GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS arxiv: v1 [math.ra] 28 Jul 2017 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN Abstract. We introduce and study a new class of generalized inverses in rings. An element a in a ring R has generalized Hirano inverse if there exists b R such that bab = b,b comm 2 a,a 2 ab R qnil. We rove that the generalized Hirano inverse of an element is its generalized Drazin inverse. An element a R has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if there exists = 2 comm 2 a such that a 2 R qnil. We then comletely determine when a 2 2 matrix over rojectivefree rings has generalized Hirano inverse. Cline s formula and additive roerties for generalized Hirano inverses are thereby obtained. 1. Introduction Let R be an associative ring with an identity. The commutant of a R is defined by comma = {x R xa = ax}. Set R qnil = {a R 1+ax UR for every x comma}. We say a R is quasinilotent if a R qnil. For a Banach algebra A it is well known that see [4, age 251] a A qnil lim n a n 1 n = 0. The double commutant of a R is defined by comm 2 a = {x R xy = yx for all y comma}. An element a in R is said to have generalized Drazin inverse if there exists b R such that b = bab,b comm 2 a,a a 2 b R qnil. The receding b is unique, if such element exists. As usual, it will be denoted by a d, and called the generalized Drazin inverse of a Mathematics Subject Classification. 15A09, 32A65, 16E50. 2 2 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN Generalized Drazin inverse is extensively studied in both matrix theory and Banach algebra see [3, 7, 8, 9] and [10]. The goal of this aer is to introduce and study a new class of generalized inverses in a ring. An element a R has generalized Hirano inverse if there exists b R such that b = bab,b comm 2 a,a 2 ab R qnil. Weshall rove thatthereceding b isunique, ifsuch element exists. It will be denoted by a h, and called the generalized Hirano inverse of a. In Section 2 we rove that the generalized Hirano inverse of an element is its generalized Drazin inverse. An element a R has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if there exists = 2 comm 2 a such that a 2 R qnil. Recall that a commutative ring R is rojective-free rovided that every finitely generated rojective R-module is free. The class of rojective-free rings is very large. It includes local rings, rincile ideal domains, olynomial rings over every rincial ideal domain, etc. In Section 3, we comletely determine when a 2 2 matrix over rojective-free rings has Hirano inverse. Let R be a rojective-free ring. We rove that A M 2 R has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if deta, tra 2 JR; or det 2 A 1+JR,trA 2 2+JR; or deta JR,trA 2 1+JR and x 2 tra 2 x+ det 2 A = 0 is solvable. Let a, b R. Then ab has generalized Drazin inverse if and only if ba has generalized Drazin inverse, and ba d = bab d 2 a. This was known as Cline s formula for generalized Drazin inverses. It lays an imortant role in revealing the relationshi between the generalized Drazin inverse of a sum of two elements and the generalized Drazin inverse of a block triangular matrix of the form. In Section 4, we establish Cline s formula for generalized Hirano inverses. Let R be a ring, and let a,b,c R. If aba = aca, we rove that ac has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if ba has generalized Hirano inverse, and that ba h = bac h 2 a. Finally, we consider additive roerties of such generalized inverses inabanachalgebra. LetAbeaBanachalgebraanda,b A.
GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS 3 If a,b A have generalized Hirano inverses and satisfy a = ab π,b π ba π = b π b,b π a π ba = b π a π ab, werovethata+bhasgeneralizedhiranoinverse. Herea π = 1 aa h and b π = 1 bb h. Throughout the aer, all rings are associative with an identity and all Banach algebras are comlex. We use NR to denote the set of all nilotent elements in R and JR to denote the Jacobson radical of R. χa = detti n A is the characteristic olynomial of n n matrix A. N stands for the set of all natural numbers. 2. Generalized Drazin inverses The goal of this section is to exlore the relations between generalized Drazin inverses and generalized Hirano inverses. We begin with Lemma 2.1. Let R be a ring and a R qnil. If e 2 = e comma, then ae R qnil. Proof. Let x commae. Then xae = aex, and so exea = exae = eaex = aex = aexe, i.e., exe comma. Hence, 1 aexe UR, and so 1 aex UR. This comletes the roof. Theorem 2.2. Let R be a ring and a R. If a has generalized Hirano inverse, then it has generalized Drazin inverse. Proof. Suose that a has generalized Hirano inverse. Then we have x R such that a 2 ax R qnil,x comm 2 a and xax = x. As a comma, we see that ax = xa. Hence, a 2 a 2 x 2 = a 2 axax = a 2 ax R qnil, and so a 2 1 a 2 x 2 = a 2 a 2 x 2 1 a 2 x 2 R qnil, by Lemma 2.1. As 1 a 2 x 2 = 1 ax R is an idemotent and 1 ax comma 2 a 2 x 2, it follows by Lemma 2.1 that aa a 2 x = aa a 2 ax 2 = a 2 1 a 2 x 2 R qnil. By using Lemma 2.1 again, a a 2 x 2 = aa a 2 x1 ax R qnil. Let y comma a 2 x. Then y 2 comma a 2 x 2. Thus, 1 a
4 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN a 2 x 2 y 2 UR. We infer that 1 a a 2 xy1+a a 2 xy UR. Therefore 1 a a 2 xy UR, and so a a 2 x R qnil. As ax = xa and xax = x, we conclude that a has generalized Drazin inverse x. Corollary 2.3. Let R be a ring and a R. Then a has at most one generalized Hirano inverse in R, and if the generalized Hirano inverse of a exists, it is exactly the generalized Drazin inverse of a, i.e., a h = a d. Proof. In view of [8, Theorem 4.2], every element has at most one generalized Drazin inverse, we obtain the result by Theorem 2.1. Lemma 2.4. Let R be a ring and a R. Then the following are equivalent: 1 a has generalized Hirano inverse. 2 There exists b R such that b = ba 2 b,b comm 2 a,a 2 a 2 b R qnil. Proof. = By hyothesis, there exists b R such that bab = b,b comm 2 a,a 2 ab R qnil. As a comma, we see that ab = ba. Hence, a 2 a 2 b 2 = a 2 abab = a 2 ab R qnil,b 2 a 2 b 2 = bab 2 = b 2. Let xa = ax. Then x comma; hence, bx = xb. Thus, b 2 x = xb 2, and so b 2 comm 2 a, as required. = By hyothesis, there exists b R such that Thus, ba 2 b = b,b comm 2 a,a 2 a 2 b R qnil. a 2 aab = a 2 a 2 b R qnil,abaab = aba 2 b = ab. Let xa = ax. Then xb = bx, and so abx = abx = axb = axb = xab. Hence, ab comm 2 a. Accordingly, a R has generalized Hirano inverse. Theorem 2.5. Let R be a ring and a R. Then the following are equivalent:
GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS 5 1 a has generalized Hirano inverse. 2 There exists 2 = comm 2 a such that a 2 R qnil. Proof. 1 2 By Lemma 2.4, there exists b R such that b = ba 2 b,b comm 2 a,a 2 a 2 b R qnil. Set = a 2 b. Then 2 = R. Let xa = ax. Then xb = bx, and so x = xa 2 b = a 2 bx. hence, comm 2 a. Furthermore, a 2 R qnil, as required. 2 1 Since a 2 R qnil, we see that a UR. Set e = 1 and b = a e. Let xa = ax. Then x = x and xa 2 = a 2 x, and so xa 2 +1 = a 2 +1 x. This imlies that xab = abx, i.e., ab comm 2 a. We check that a 2 aab = a 2 a 2 a e = a 2 a 2 +ea e = a 2 R qnil. Clearly, a 2 +e UR, and so abaab = a 3 a e = aa 2 +ea e = aa 2 +e 1 1 e = ab. Therefore a has generalized Hirano inverse ab, as asserted. Corollary 2.6. Let R be a ring and a R. Then the following are equivalent: 1 a has generalized Hirano inverse. 2 There exists b R such that ab = ab 2,b comm 2 a,a 2 ab R qnil. Proof. 1 2 This is obvious. 2 1 Set = ab. If ax = xa, then bx = xb; hence, x = abx = axb = xab = x. Thus, comm 2 a. Since a 2 R qnil, we comlete the roof by Theorem 2.5.
