β-strength studies of very neutronrich nuclei at DESPEC Jose L. Tain Instituto de Física Corpuscular, C.S.I.C - Univ. Valencia for the BELEN, DTAS and MONSTER Collaborations β-decay strength distributions Importance for nuclear structure and astrophysics First β-delayed neutron measurements Future total absorption gamma-ray spectroscopy measurements NUSTAR Meeting GSI-Darmstadt, Feb. 29 Mar. 2, 2012

The β-decay probability distribution is very sensitive to nuclear structure MD. Jordan, PhD Thesis, U. Valencia 101 Nb 105 Mo 102 Tc 104 Tc 105 Tc 106 Tc 107 Tc

Beta decay of neutron rich nuclei n γ Far enough from the stability, β-delayed neutron emission becomes de dominant decay process β-delayed neutron emission probability P n [%] At FAIR both γ-ray spectroscopy and neutron spectroscopy will be required to study the β-strength stability r-process Moeller et al., PRC67(03)055802

The (inverse of the) half-life T 1/2 is a weighted average of the β-strength S β 1 T 1 2 Q β ( Ex ) f ( Q Ex ) dex = Sβ β 0 The neutron emission probability P n measures the fraction of β-strength above the neutron separation energy S n P n = T 1/2 Q β S n ( ) S β ( E x ) f Q β E x Γ n Γ n + Γ γ de x S n Q β For n-rich nuclei very far from stability T 1/2 and P n provide (the only) access to nuclear structure information

(L. Batist, unpublished) At DESPEC one or more of the following instruments will be used to study β-strength distributions: Total Absorption γ- Ray Spectrometer: DTAS 4π Neutron Counter: BELEN Neutron Time of Flight Spectrometer: MONSTER DTAS provides data free of systematic errors BELEN provides P n MONSTER provides the E n and the strength above S n

Rapid neutron capture astrophysical process T 1/2 and P n values are required for r-process calculations: speed of the process final abundance distribution For most of the nuclei involved T 1/2 and P n have to be obtained from β- strength theoretical calculations

N=126 The region close the r-process 3 rd peak: r-process calculations beyond the 3 rd peak Actinide production and U/ Th cosmo-chronometers Contribution to Pb/Bi: s- process termination path P n [%] Moeller et al., PRC67(03)055802

First-forbidden transitions play a dominant role in this region In general FF far-of-stability produce a shortening of half-lives: Moeller, PRC67(2003) T 1/2 FF 198 Ir 208 Ir 202 Au 210 Au P n GT Borzov, PAN74(2011)1435 SM Considerable differences between calculations N=126 Suzuki, PRC85(2012)015802
