of generalized Jensen equation has been studied at first by Kominek [10]andthen byseveralothermathematicians; cf. [, 7,11]. Inthis paper, usingthe direct method, we establish the Hyers Ulam Rassias stability of the generalized Jensen functional equation of Pexider type and the conditional stability on some 000 Mathematics Subject Classification. 2 S.-M. JUNG, M. S. MOSLEHIAN, AND P. K. SAHOO certain restricted domains. Throughout the paper, X denotes a linear space and Y represents a Banach space. In addition, we assume r,s,t to be constant positive integers.. Stability of generalized Jensen equation The following theorem is a simple generalization of Theorem.1 of [1]. It can also be regarded as an extension of the main theorem of [9]. Theorem.1. Let f,g,h : X Y be mappings with f0 = g0 = h0 = 0 for which there exists a function ϕ : X X [0, satisfying and ϕx,y := 1 r.1 n=0 1 [ n ϕ nr s x,nr t y +ϕ nr s x,0 +ϕ 0, nr ] t y <, rf sgx thy r ϕx,y, for all x,y X. Then there exists a unique additive map T : X Y such that fx Tx ϕx,x gx Tx 1 s ϕx,0+ r s ϕ s r x, s r x, hx Tx 1 t ϕ0,x+ r t ϕ t r x, t r x, Furthermore, if the mapping µ fµx is continuous for each fixed x X, then the additive map T is R-linear. Proof. Setting y = 0 in.1 we get rf r x. sgx ϕx,0 Setting x = 0 in.1 we obtain t thy rf r y ϕ0,y for all y X. Then rf r s y t rf r x rf r rf sgx thy r + rf r x sgx + t thy rf r y ϕx,y+ϕx,0+ϕ0,y
STABILITY OF GENERALIZED JENSEN EQUATION ON RESTRICTED DOMAINS 3 for all x,y X. Replacing x and y by r s x and r ty, respectively, we have fx+y fx fy 1 [ r ϕ r s x, r r t y +ϕ s x,0 +ϕ 0, r ] t y. By the well-known theorem of Găvruta [4] there exists a unique additive mapping T : X Y given by Tx := lim n n f n x such that.3 fx Tx ϕx,x Since T is additive, we have Tαx = αtx for all rational numbers α and x X. It follows from. and.3 that gx Tx gx r s + s f r x r s s f r x Tx 1 s ϕx,0+ r s s ϕ r x, s r x In a similar way we obtain the following inequality hx Tx 1 t ϕ0,x+ r t ϕ s r x, s r x If the mapping µ fµx is continuous for each fixed x X, then the linearity of the mapping T can be deduced by the same reasoning as in the proof of the main theorem of [16]. Corollary.. Suppose f : X Y is a mapping with f0 = 0, and there exist constants ε,δ 0 and p [0,1 such that rf sfx tfy r ε+δ x p + y p, for all x,y X. Then there exists a unique additive mapping T : X Y such that fx Tx 3 r ε+ 1 [ r p r p ] δ x p + r s t 1 p 1 Proof. Define ϕx,y = ε+δ x p + y p, and apply Theorem Asymptotic Behavior of Generalized Jensen Equation We start this section with investigating the stability of generalized Jensen equation outside a ball. The results in this section are generalizations of Theorem 3.3 and Corollary 3.4 of [7]. Theorem 3.1. Let d > 0, ε > 0, and f : X Y be a mapping with f0 = 0 such that rf sfx tfy r ε,

If x = y = 0, we choose a z X with z = d, otherwise 1+ d x x if x y z := 1+ d y y if x y. Then one can easily verify the following inequalities: + t z + t s s y + s t x 1+ s z t d, x + z d, 1+ t z s + y d, 1+ t z s + s t x 1+ s z t d, + t z + t s s y + z d. It follows that rf sfx tfy r rf sf + t z + ts r s y + sx+tz rf sfx tfz r + s+tz +ty rf sf 1+ t z tfy r s + sx+tz rf +sf 1+ t s z +tf r s t x 1+ s t + s+tz +ty rf +sf + t z + ts r s y +tfz 5ε. s tf t x 1+ s z t z Hence rf sfx tfy r 5ε