6 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN In light of Theorem 2.5 and [2, Theorem 3.3], we easily rove that every element in a ring R is the sum of a triotent e i.e., e 3 = e and a nilotent that commute if and only if every element in R has generalized Drazin inverse and R qnil = NR. This also gives the link between generalized Drazin inverses and triotents in a ring see [6] Proosition 2.7. Let R be a ring. If a R has generalized Hirano inverse, then there exists a unique idemotent R such that a = a,a 2 R qnil. Proof. In view of Theorem 2.5, there exists an idemotent R such that comm 2 a,a 2 R qnil. Suose that there exists an idemotent q R such that qa = aq,a 2 q R qnil. Let e = 1 and f = 1 q. Then a 2 e,a 2 f UR,ef = fe and a 2 e,a 2 f R qnil. Thus, 1 1 ef = 1 1 ea 2 e 1 a 2 ef = 1 1 ea 2 e 1 a 2 f = 1 ca 2 f, where c = 1 ea 2 e 1. As comm 2 a, we have c comma 2 f. It follows from a 2 f R qnil that 1 ca 2 f UR. Therefore 1 1 ef = 1 1 e 2 f 2 = 1 1 ef 1+1 ef, and so 1+1 ef = 1. This imlies that f = ef. Likewise, e = fe. Accordingly, e = ef = fe = f, and then = 1 e = 1 f = q, hence the result. If R is not only a ring, but a Banach algebra, the converse of recious roosition can be guaranteed. Corollary 2.8. Let A be a Banach algebra and a A. Then the following are equivalent: 1 a has generalized Hirano inverse.
GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS 7 2 There exists an idemotent A such that a = a,a 2 R qnil. Proof. 1 2 This is obvious by Proosition As a 2 A qnil, a 2 +1 UA. Set e = 1 and b = a e. As in the roof of Theorem 2.5, there exists b A such that b = bab,ba = ab,a 2 ab A qnil. Similarly to Theorem 2.1, we see that a a 2 b A qnil. In light of [4, Theorem 7.5.3], a R has generalized Drazin inverse, and so b comm 2 a. This comletes the roof. 3. Matrices over rojective-free rings For any commutative ring R, we note that M 2 R qnil = {A M 2 R A 2 M 2 JR }see [11, Examle 4.3]. The aim of this section is to comletely determine when a 2 2 matrices over rojective-free rings has generalized Hirano inverse. Theorem 3.1. Let R be a rojective-free ring, and let A M 2 R. If A has generalized Hirano inverse, then 1 A 2 M 2 JR; or 2 I 2 A 2 2 M 2 JR; or 3 χa 2 has a root in JR and a root in 1+JR. Proof. By virtue of Theorem 2.5, we may write A 2 = E+W, where E 2 = E,W M 2 R qnil and E comm 2 A. In light of [1, Proosition ], there exists U GL 2 R such that UEU 1 = 0,I 2 or Then A M 2 R qnil,i 2 A 2 M 2 R qnil, or. 0 0 Case 1. A 2 M 2 R qnil. Then A M 2 R qnil, and so A 2 M 2 JR. Case 2. I 2 A 2 M 2 R qnil. Then I 2 A 2 2 M 2 JR. 1 0 Case 3. There exist U GL 2 R such that UEU 1 =. 0 0 Hence, UA 2 U 1 = UEU 1 + UWU 1. It follows from UEU 1
