1 A study of the influene of the mobility on the phase transitions of the synhronous SIR model Roberto da Silva 1, Henrique A. We showed that, by applying time-dependent Monte Carlo (MC) simulations at ritiality, and taking into aount the optimization of the power law for the density of infeted individuals, the ritial immunization neessary to blok the epidemi in two-dimensional latties dereases as dilution inreases with a logarithmi dependene. On the other hand, the mobility minimizes suh effets and the ritial immunizations is greater when the probability of movement of the individuals inreases. INTRODUCTION The study of ritial phenomena in epidemi models defined on latties has an important hole in the ontext of Statistial Mehanis 1 3. However, suh approahis relatively reent sine the mathematial modelling of an epidemi proess was introdued via differential equations 4. The advantages of the first approah in relation to differential equations framework are the possibility of studying flutuations, whereas it takes into aount orrelations, and lustering effets. In this ontext, the non-equilibrium phase transitions of systems that possess absorbing states have been vastly studied, as an be seeing in the literature (see, for example, Refs. 2,3 ), and an be didatially separated in two kinds: with and without immunization. Epidemi models without immunization belong generially to the Direted Perolation (DP) universality lass. In this ase, the finite size saling near ritiality an be desribed by the following general saling relation: i(t) t β/ν f( t 1/ν,L d t d/z,d 0 t β/ν +θ ) where i(t) = 1 L d L d j=1 σ j is the density of infeted individuals in a d dimensional lattie at the time t and means the average on different evolutions of the system. The individuals σ j are arranged on the sites j of the lattie (where j = 1,,L d, and L is the linear size of the lattie) and an be in two different states, infeted (or ative) and suseptible (or inative). When the individual is infeted, one onsiders σ j = 1 and otherwise σ j = 0. The exponents β, ν, and ν are stati ritial exponents, while z = ν /ν and θ are the dynami ones. Here, = p p denotes the distane of a point p to the ritial point, p, whih governs the algebrai behaviors of the two independent orrelation lengths: the spatial one whih behaves as ξ ν and temporal one, ξ ν. Basially, ξ must be thought of as the average over many independent realizations of the luster diameter while ξ is the same average of the required time to reah the absorbing state.
2 Representing this universality lass, we an onsider, for example, the suseptible-infeted-suseptible (SIS) model whih orresponds to the Domany-Kinzel ellular automata when onsidering the synhronous update and to the ontat proess when one takes into aount the asynhronous update. The SIS model represents diseases for whih the infetion does not onfer immunity, i.e., the individual return to the suseptible lass after reovering from the infetion. For this model, we expet a rossover between two power-law behaviors when starting the simulation with a small density of infeted sites, i(t = 0) = i 0 0, at ritiality ( = 0): t θ if t < t 0 i(t) = t β/ν z elsewhere where the rossover time depends on t 0 i (1/β/ν +θ) 0. This ritial initial slip is very similar to the behavior of magneti systems when they are quenhed from a high temperature to the ritial one 5. Suh behaviors an be studied from MC simulations. The first one (when t < t 0 ) is obtained by putting only one infeted individual in the enter of the lattie and all other sites are oupied by suseptible ones (i 0 = 1/L d ). The seond behavior an be obtained by making i 0 = 1 (representing a fully infeted lattie). However, in models with immunization, the initial ondition i 0 = 1 does not reprodue the seond power law. Atually, in this ase, an exponential relaxation is expeted. In addition to the SIS model, a range of other models an be studied in order to represent a desired epidemi. For instane, one an onsider the suseptible-infeted (SI) model to study the human immunodefiieny virus (HIV) whereas there is no reovery. However, when the disease is suh that the individual an reover and be immune to the disease, at least for some time, one must onsider a new lass of reovered individuals, R. If, after reovering from the disease, the individual beomes immune to reinfetion, the epidemi an be studied through the suseptible-infetedreovered (SIR) model. Nevertheless, if the individual an be reinfeted with the disease after some time, one an onsider the SIRS model. In addition, there are other models whih demand other lasses suh as exposed (E), hidden (H), and maternally-derived immunity (M), in order to represent infetious diseases. The first studies about lattie-based models for epidemi growth is due to Grassberger 1, who onsidered a simple ellular automata to show that exists a ritial ontamination value suh that, below this point, no infinite epidemi is possible, i.e., the epidemi does not perolate. In his pioneering work about epidemi model with immunization, Grassberger 1 raised important questions about epidemi proess, and one of them, in partiular, aught our attention:... A somewhat more subtle question is whether one an allow also for mobility of individuals.... Unfortunately, no work has explored the phase transitions and the preservation of some saling relations for epidemi models with immunization despite this exellent tip. In this work, we elaborate a detailed study of the influene of the mobility of individuals on the phase transitions of the SIR model. For that, we separate our main ontributions in three parts as follows: 1. Elaboration of a refinement proedure to determine the ritial parameters via time-dependent Monte Carlo 2