STABILITY OF GENERALIZED JENSEN EQUATION ON RESTRICTED DOMAINS 5 holds for all x,y X. Using Corollary. with δ = 0, we conclude the existence of a unique additive mapping T : X Y such that fx Tx 15 r ε, Now we are ready to study the asymptotic behavior of generalized Jensen equation. Corollary 3.. Let f : X Y be a mapping with f0 = 0. Then f is additive if and only if 3.1 rf sfx tfy r 0 as x + y. Proof. Let 3.1 be satisfied. Then there is a sequence {δ n } monotonically decreasing to zero such that rf 3. sfx tfy r δ n, for all x,y X with x + y n. Applying 3. and Theorem 3.1 we obtain a sequence {T n } of unique additive mappings from X into Y such that fx T n x 15 r δ n, The uniqueness of T n implies that T n = T n+j for all j N. Hence by lettingntendto weinferthatf isadditive. Thereversestatementisobvious. 4. Stability on the Punctured Space In this section we prove the stability of Jensen equation of Pexider type on the deleted space X 0 := X \{0}. In particular, in the case of s = t = r, we obtain some results on stability of the Pexiderized Cauchy equation restricted to the punctured space. Proposition 4.1. Let f,g,h : X Y be mappings with f0 = g0 = h0 = 0 for which there exists a function ϕ : X 0 X 0 [0, satisfying ϕx,y := 3 3 [ϕ n n+1 3n x, + 3 y 1 3 n+1 ϕ 3n+1 x, y n= n+1 ϕ 3n+1 x, y n + ϕ x, 3n y 1 ] 3 n ϕ 3n x, y < and 4.1 rf sgx thy r ϕ x, t s y
6 S.-M. JUNG, M. S. MOSLEHIAN, AND P. K. SAHOO for all x,y X 0. If h is an odd mapping, then there exists a unique additive mapping A : X Y such that fx Ax 1 r ϕ r s x, r s x, and gx Ax 1 s ϕx,x+ 1 s ϕx, x+ 1 s ϕx,x hx Ax 1 t t ϕ s x, t s x + 1 t t ϕ t x, s s x Proof. Replacing y by s ty in 4.1 we get s rf sgx th r x+y t y ϕx,y + 1 t t ϕ t x, s s x for all x,y X. Define the mappings F,G,H by Fx := rf s r x,gx := sgx and Hx := th s t y. Then 4. Replacing x by x 4.4 x x G H x and y by, respectively, in 4. we obtain ϕ x, x for all x X 0. It follows from 4.3 and 4.4 that x x Fx H ϕ, x x +ϕ, x 4.5 and 4.6 x x Fx G ϕ, x x +ϕ, x for all x X 0. Replacing x by 3x 3x 4.7 Fx G x and y by, respectively, in 4. we have x +H ϕ 3x, x
STABILITY OF GENERALIZED JENSEN EQUATION ON RESTRICTED DOMAINS 7 for all x X 0. Using 4.5, 4.6 and 4.7 we infer that Fx 1 3 F3x = 3 Fx 1 F3x+ 1 Fx 3x x 3 Fx G +H + 3x 3 G + 1 x 3 Fx H 3x 3 ϕ, x + 1 3x 3 ϕ, 3x ϕ x, x ϕ x, x + 1 3x 3 ϕ, 3x := ψx for all x X 0. Using 4.8 and the induction, one can prove that 1 F3x 4.9 Fx 1 n 1 3 n F 3n x 3 k ψ 3 k x k=0 for all n and all x X 0, and also 1 3 n F 3n x 1 n 1 3 m F 3m x 3 k ψ 3 k x for all m < n and all x X 0. Since Y is complete we deduce that the sequence { 1 3 n F3 n x } is convergent. Therefore we can define the mapping T : X Y by 4.10 Tx := lim n It follows from 4.9 and 4.10 that 4.11 rf r x 1 3 nf 3n x = lim n k=m r 3 n 3 n f s r x. Tx = Fx Tx ϕx,x and so 4.1 fx 1 r r T s x 1 r r ϕ s x, r s x Note that T0 = 0. Using 4., 4.5 and 4.6 we have x+y F Fx Fy x ϕ, x x +ϕ, x x +ϕ, y y +ϕ, y y +ϕ, y

