We then use smlar deas, adapted to nets of functons, to prove the convergence of corner cuttng algorthms refnng nets of functons, n case the corner cuttng weghts are taken from a strcter class of weghts than n the refnement of ponts. Keywords: Corner cuttng for polygonal lnes; Coons transfnte nterpolaton; Corner cuttng for nets of functons; Convergence; Lpschtz contnuty. Introducton Carl de Boor proved the convergence of corner cuttng algorthms refnng ponts n a very general case []. Convergence of a wde class of corner cuttng algorthms was proved by Gregory and Qu [0]. In ths paper we gve a smple proof of the convergence result n [0]. Our proof s based on the smple but crucal observaton that the polygonal lne Lu [k+], p [k+] ) through the ponts of level k +, u [k+], p [k+] ), Z, s a pecewse lnear nterpolant of Lu [k], p [k] ). Usng an elementary error formula, we show that the sequence of polygonal lnes {Lu [k], p [k] )} k 0 s a Cauchy sequence, n case the corner cuttng weghts are taken from the rather general class of weghts W consdered n [0] and satsfy an asymptotc condton on ther sze. We then adapt the approxmaton dea to show the convergence of corner cuttng algorthms for bvarate nets of functons, when the weghts are taken from W but satsfy a strcter asymptotc condton. Both convergence results for ponts and for nets of functons are proved under a condton on the ntal data. Besdes the theoretcal nterest n these two nce convergence results, corner cuttng algorthms for nets of functons ponts) generate a varety of C 0 bvarate functons C 0 curves) approxmatng the ntal net polygonal lne), wth the corner cuttng weghts actng as shape parameters. In a future work we plan to study the smoothness of the lmts n the case of nets, and to derve condtons on the corner cuttng weghts whch guarantee C lmt functons. Ths was nvestgated n the case of ponts n [2] and n [0]. The structure of the paper s as follows. In Secton 2 we gve our proof of the convergence of corner cuttng algorthms refnng ponts polygonal lnes). In Secton 3 we consder the case of bvarate nets of functons. Frst, n Subsecton 3. we gve prelmnary results on Coons patches see [6]) and ther approxmaton propertes snce they are analogous to lnear nterpolants n the case of ponts. Then, n Subsecton 3.2 we ntroduce the noton of bvarate nets of functons and present the corner cuttng algorthms for them. The convergence theorem and ts proof are gven n Subsecton 3.3. 2 2. Corner cuttng algorthms for ponts n R n Corner cuttng algorthms for ponts are teratve methods that startng from a gven sequence of ponts p [0] = {p [0], Z} produce at each teraton denser and denser sequences of ponts p [k], k > 0. Whenever convergent, they allow the user to defne a contnuous curve that approxmates the shape descrbed by the gven polylne. Convergence of corner cuttng algorthms can be brefly defned as follows. Defnton 2.. A corner cuttng algorthm s sad to be convergent f, for any ntal sequence p [0] = {p [0], Z}, there exsts a functon F p [0] CR) such that lm sup F p [0]2 k ) p [k] k + = 0. Z In ths secton we nvestgate the convergence of unvarate corner cuttng schemes assumng the corner cuttng weghts to satsfy the same assumptons as Gregory and Qu [0]. Defnton 2.2 Corner cuttng weghts). Let lz) be the set of scalar valued sequences ndexed by Z. We denote by W a subset of lz) lz) of the form { } W := α, β) lz) lz) : nf {α, β, β α } > 0. 2.) Z Moreover, for γ := α, β) W we defne µγ) := sup {β α, β + α }. 