3 3 Simulations for models with absorbing states; 2. The influene of dilution on the finite size saling behavior of the synhronous SIR and the dependene of the ritial parameters on the density of individuals in the lattie; 3. How the mobility an affet the parameters at the transition point, more preisely the ritial immunization probability ()? Our work is divided in setions as follows: In the next setion, we present the SIR model implemented as ellular automata and show how to add the dilution and mobility in this model. Moreover, we show how to adapt a refinement proedure, developed in Ref. 6 (when studying spin systems in the ontext oftime dependent MC simulations), in order to determine the ritial parameters of models with absorbing states. In Se. III we present our main results. Finally, a brief disussion of the results as well as some onlusions of our findings are presented in Se. IV. II. SIR MODEL WITH DILUTION AND MOBILITY AND TIME-DEPENDENT SIMULATIONS The suseptible-infeted-reovered (SIR) model 4 is a paradigmati model in the theory of epidemis, and an be onsidered as a good and simple model to mimi some infetious diseases inluding measles, mumps, and rubella. Defining S(t) as the number of suseptible individuals at time t in a population, I(t) the number of infeted ones, and R(t) the number of reovered (immune) ones, a deterministi (mean-field) approah of the traditional SIR model onsiders the following set of differential equations: ds dt di dt dr dt = βi(t)s(t) = βs(t)i(t) γ I(t) = γi(t), where β is the ontat rate whih takes into aount the probability of getting the disease in a ontat between a suseptible and an infeted subjet, and γ is simply the reovering rate of infeted individuals. This originally nonlinear problem was proposed by Kermak and MaKendrik and no generi analyti solution is known. Naturally, we an note that d dt (S +I +R) = 0 whih means that N = S +I +R is a onstant of the problem: the total number of individuals. More preisely, this version of the SIR model does not suppose vital dynamis, i.e., an epidemi where a single epidemi outbreak moves faster than the normal birth/death rates. In order to take into aount the orrelation and luster effets in an epidemi spreading, Grassberger 1 onsidered a synhronous probabilisti (ellular automaton) version of the epidemi model on a regular lattie. A partiular and interesting version of the synhronous SIR model is obtained when the rates β and γ are given by the probabilities b, the infetion probability, and, the reovered one. In addition, in this partiular version b+ = 1 as it should. In this version, eah site an be in the following states: oupied by a suseptible, an infeted or an immune individual. The stohasti dynami is governed by the following rules: The infetion an ours when a suseptible
4 4 individual, whih oupy a given site of the square lattie, has at least one neighbor oupied by an infeted individual. This proess ours with probability b/4 times the number of infeted individuals in its neighborhood. The reovering proess ours spontaneously with probability when the site is oupied by an infeted individual. Reently, Arashiro and Tome 7 have proposed a version of the SIR model as a partiular ase of the prey-predator model implemented as ellular automata. In that work, they showed that when keeping the immunization rate () plus infetion rate (b) exatly equal to 1 and onsidering every site of the lattie oupied with a suseptible, infeted or reovered individual, a transition between the ative and inative phases ours for = This is the ritial value of the infetion probability, where ours the transition from a phase where the density of reovered individuals, r(t), is equal to 1 (meaning that b is high enough suh that the whole population, after ontaminated, beome reovered) to a phase where r(t) = 0 (whereas b, in this ase, is low enough suh that only few individuals, or even no one of them, beome reovered). The authors performed several independent runs of a lattie ompletely filled with suseptible individuals exept by one infeted site at the enter of the lattie and the system evolved aording to the synhronous update. After a reasonable number of steps, any one of the infinitely many absorbing states an be reahed and onsequently, the number of