8 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN λ 0 UWU 1 = UWU 1 UEU 1 that UWU 1 = for 0 µ 1+λ 0 some λ,µ JR. Hence, UA 2 U 1 =. Therefore 0 µ χa 2 has a root µ in JR and a root 1 + λ in 1 + JR, as desired. Corollary 3.2. Let A M 2 Z. Then A has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if 1 A 2 = 0, or 2 I 2 A 2 2 = 0, or 3 A 2 = A 4. Proof. = This is clear by Theorem 2.5. = Since JZ = 0, by Theorem 3.1, we have Case 1. A 2 = 0. Case 2. I 2 A 2 2 = 0. Case 3. χa 2 has a root 0 and a root 1. By Cayley-Hamilton Theorem, A 2 A 2 I 2 = 0; hence, A 2 = A 4. In light of Theorem 2.5, A M 2 Z has generalized Hirano inverse. Therefore we comlete the roof. Examle 3.3. Let Z 2 = { m m,n Z,m,n = 1,2 n}, and n 1 2 let A =. Then A M Z 2 has no generalized Hirano inverse. Proof. Clearly, Z 2 is a commutative local ring with JZ 2 = Z 2. Since A 2 =, we see that A ,I 2 A 2 2 M 2 JR. In addition, tra 2 = 29 and deta 2 = 4. Taking σ : Z 2 Q to be the natural ma, and x = x 2 29x+4 Z 2 [x]. Clearly, x = x 2 29x+4 Q[x] is irreducible, and so x 2 29x+ 4 = 0 is not solvable in Z 2. Hence, x 2 tra 2 x+deta 2 = 0 is not solvable in Z 2. In light of Theorem 3.1, A M 2 Z 2 has no generalized Hirano inverse. Theorem 3.4. Let R be a rojective-free ring. Then A M 2 R has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if
GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS 9 1 deta,tra 2 JR; or 2 det 2 A 1+JR,trA 2 2+JR; or 3 deta JR,trA JR, and x 2 tra 2 x + det 2 A = 0 is solvable. Proof. = Case 1. deta,tra 2 JR. By Cayley-Hamilton Theorem, we have A 2 tra 2 A 2 + deta 2 I 2 = 0; hence, A 2 = tra 2 A 2 deta 2 I 2 JM 2 R. Thus, A 4 M 2 JR, and so A 2 M 2 R qnil. Thus, A has generalized Hirano inverse, by Theorem 2.5. Case 2. det 2 A 1 + JR,trA JR. Then tri 2 A 2 = 2 tra 2 JA and deti 2 A 2 = 1 tra 2 +deta 2 JR. As in Case 1, I 2 A 2 M 2 R qnil. In light of Theorem 2.5, A has generalized Hirano inverse. Case 3. deta JR,trA JR and x 2 tra 2 x + a b deta 2 = 0 is solvable. Write A 2 =. Then a + d = c d tra 2 UR. Hence, a or d are invertible. Say a UR. Suose x 2 tra 2 x+deta 2 = 0 is solvable. Say x 2 1 tra 2 x 1 + deta 2 = 0. Set x 2 = tra 2 x 1. Then x 2 2 tra 2 x 2 +deta 2 = 0. As x 1 x 2 = deta 2 JR, we see that x 1 JR,x 2 UR or x 1 UR,x 2 JR. Say x 1 JR,x 2 UR. Then x 2 2 = tr 2 A 2 +x 1 2trA 2 b a x x 1 1+JR. LetU = 1. x 1 a c It follows from detu = atra 2 +x 2 1 2ax 1 deta 2 UR that U GL 2 R. One easily checks that and so U 1 A 2 U = U 1 A 2 U = x1 x2 x1 x2, 0 x1 = + 1 x2 1 x1 If C = c ij comm x2 x 2 = 0. As x 1 x 2 UR, we get c 12 = c 21 = 0. There- 0 fore C 1 = 0 1., then c 12 x 1 x 2 = c 21 x 1 C. This shows that 0 1
