2 Jefferson Lab Overview One of 17 U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories Single program focus on Nuclear Physics Created to build and operate the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF), world-unique user facility for Nuclear Physics Mission is to gain a deeper understanding of the structure of matter Through advances in fundamental research in nuclear physics Through advances in accelerator science and technology In operation since 1995 Managed for DOE by Jefferson Science Associates, LLC (JSA) 2 Jefferson Lab by the numbers: ~700 employees FY2017 Costs: $162.1M 169 acre site 1,597 Active Users 27 Joint faculty 608 PhDs granted to-date (211 in progress) K-12 programs serve >12,000 students and >940 teachers annually

3 Why We re Here: Nuclear Physics at Jefferson Lab CEBAF is a large microscope to peer inside the atomic nucleus Atom Consists of a nucleus surrounded by electrons Nucleus Contains protons and neutrons; 100,000 times smaller than an atom Protons and Neutrons Three quarks bound by gluons. Our goal is to understand the subatomic constituents of protons and neutrons and the force that holds them together the strongest force in the Universe We re seeking answers to basic questions: Why is no quark ever found alone? What does the interior of a proton look like? How does the force that holds protons and neutrons together arise from the force between quarks? We attack these scientific challenges through experiment, theoretical development and computational science 3

4 Why What We re Doing is Important We power Scientific Discovery: we are the world s center for this type of Nuclear Physics - CEBAF serves the largest nuclear physics user community in the world, 1600 strong We train the future nuclear workforce - 1/3 of U.S. PhDs in Nuclear Physics did their research work at Jefferson Lab - Pipeline for diverse fields: nuclear medicine, nuclear security, national security, industry We develop technology that propels science, medicine and industry forward - Superconducting accelerator technology used across DOE/SC facilities: SNS at ORNL, LCLS-II at SLAC, FRIB at MSU - Computational science drives Exascale Computing - Detector technology saves lives every day in nuclear medicine 4 Dilon Technologies: molecular imaging breast cancer cameras using licensed IP from Jefferson Lab
