Accepted 17 Auust, 2010 In this study, visibility of objects on the road is tested usin imae processin techniques over the photo of an illuminated road. Visibility level standard of the international commission on illumination was used was for this test. Throuh software developed for this purpose, a correlation was established between the qualitative values of pixels and photometric units over the road photo usin imae processin techniques. Thanks to the correlation found, it has become possible to calculate lare values of the road and the critical object over the road. Moreover, required parameters for the visibility level are entered into the developed software, makin it possible to calculate the visibility of the critical object over the road. Key words: Road lihtin, luminance, visibility level, imae processin. INTRODUCTION The role of external lihtin can be subdivided in three main purposes; to allow drivers of any kind of vehicles to proceed safely, to allow pedestrians to see hazards and to reconize the environment and other pedestrians around them, improvin their sense of security; to improve the niht-time appearance of the environment (Fiorentin and Scroccaro, 2009). It is known that lihtin desins depend upon both averae luminance level and luminance uniformity which cause excessive lihtin in some cases. It is also accepted that visual conditions miht be inadequate even at luminance levels hiher than the recommended values based on luminance concept for niht-time road lihtin conditions (Guler and Onayil, 2003a). Therefore, a different criterion is needed to provide efficient and safe road lihtin conditions. In recent recommendations on road lihtin, the visibility factor has been proposed as a criterion (ANSI/IESNA RP-8, 2000; CIE, 1995). For calculatin the visibility level, initially a critical object must be chosen. The critical size corresponds rouhly to the least clearance between the road surface and the body structures of normal cars. The object size *Correspondin author. serkan@tef.sdu.edu.tr. Tel: Fax: was selected as cm, which is the minimum size of an object which may pose a daner to a normal size vehicle. The reflection factor of the critical object was taken as 25% (Guler and Onayil, 2003a). Accordin to Adrian s visibility equations, visibility level of the critical object which is on the road surface defined by Adrian (1989). V = / (1) actual threshold where, V: Visibility level, actual : the luminance difference between the taret and its backround for the real road conditions, threshold : The luminance difference needed for minimal visibility, between a taret of certain anular size and its backround (Guler and Onayil, 2003a). Accordin to the studies hitherto, the visibility level should be hiher than 7 (seven) in order to et sufficient visual conditions (Adrian, 1987, 1993, 1995; ecocq, 1997; Dijon and Maldaue, 1998). However, since it is related with contrast directly, the visibility level can reach to a hih value by decreasin uniformity ratios on the road. For the driver comfort and safety, decreasin of uniformity ratios on the road is an unacceptable condition (Guler and Onayil, 2003a). This study establishes a correlation between the road

Essays and photometrical values of the critical objects on the road obtained usin measurement tools over the photo usin imae processin techniques with the qualitative values of the pixels. This correlation makes it possible to calculate the lare of the road and the critical object over the road. Then, also in consideration of the lare values and other factors influencin visibility, the visibility of the critical object is calculated in the software. Also, thanks to the developed software, it has become possible to calculate the visibility of traffic sins, lines, barriers, physical deformations over the road, which affect the traffic. MATERIAS AND METHODS Visibility level calculation parameters The visibility level, V, quantises the observer s ability to see an object more or less easily. It is linked with various parameters related to the object and the observer. The parameter in relation to the object is the contrast,, between the taret and its backround. The parameters related to the observers are more complicated, as they include the observer s visual clarity, the luminance level, the time of observation and the anular dimension that the object subtends (Bacelar et al., 1999). The actual luminance difference between the taret and its backround can be calculated from (Guler and Onayil, 2003a). actual = f (2) b Where, f: The taret luminance (cd/m 2 ), b: the backround luminance (cd/m 2 ). Fcp is a correction factor that has to be used in the even of neative contrast between the object and the backround. Its values depend upon the backround lare and the anular size of the object. Since the eye permeability reduces by time, lare difference threshold increases as the driver s ae oes up (Semiz, 2006). 23 < Ae < 64 for ae factor: (Ae 19) 2 AF = (6) 64 < Ae < 75 for ae factor (Ae 56.6) 2 AF = (7) The coefficient 2.6 was used to adapt these experimental results with those results when the object is seen at a 100% probability (Adrian, 1987). If visibility level values take a positive value the object has a positive contrast and a neative value if it has a neative contrast. Therefore, absolute values should be considered when comparin visibility level values with each other (Semiz, 2006). Workin principle of the system A computer proram was developed usin Adrian s visibility equations for calculatin the visibility level of an object on the road (Guler and Onayil, 2003b). Workin principle of the system is iven in Fiure 1. The developed software enables the testin of the visibility of the photoraphed critical object usin imae processin techniques. The dimension of the critical object used in this system is cm. The reflection coefficient of the critical object measured by a refractometer is The voltae of the lamps used in road illumination is 250 W, with the luminous flux bein 33, 000 lumen. The luminous intensity curves of road luminaire are iven in Fiure 2. The lare of the photoraphed critical object usin imae processin techniques can be calculated thanks to the developed software. To measure the lare of the road and the object over the road, the road and the object are photoraphed from various points and illumination level values are measured by a luxmeter. A correlation was found between the measured illumination level values and the qualitative values of pixels over the photo are iven in Fiure 3. Utilizin this correlation, it becomes possible to calculate the illumination level of the road and the object. The reflection coefficient and thus the lare chanes dependin on the material by which the road is made. To learn the reflection coefficient of the road to be measured and analyzed, reflection coefficients of various points over the road are measured usin a refractometer and the obtained values are entered into the reflection coefficient section in the developed software menu after the averae reflection coefficient of the road is taken. The followin formula is used to calculate the lare of the road and object with known illumination level and reflection coefficient. = q E8) (5)

These variables need to be entered into the developed software. Proram interface is iven in Fiure 4. Visibility of the critical object is tested over the road in Fiure 5. The road has M2 standards by international standards. Averae reflection coefficient of the critical object and the road is measured usin a refractometer. The road s averae reflection coefficient is measured as 0.13 and the critical object s reflection coefficient is measured as The effect of the ae factor and the anular size of the object over the visibility level of the critical object are studied usin the developed software. The effect of observer s ae over the visibility level is shown in Table 1 and Fiure 6. RESUTS AND DISCUSSION Road illumination desin calculations are created durin the project stae of the system. After the road illumination is done, the road illumination miht not ive the required photometric conditions for reasons like environmental conditions, time-dependent deformation, wear, dust formation and faulty assembly. Photometric conditions failin to be in the desired levels affect the visibility of the objects over the road. In recent years, visibility level is bein used to measure the visibility of objects over the roads. The developed project allows the calculation of the visibility level of an object with a known reflection coefficient. It becomes possible to measure how much the traffic sins and deformations that prevent the road traffic affect the traffic. With the software developed in this study, visibility of critical objects is tested accordin to the visibility level

The study also focuses on the effects of factors like lare, ae and the anular size of the object influencin visibility on the visibility level. Table 2 and Fiure 7 show the effect of the anular size of the object over the visibility level. Conclusions Visibility level measurements were prepared for physioloical vision conditions. When the software was prepared,

7 Uncu and Kayakus 2785 eye malfunctions and color blindness was not taken into consideration. These malfunctions affect vision conditions. In this case, the visibility factor also chanes. Especially, preparation of special simulation conditions for color blindness and reconsideration of their abilities to see objects, it may be possible to emphasize advantaes and disadvantaes with respect to siht level of color blindness. If the standards prepared for artificial lihtin conditions are adapted to the system, not only the visibility level of critical object illuminated by road lihtin, but also critical objects illuminated by all lihtin conditions will be tested.