10 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN comm 2 x1 x 2. In light of Theorem 2.5, A M 2 R has generalized Hirano inverse. = In view of Theorem 3.1, A 2 M 2 JR; or I 2 A 2 2 M 2 JR; or χa 2 has a root in JR and a root in 1+JR. Case 1. A 2 M 2 JR. Hence, deta,tra 2 JR. Case2. I 2 A 2 2 M 2 JR. ThenI 2 A 2 NM 2 R/JR. In light of [?,???], χi 2 A 2 t 2 mod NR/JR. It follows fromnr/jr=0thatχi 2 A 2 t 2 JR[t]. AsχI 2 A 2 = t 2 tri 2 A 2 t+deti 2 A 2, we have tri 2 A 2,detI 2 A 2 JR. Hence, tra 2 2+JR. Since deti 2 A 2 = 1 tra 2 + det 2 A, we get det 2 A 1+JR, as desired. Case3. χa 2 hasarootαinjrandarootβ in1+jr. Since χa 2 = x 2 tra 2 x+det 2 A, we see that det 2 A = αβ JR, and so deta JR. Moreover, tra 2 = α + β 1 + JR. Therefore we comlete the roof. Corollary 3.5. Let R be a rojective-free ring, and let A M 2 R. If χa 2 = t αt β, where α,β JR 1+JR, then A has generalized Hirano inverse. Proof. Since χa 2 = t αt β, deta 2 = αβ and tra 2 = α+β. Case 1. α,β JR. Then deta,tra 2 JR. Case 2. α,β 1 + JR. Then det 2 A 1 + JR,trA 2 2+JR. Case 3. α JR,β 1+JR. Then deta JR,trA 2 1+JR. Case 4. α 1+JR,β JR. Then deta JR,trA 2 1+JR. Therefore A has generalized Hirano inverse, by Theorem 3.4. Corollary 3.6. Let R be a rojective-free ring. If 1 2 A M 2 R has Hrano inverse if and only if R, then 1 deta,tra 2 JR; or 2 det 2 A 1+JR,trA 2 2+JR; or 3 deta JR,trA 2 1+JR and there exists u UR such that tr 2 A 2 4det 2 A = u 2.
GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS 11 Proof. Suose that deta JR,trA JR. If x 2 tra 2 x+det 2 A = 0 is solvable, then this equation has a root x 1. Set x 2 = tra 2 x 1. Then deta 2 = x 1 tra 2 x 1 = x 1 x 2 JR. Set u = x 1 x 2. Then u UR. Therefore tr 2 A 2 4det 2 A = x 1 + x 2 2 4x 1 x 2 = x 1 x 2 2 = u 2. Conversely, assume that tr 2 A 2 4det 2 A = u 2 for a u UR. Then tra2 +u 2 is a root of x 2 tra 2 x + det 2 A = 0. In light of Theorem 3.4, we comlete the roof. Examle 3.7. Let Z 2 = { m m,n Z,m,n = 1,2 n}, and n 5 6 let A = M Z 2. Then A M 2 Z 2 has generalized Hirano inverse. Proof. Clearly, Z 2 is a commutative local ring with JZ 2 = Z 2. Clearly, A 2 =. Then deta = 64 JZ 2, tra 2 = JZ 2. Thus, deta JZ 2, and that x 2 tra 2 x+det 2 A = 0 has a root 1. Therefore we are done by Theorem Cline s formula In [9, Theorem 2.1], Liao et al. roved Cline s formula for generalized Drazin inverse. Lian and Zeng extended this result and roved that if aba = aca then ac has generalized Drazin inverse if and only if ba has generalized Drazin inverse see [10, Theorem 2.3]. The aim of this section is to generalize Clines formula from generalized Drazin inverses to generalized Hirano inverses. Theorem 4.1. Let R be a ring, and let a,b,c R. If aba = aca, Then ac has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if ba has generalized Hirano inverse. In this case, ba h = bac h 2 a. Proof. Suose that ac has generalized Hirano inverse and ac h = d. Let e = bd 2 a and f commba. Then fe = fbdacd 2 a = fbacacd 4 a = babafcd 4 a = bacafcd 4 a.