immune individuals at the steady state varies from run to run. The simulation is finished when the system enters in an absorbing state. Then, the number of reovered individuals is alulated. The mean value of this quantity, divided by the total number of individuals, is the density of immune individuals at the steady state, r(t), as presented above. Although this model has been onsidered for the ase where the density of individuals is ρ = 1, i.e., no vaanies are presented in the lattie, in many real appliations some sites of the lattie an be empty, affeting therefore the ritial properties of the model. Previous studies in other Statistial Mehanial models (see for example diluted Ising model 8,9 ) show that phase transitions are hanged when ρ 1. By extending the appliations for other diluted latties, Vainstein et al. 10 explored not only the influene of dilution on the ooperation among prisoner dilemma players but also the effets of the mobility of players. Vainstein et al. 10 onsidered the mobility simulated by a simple random walk in the two-dimensional lattie. In their presription, eah player an only jump to its nearest neighbor at random and when there is at least one nearest-neighbor site empty. Thus, this jump ours with probability p. Otherwise, the player remains where it is. For an epidemi proess, it is not different and infetions must be hanged not only by dilution but mainly by mobility! In this paper, we analyse the influene of mobility of individuals on the phase diagrams of the SIR model. For this task, we onsider its synhronous version implemented aording to Ref. 7. On the other hand, the mobility was implemented aording to the presription used in Ref. 10. For the refinement proess of the ritial parameters, we use a method developed in Ref. 6 and vastly explored in our previous ontributions in whih we studied magneti systems To our knowledge, this is the first time that this kind of refinement is applied to a model without a defined Hamiltonian. Basially, we perform time dependent simulations by starting with the system ompletely filled with suseptible
5 individuals but the individual at the enter of the lattie whih is ontaminated with the disease. By onsidering N runs different runs, we alulate the average time of the density of infeted individuals of a square lattie of linear size L through the equation i(t) = 1 N run L L j=1 l=1 m l,j,k(t)δ 1,σl,j,k(t) N L L run k=1 j=1 l=1 m. l,j,k(t) Here, m is 0 when the site (l,j) is empty or 1 when it is oupied by an individual at the time t of the k th run. In addition, σ denotes the state of an individual: suseptible (σ = 0), infeted (σ = 1), or reovered (σ = 2), L is the linear size of the lattie and l = 1,,L (j = 1,,L) stands for the l th line (j th olumn) of the lattie. Sine at ritiality it is expeted that i(t) t θ, the method/algorithm hanges the values of the immunization rate,, aording to a resolution from min up to max in order to find its best value, i.e., the ritial immunization probability,. Then, we alulate the known oeffiient of determination 14 5 α = NMC ) 2 t=t min (ln i a 1 a 2 lnt ) 2 (1) NMC t=t min (ln i ln i(t) for eah value of = min + i, where i = 1,..., ( max min )/ and N MC is the number of MC steps. Here a 1 and a 2 ome from the linear fit of ln i(t) versus lnt, and ln i = (1/(N MC t min +1)) N MC t=t min ln i (t). In addition, t min is the number of disregarded MC steps at the beginning of the simulation. The oeffiient α has a very simple explanation: It measures the ratio (expeted variation)/(total variation). The bigger the α, the better the linear fit in log sale, and therefore, the better the power law whih orresponds to the ritial parameter exepted for an error O( ). III. RESULTS By using the optimization method presented in the previous setion, we determined the ritial immunization probability ( ) for different values of dilution oupation 0 ρ 1 and mobility 0 p 1. For time-dependent simulations, we used t min = 100 MC steps and N MC = 800 MC steps. Let us start with the simplest ase where ρ = 1 whih orresponds to the ritial value = 0.22 obtained by Arashiro and Tomé 7 whereas there is no empty site in the lattie. As shown in Fig. 1 (a), our simulations pointed out for a maximum of α orresponding to = (25) whih orroborates the value from literature. Basially, our refinement proess hanges with a preision = and in addition, the time-dependent simulations are performed with N run = 2400 runs for eah value of. Fig. 1 (b) shows that the model presents a phase transition for = 0.22 orroborating the value found in Fig. 1 (a). This is shown by alulating r, the average of reovered individuals, in the steady state (absorbing state). We onsidered for these simulations N run = 4000 and the maximum number of MC steps N (max) MC = 3000 to ensure that the steady state is reahed for eah value of studied. Suh a result orroborates the result obtained by the refinement proess (Fig. 1 (a)). The optimization desribed by Fig. 1 (a) an be visually observed in Fig. 1 ().