Letting n and noting to the fact that the right hand side tends to zero, we conclude that T satisfies the Jensen equation and so it is additive. By a known strategy one can easily establish the uniqueness of T; cf. [13]. It follows from 4.1 that Using4.6 and 4.11, we obtain sgx Tx = Gx Tx fx 1 s Tx 1 r ϕ r s x, r s x Gx 1 Fx + 1 Fx 1 Tx 1 ϕx,x + 1 ϕx, x+ 1 ϕx,x, and so gx 1 s Tx 1 s ϕx,x+ 1 s ϕx, x+ 1 s ϕx,x Similarly by applying 4.11 and 4.5 we have th t x Tx = Hx Tx 1 ϕx,x+ 1 ϕx, x+ 1 ϕx,x, and so hx 1 s Tx 1 t t ϕ s x, t s x + 1 t t ϕ t x, s s x With Ax := 1 stx, we conclude that our assertions are true. + 1 t t ϕ t x, s s x Proposition 4.. Let f,g,h : X Y be mappings with f0 = g0 = h0 = 0 for which there exists a function ϕ : X 0 X 0 [0, such that rf sgx thy r ϕ x, t 4.13 s y for all x,y X 0. 9 STABILITY OF GENERALIZED JENSEN EQUATION ON RESTRICTED DOMAINS 9 Proof. Replacing y by s ty in 4.13 we get s rf sgx th r x+y t y ϕx,y for all x,y X. Define the mappings F,G,H by Fx := rf s r x,gx := sgx and Hx := th s t y. Then 4.14 Fx+y Gx Hy ϕx,y for all x,y X 0. Replacing both x and y by x in 4.14 we get x x x 4.15 Fx G H ϕ, x for all x X 0. Replacing x by x 4.16 G x +H x and y by x, respectively, in 4.14 we obtain ϕ x, x for all x X 0. It follows from 4.15 and 4.16 that Fx G x x + G x x rf r x = Fx H +H x ϕ, x x +ϕ, x, and so In addition fx 1 rx r ϕ s, rx + 1 rx s r ϕ s, rx. s gx t s h s t x = 1 s Gx+Hx 1 s ϕx, x Theorem 4.3. Let ε > 0 and let f : X Y be a mapping with f0 = 0 satisfying 4.17 rf sfx tfy r ε for all x,y X 0. Then there exists a unique additive mapping A : X Y such that { 3ε fx Ax min r, 5ε s, 5ε } + ε t r Proof. Replacing x,y by x, sy t in 4.17, respectively, we get rf r x y sf x tf s 4.18 t y ǫ for all x,y X 0. Using the odd and even parts f o,f e of f and 4.17 and 4.18 we obtain rfo sf o x tf o y r ǫ
10 S.-M. JUNG, M. S. MOSLEHIAN, AND P. K. SAHOO and rfe sf e x tf e y r ǫ for all x X 0. Then Propositions 4.1 and 4. give us a unique additive mapping A such that { 3ε f o x Ax min r, 5ε s, 5ε } t and f e x ǫ r Hence { 3ε fx Ax f 0 Ax + f e min r, 5ε s, 5ε t 5. Stability on Orthogonality Spaces } + ǫ r Let us recall the orthogonality in the sense of Rätz; cf. [19]. Suppose X is a real vector space with dimx and is a binary relation on X with the following properties: O1 x 0,0 x for all x X; O if x,y X {0},x y, then x,y are linearly independent; O3 if x,y X,x y, then αx βy for all α,β R; O4 if P is a -dimensional subspace of X,x P and λ R +, then there exists y 0 P such that x y 0 and x+y 0 λx y 0. The pair X, is called an orthogonalityspace. By an orthogonalitynormed space we mean an orthogonality space having a normed structure. Some interesting examples are as follows. i The trivial orthogonality on a vector space X defined by O1, and for nonzero elements x,y X, x y if and only if x,y are linearly independent. ii The ordinary orthogonality on an inner product space X,.,. given by x y if and only if x,y = 0. iii The Birkhoff James orthogonality on a normed space X,. defined by x y if and only if x+λy x for all λ R. Let X be avectorspacean orthogonalityspace and Y,+ be an abelian group. Then a mapping f : X Y is called i orthogonally additive if it satisfies the additive functional equation for all x,y X with x y; ii orthogonally quadratic if it satisfies the quadratic functional equation fx + y+fx y = fx+fy for all x,y X with x y; iii orthogonally generalized Jensen if it satisfies the generalized Jensen functional equation for all x,y X with x y.
