RASSIAS Communicated by A. Gilányi Abstract. We prove uniqueness theorems concerning the functional inequalities in connection with an n-dimensional cubic-quadratic-additive equation m c i f a i +a i + +a in n = 0 i= by applying the direct method.. Introduction Let V and W be real vector spaces. For a given mapping f : V W,wedefine Af,y := f + y f f y, Qf,y := f + y+ f y f f y, Cf,y := f + y 3 f + y f y+3f 6 f y for all,y V. A mapping f : V W is called an additive mapping, a quadratic mapping, or a cubic mapping provided f satisfies the functional equation Af, y = 0forall,y V, Qf,y =0forall,y V,orCf,y =0forall,y V, respectively. We note that the mappings g,h,k : R R given by g =a, h = a,andk =a 3 are solutions of Ag,y =0, Qh,y =0, and Ck,y =0, respectively. A mapping f : V W is called a cubic-quadratic-additive mapping if and only if f is represented by the sum of an additive mapping, a quadratic mapping, and a cubic mapping. A functional equation is called a cubic-quadratic-additive functional equation provided that each of its solutions is a cubic-quadratic-additive mapping and every cubic-quadratic-additivemapping is also a solution of that equation. The mapping f : R R given by f =a 3 + b + c is a solution of the cubic-quadratic-additive functional equation. For the study of functional inequalities concerning the cubic-quadratic-additive equations and a broad variety of other types of functional inequalities, the reader is referred to [,, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 0,,, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8]. 2 44 Y.-H. L EE, S.-M.JUNG AND M. TH. RASSIAS Throughout this paper, let V and W be real vector spaces, X a real normed space, Y a real Banach space, and let N 0 denote the set of all nonnegative integers. For a given mapping f : V W,wedefine Df : V n W by Df,,..., n := m i= c i f a i + a i + + a in n. for all,,..., n V,wherem is a positive integer and c i,a ij are real constants. In this paper, we prove uniqueness theorems that can be easily applied to the investigation of functional inequalities concerning a large class of functional equations of the form Df,,..., n =0, which includes the cubic-quadratic-additive functional equation as a special case. This theorem is particularly useful for proving the Hyers-Ulam stability of a variety of functional equations.. Preliminaries For a given mapping f : V W, we use the following abbreviations: f o f o := f f, f e := := a3 f o f o a a 3 a f + f,, f o := af o f o a a 3 a for all V. We will now introduce a lemma that was proved in [4, Corollary ]. LEMMA.. Let k > be a real constant, let φ : V \{0} [0, be a function satisfying either Φ := k i φki <. for all V \{0} or Φ := k 3i φ k i <. for all V \{0}, and let f : V Y be an arbitrarily given mapping. If there eists a mapping F : V Y satisfying for all V \{0} and f F Φ.3 F o k=kf o, F e k=k F e, F o k=k 3 F o.4 for all V, then F is a unique mapping satisfying.3 and.4.

3 UNIQUENESS THEOREMS ON FUNCTIONAL INEQUALITIES 45 We introduce lemmas that were proved in [4, Corollary 3]. LEMMA.. Let k > be a real number, let φ,ψ : V \{0} [0, be functions satisfying each of the following conditions k i ψ k i <, k i φ k i <, Φ := k i φ k i <, Ψ := k i ψ k i < for all V \{0}, and let f : V Y be an arbitrarily given mapping. If there eists a mapping F : V Y satisfying the inequality f F Φ+ Ψ.5 for all V \{0} and the conditions in.4 for all V, then F is a unique mapping satisfying the conditions.4 for all V and the inequality.5 for all V \{0}. LEMMA.3. Let k > be a real number, let φ,ψ : V \{0} [0, be functions satisfying each of the following conditions k i ψ k i <, k 3i φ k i <, Φ := k i φ k i <, Ψ := k 3i ψ k i < for all V \{0}, and let f : V Y be an arbitrarily given mapping. If there eists a mapping F : V Y satisfying the inequality f F Φ+ Ψ.6 for all V \{0} and the conditions in.4 for all V, then F is a unique mapping satisfying the conditions.4 for all V and the inequality.6 for all V \{0}. 3.