Figure (b): Finite size saling for the density of reovered individuals as funtion of. The phase transition is observed in = Figure (): The searh for a power law behavior of i(t) for different values of around = 0.22 via time-dependent Monte Carlo simulations. The value of whih orresponds to the urve with linear behavior orroborates the value found in Figs. (a) and (b). Sine we observed that the optimization method desribed in Se. II works for the standard ase, we deided to apply this approah to study the phase transitions of the SIR model when there is dilution of the lattie and mobility of the individuals. First of all, it is worth to desribe how the dilution effets an hange the ritial immunization rates. In order to study the dependene of with ρ when p = 0 (stati senarios), we hanged ρ from 1 up to 0.70 by onsidering ρ = We applied the refinement proess and determined the best (orresponding to the highest α) for eah ρ value (a) ln Ative Phase Absorbing Phase (b) FIG. 2: Figure (a): Critial Immunization rate ( ) versus the density of individuals (ρ) for p = 0. We an observe a linear dependene on lnρ. Figure (b): Illustration of one ase of the refinement proess for p = 0 and ρ = 0.7. Fig. 2 (a) shows the behavior of as funtion of lnρ. We observed a logarithm law for p = 0 where = a+blnρ, with a = (5) and b = 0.434(2) whih produes a very good fit: α = The plot (b) of Fig. 2 shows the optimization urve (α ) for the more diluted ase (ρ = 0.7). Sine we have already studied the ase p = 0 (without mobility), now we turned our attention to the mobility of the individuals in the lattie. By using the same proedure for eah value of ρ, we performed simulations in order to obtain the ritial immunization as funtion of p. Firstly,
7 7 we an observe in Fig. 3 (a) the phase diagram for the ase where ρ = 0.85 and p = (a) = 0.85 p = (b) <r> L = 10 L = 20 L = 30 L = 60 L = 120 L = < i(t) > = = = = = t(mc steps) 400 FIG. 3: Figure (a): Phase diagram for ρ = 0.85 and p = 0.3. Figure (b): Illustration of the time-dependent simulations for ρ = 0.85 and p = 0.3. The phase transition ours for = (25) whih is orroborated by time-dependent simulations as an be observed in the plot (b) of Fig. 3. Aording to our previous study, when p = 0, and for the same value of ρ (ρ = 085), we obtained = (25). Hene, it suggests that the ritial immunization rates must depend of p for fixed values of ρ. We explore suh a dependene as an be seen in Fig Mobility FIG. 4: Study of mobility effets on the ritial immunization rates. Good fits with power funtions (ρ) = γ(ρ)p β(ρ) are observed. In this figure, we an see that inreases as p inreases. For ρ fixed, was empirially fitted by a power funtion

The values γ(ρ) and β(ρ) are reported in Table I. So, we an assert that ritial immunizations inreases as p inreases. However, for ρ 1, never is greater than 0.22 whih orresponds to ρ = 1, even for maximum mobility (p = 1). IV. SUMMARIES AND CONCLUSIONS Based on two-dimensional SIR model with synhronous update, we performed (by following a suggestion of the seminal paper of Grassberger 1 ) a detailed study of dilution and mobility effets on the ritial immunizations, i.e., values of the reovering probability for whih the epidemi transits from a not ontrolled regime (where all individuals are ontaminated at sometime) to a ontrolled regime (few individuals or none at all get sik). We used a method to refine the ritial parameters based on the optimization of the power law for the density of infeted individuals along the time at ritiality. Our work shows that the dilution of the lattie dereases the immunization based on a log-law. However, this effets is minimized when the individuals have the possibility to move on the lattie. In this ase, for a fixed density of individuals, the greater the mobility, the bigger the immunization rate.