12 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN Also we have acacafc = ababafc = afbabac = afbacac = abafcac = acafcac. As d comm 2 ac, we see that acafcd = dacafc. Thus, we conclude that fe = bacafcd 4 a = bd 4 acafca = bd 4 abafca = bd 4 afbaca = bd 4 afbaba = bd 4 ababaf = bd 4 acacaf = bd 2 af = ef. This imlies that e comm 2 ba. We have Let = ac acd 2 then, ebae = bd 2 ababd 2 a = bd 2 ababacd 3 a = bd 2 ac 3 d 3 a = bd 2 a = e. ac = acac acd 2 ac = acac dac = ac 2 acd that is contained in R qnil. Also we have Since ba 2 bae = baba babd 2 a = baba babacd 2 da = baca bacacd 2 da = bac acd 2 a = ba. we deduce that aba = abac acd 2 a = acac acd 2 a = aca, aba = aca. Then by [10, Lemma 2.2], ba R qnil. Hence e is generalized Hirano inverse of ba and as the generalized Hirano inverse is unique we deduce that e = bd 2 a = ba h. Corollary 4.2. Let R be a ring and a,b R. If ab has generalized Hirano inverse, then so has ba, and ba h = bab h 2 a. Proof. This follows directly from Theorem 4.1 as aba = aba. Corollary 4.3. Let R be a ring, and let a,b R. If ab k has generalized Hirano inverse, then so is ba k.
GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS 13 Proof. Let k = 1, then by Corollary 4.2, ab has generalized Hirano inverse if and only if ba has generalized Hirano inverse. Now let k 2, asab k = abab k 1, thenbycorollary4.2, bab k 1 ahas generalized Hirano inverse, so ba k has generalized Hirano inverse. Lemma 4.4. Let A be a Banach algebra, a,b A and ab = ba. 1 If a,b R qnil, then a+b R qnil. 2 If a or b R qnil, then ab R qnil. Proof. Seebb [13, Lemma 2.10 and Lemma 2.11]. Theorem 4.5. Let A be a Banach algebra, and let a,b A. If a,b have generalized Hirano inverses and ab = ba. Then ab has generalized Hirano inverse and ab h = a h b h. Proof. In order to rove that ab h = a h b h, we need to rove a h b h aba h b h = a h b h, a h b h comm 2 ab and ab 2 aba h b h R qnil. As a h aa h = a h and b h bb h = b h, also a can be commuted with a h,b,b h and b can be commuted with a,a h,b h, we have a h b h aba h b h = a h b h. Let e comm 2 ab, then a h b h e = a h eb h = ea h b h, as a h,b h comab. Note that ab 2 aba h b h = a 2 b 2 bb h +b 2 a 2 aa h a 2 aa h b 2 bb h that is in R qnil by Lemma 4.4, which imlies that ab 2 aba h b h R qnil. Corollary 4.6. LetAbe a Banachalgebra. If a Ahas generalized Hirano inverse, then a n has generalized Hirano inverse and a n h = a h n for all n N. Proof. It easily follows from Theorem 4.5 and using induction on n.