STABILITY OF GENERALIZED JENSEN EQUATION ON RESTRICTED DOMAINS 11 In [13, 14] the orthogonal stability of various functional equations were established. In particular, the following theorem was proved; cf. Theorem 1 of [13]. Theorem 5.1. Suppose X, is an orthogonality space and Y,. is a real Banach space. Let f,g,h : X Y be mappings fulfilling fx+y gx hy ǫ for some ǫ and for all x,y X with x y. Then there exists exactly a quadratic mapping Q : X Y and an additive mapping T : X Y such that fx f0 Qx Tx 68 3 ǫ, gx g0 Qx Tx 80 3 ǫ, hx h0 Qx Tx 80 3 ǫ Now we are ready to provide another result on orthogonal stability of functional equations. Theorem 5.. Suppose that f,g,h : X Y is a mapping with f0 = g0 = h0 = 0 satisfying rf sgx thy r ǫ for all x,y X with x y. Then there exist a unique additive mapping T : X Y and a unique quadratic mapping Q : X Y such that fx Tx Qx 68ǫ, gx Tx Qx 80ǫ, hx Tx Qx 80ǫ Proof. Using the same argument as in the proof of Theorem.1 we conclude that fx+y gx hx 3ǫ. Then the result is followed from Theorem Orthogonally generalized Jensen mappings on Balls in Inner Product Spaces Sikorska showed that if f is an orthogonally additive mapping on an open ball B of a real inner product space X into a real sequentially complete linear topological space Y then there exist additive mappings T : X Y and b : R + Y such that fx = Tx + b x for all x B; cf. Corollary 1 of [0]. By an orthogonally generalized Jensen mapping we mean a mapping f : X Y such that rf r sfx tfy ǫ holds for some ǫ > 0 and for all x,y X
1 S.-M. JUNG, M. S. MOSLEHIAN, AND P. K. SAHOO with x y. We can extend Sikorska s result to the orthogonally generalized Jensen mappings as follows. Theorem 6.1. If B is an open ball of a real inner product space X, Y is a real sequentially complete linear topological space, and f : B Y is orthogonally generalized Jensen with f0 = 0, then there exist additive mappings T : X Y and b : R + Y such that fx = Tx+b x for all x B. Proof. With y = 0, we have sx+t0 rf = sfx+tf0 = sfx, r and therefore f r s x = r s fx. Similarly fr t x = r tfx. Hence r r rfx+y = sf s x +tf t y = rfx+rfy and so fx + y = fx + fy for all x,y B with x y. This implies that f is orthogonally additive on B. Now the assertion follows from the Sikorska s result. If we are restricted to the punctured ball B \ {0} then by following the same strategy as in Lemma 1 of [0] we obtain the following result in the case that s = t > 1 r. The situation in the general case left as a question. Theorem 6.. If B is an open ball of a real inner product space X of dimension greater than 1, Y is a real sequentially complete linear topological space, and f : B\{0} Y is orthogonally generalized Jensen map with parameters s = t > 1 r, then there exist additive mappings T : X Y and b : R + Y such that fx = Tx+b x for all x B\{0}. Proof. First note that if f is a generalized Jensen map with parameters t = s r, then fλx+y = λfx+λfy for some λ 1 and all x,y B\{0} such that x y. Step I- the case that f is odd: Let x B \ {0}. There exists y 0 B \ {0} such that x y 0, x+y 0 x y 0. Since x+y0 λ, x y0 λ, x λ, y0 λ B, we have x+y0 x y0 fx = fx λf λf λ λ x+y0 x +λf λ f λ λ λ y0 f λ x y0 x +λf λ f λ λ λ y0 f λ x x +λ f λ = λ f λ. It follows that 6.1 fx = λ f λ 1 x
STABILITY OF GENERALIZED JENSEN EQUATION ON RESTRICTED DOMAINS 13 for all x B\{0}. Since λ n+m f λ n m x = λ n f λ n x for all x B\{0}, and all m,n N with λ n x B\{0}, we can well define the mapping T : X Y by Tx := λ n fλ n x where n is an integer such that λ n x B \ {0}. Clearly, T is an extension of f to X. The mapping T is an odd orthogonally additive mapping. To see this, let x,y X with x y. Then there exists a positive integer n such that λ n x, λ n y, λ n x+ y, λ n x y B\{0}, and by using 6.1 we obtain Tx+Ty = λ n fλ n x+λ n fλ n y = λ n+1 fλ n 1 x+λ n+1 fλ n 1 y = λ n+1 fλ n 1 x+y = λ n fλ n x+y = Tx+y. Hence Tx+Ty = Tx+y for all x,y X. By Corollary 7 of [19], T is additive and f = T B\{0}. Step II- the case that f is even: Using the same notation and the same reasoning as step I, one can show that fx = fy 0 and the mapping Q : X Y defined by Qx := 4λ n fλ n x is even orthogonally additive. By Corollaries 7 and 10 of [19], Q is quadratic and there exists an additive mapping b : R + Y such that Qx = b x for all x B. In addition, f = Q B\{0} Step III- the general case: If f is an arbitrary mapping, then f can be expressed as f = f o +f e where f o and f e are the odd and even parts of f, respectively. Now the result can be deduced from Steps I and II. References [1] D.-H. Boo, S.-Q. Oh, C.-G. Park and J.-M.