14 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN We note that the converse of the revious corollary is not true. Examle 4.7. Let Z 5 = Z/5Z be the ring of integers modulo 5. Then 2 Z 5 has no generalized Hirano inverse. If b is the generalized Hirano inverse of 2, then 2b 2 = b which imlies that b = 0 or b = 2, in both cases 2 2 2b is not quasinilotent, a contradiction. But 2 2 = 1 Z has generalized Hirano inverse Additive roerties In this section, we are concern on additive roerties of generalized Hirano inverses in a Banach algebra. Let R be an idemotent, and let x R. Then we write x = x+x1 +1 x+1 x1, and induce a reresentation given by the matrix x x1 x = 1 x 1 x1 andsowemayregardsuchmatrixasanelementinr. Thefollowing lemma is crucial. Lemma 5.1. Let R be a Banach algebra, let a A and let a c x = 0 b relative to 2 = A. If a A and b 1 A1 have generalized Hirao inverses, then so is x in A. Proof. In view of Corollary 2.3, a and b have generalized Drazin inverses, and that a 2 aa d,b 2 bb d A qnil. Hence, In view of [13, Lemma 2.1], we can find u A1 such that a d u e = 0 b d comm 2 x,e = e 2 x and x x 2 e A qnil. Thus, x 2 xe =, a 2 aa d v 0 b 2 bb d,
GENERALIZED HIRANO INVERSES IN RINGS 15 for some v A. Clearly, va 2 aa d = 0 and v 2 = 0. It follows by [3, Lemma 2.1] that a 2 aa d +v A qnil. Furthermore, b 2 bb d a 2 aa d +v = 0. Byusing [3, Lemma 2.1]again, a 2 aa d + v + b 2 bb d A qnil. Therefore x 2 xe A qnil. Accordingly, x has generalized Hirao inverses, as asserted. Lemma 5.2. Let A be a Banach algebra. Suose that a A qnil and b A has generalized Hirano inverses. If a = ab π,b π ba = b π ab, then a+b has generalized Hirano inverse. Proof. Case 1. b A qnil. Then b π = 1, and so it follows from b π ba = b π ab that ab = ba. In light of Lemma 4.4, a + b A qnil. By using Lemma 4.4 again, a + b 2 A qnil. Therefore a + b has generalized Hirano inverse by Theorem 2.5. Case 2. b A qnil. In view of Theorem 2.1, b has generalized Drazin inverse, and so we have b = b1 0 0 b 2,a = a11 a 1 a 21 a 2 whereb 1 UA,b 2 1 A1 qnil A qnil. Froma = ab π, we see that a 11 = a 21 = 0, and so b1 a a+b = 1. 0 a 2 +b 2 It follows from b π ba = b π ab that a 2 b 2 = b 2 a 2. By Lemma 4.4, a 2 + b 2 A qnil, and then a 2 + b 2 2 A qnil. In light of Theorem 2.5, a 2 +b 2 has generalized Hirano inverse. Since b has generalized Hirano inverse in A, one easily checks that b 1 = b has generalized inverse. According to Lemma 5.1, a + b has generalized Hirano inverse, thus comleting the roof. Theorem 5.3. Let A be a Banach algebra. If a,b A have generalized Hirano inverses and satisfy a = ab π,b π ba π = b π b,b π a π ba = b π a π ab,,
16 MARJAN SHEIBANI ABDOLYOUSEFI AND HUANYIN CHEN then a+b has generalized Hirano inverse and a+b h = b h + b h n+2 aa+b n a π n=0k=0 n=0 b h n+2 aa+b n a h k+2 ba+b k+1 + b h n+2 aa+b n a h b b h aa h n+2 ba+b n. n=0 Proof. Case 1. b A qnil. Then b π = 1, and so we obtain the result by alying Lemma 5.2. Case 2. b A qnil. We have b = b1 0 0 b 2,a = n=0 a11 a 1 a 21 a 2 where b 1 UA,b 2 1 A1 qnil A qnil. It follows from a = ab π that a 11 = a 21 = 0, and so b1 a a+b = 1. 0 a 2 +b 2 Since b π ba π = b π b,b π a π ba = b π a π ab, we see that a π 2 a 2b 2 = a π 2 b 2a 2. Now, it follows that a 2 +b 2 1 A1 has generalized Hirano inverse. As b 1 = b has generalized Hirano inverse, it follows by Lemma 5.1 that a+b has generalized Hirano inverse. According to Corollary 2.2, we see that a+b h = a+b d,a h = a d and b h = b d. Therefore we comlete the roof, by [3, Theorem 2.2]. Corollary 5.4. Let A be a Banach algebra and a,b A. If a,b A have generalized Hirano inverses and satisfy ab = ba,a = ab π,b π = ba π = b π b, then a+b has generalized Hirano inverse and a+b h = b h. Proof. Since a = ab π, we see that ab h = 0. Thus, b h n+2 aa + b n = ab h n+2 a+b n = 0. Therefore the result follows by Theorem 5.3. Corollary 5.5. Let A be a Banach algebra and a,b A. If a,b have generalized Hirano inverses and ab = ba = 0, then a+b has generalized Hirano inverse and a+b h = a h +b h.,