2.2) Z Now let l n Z) denote the set of vector valued sequences ndexed by Z and let P = {P R n, Z} l n Z). In the followng we defne the corner cuttng operator for an arbtrary sequence P of ponts n R n. Defnton 2.3 Corner cuttng operator). The corner cuttng operator wth corner cuttng weghts γ := α, β) W, denoted by CCγ, maps l n Z) nto l n Z). For P l n Z) CC γp) ) 2 = α )P + α P +, CC γp) ) 2+ = β )P + β P ) Remark 2.4. The corner cuttng operator gven n Defnton 2.3 s the same as the one studed n [0]. A more general corner cuttng operator s consdered n []. The condton requred n 2.) on the corner cuttng weghts follows from the observaton that α = Q 2 P 2 P + P 2, β = P + Q 2+ 2 P + P 2, β α = Q 2+ Q 2 2 P + P 2, where Q 2 = CCγP) ) 2, Q 2+ = CCγP) ) 2+. Denotng by P [0] l n Z) a sequence of ponts n R n and assumng that, for each k 0, a par of scalar valued sequences γ [k] := α [k], β [k] ) W s assgned, we can formulate the corner cuttng algorthm, for short the CCγalgorthm, as follows. Algorthm 2.5. Corner cuttng algorthm for ponts: Input: P [0] l n Z) For k = 0,,..., Input: γ [k] W Compute P [k+] = CCγ [k]p[k] ) accordng to 2.3) 2
3 P + β : β α : Q 2+ α : Q 2 P Fgure : One applcaton of the CCγ-operator on a sequence of ponts n l 2 Z). Here Q 2 = CCγP) ) 2 and Q 2+ = CCγP) ) 2+. In the remander of ths secton we want to gve a new smple proof of the fact that, for all choces of {γ [k] W, k 0} satsfyng sup k 0 µγ [k] ) <, and for all sequences of ponts n R n wth bounded L dstance between every two consecutve ponts, the corner cuttng algorthm always converges. To ths end we present two techncal lemmas, where the frst one s taken from [5, Lemma 8] and s here recalled for completeness. Lemma 2.6. Let f be a unvarate functon defned on [a, b]. If f s Lpschtz contnuous wth Lpschtz constant L, then the error n approxmatng f by the lnear nterpolatng polynomal at the ponts a, b, s bounded by Proof. It s well known that La, b; f a), f b))x) = x a b a f b) + b x b a f a), f x) La, b; f a), f b))x) b a)l, x [a, b]. 2 f x) La, b; f a), f b))x) = x a)x b)[a, b, x] f 2.4) wth [a, b, x] f the dvded dfference of order 2 of f at the ponts a, b, x. By defnton of dvded dfferences we get ) x a)x b) f b) f x) f x) f a) f x) La, b; f a), f b))x) = x a)x b)[a, b, x] f =. 2.5) b a b x x a Snce x a)x b) b a b a 4, and f s Lpschtz contnuous, then 2.5) yelds f x) La, b; f a), f b))x) b a) 4 L b x b x + ) L x a = x a b a)l. 2 The next lemma s about pecewse Lpschtz contnuous functons. Lemma 2.7. Let f be a Lpschtz contnuous functon on each nterval of a partton < x < x + < of the real lne R = Z [x, x + ), wth a bound L on the Lpschtz constants. Then f s Lpschtz contnuous n R wth Lpschtz constant L. Proof. Let t, t 2 R, t < t 2. If t, t 2 belong to the same nterval of the partton, say t, t 2 [x, x + ), the nequalty f t 2 ) f t ) L t 2 t holds by assumpton. Otherwse, assumng t [x, x + ), t 2 [x, x + ), +, and wrtng f t 2 ) f t ) = f t 2 ) f x ) + l=+ 3 f x l+ ) f x l )) + f x + ) f t ) 2.6)
4 we easly arrve at whch concludes the proof. f t 2 ) f t ) L t 2 x + L Theorem 2.8. For {γ [k] } k 0 W such that sup k 0 l=+ x l+ x l + L x + t = L t 2 t, µγ [k] ) <, 2.7) the corner cuttng algorthm Algorthm 2.5) converges for all ntal sequences P [0] = {P [0] R n, Z} l n Z) satsfyng P [0] + P[0] < L, Z, wth L > 0. Proof. We prove convergence of the CCγ-algorthm workng component-wse. Frst we ntroduce a parametrzaton at each refnement level. Wthout loss of generalty, we assume u [0] = Z and, for all k 0, we denote by u [k] the scalar sequence obtaned from u [0] by applyng k steps of the CCγ-algorthm Algorthm 2.5). Precsely, from the k )-th level parameters, the k-th level parameters are obtaned by the rules u [k] 2 = α [k ] )u [k ] + α [k ] u [k ] +, u[k] 2+ = β[k ] )u [k ] + β [k ] u [k ] +. Denotng by p [k] one component of P [k], we construct the pecewse lnear nterpolant to the data u [k], p [k] ) and denote t by Lu [k], p [k] ). In other words Lu [k], p [k] )u) = Lu [k], u [k] + ; p[k], p [k] ), u [u[k], u [k] By the assumpton on P [0], we know that p [0] + p[0] < L for all Z and Lu [0], p [0] ) s Lpschtz contnuous wth constant L on [u [0], u [0] + ] = [, + ]. We show by nducton that, for k 0, Lu[k+], p [k+] ) s Lpschtz contnuous wth constant L on [u [k+], u [k+] + ]. Indeed, all ponts of p[k+] le on Lu [k], p [k] ) and therefore by the choce of u [k+] we know that p [k+] + p [k+] L u [k+] + u [k+]. Hence, by Lemma 2.7, we can conclude that Lu [k], p [k] ) s Lpschtz contnuous n R wth constant L for all k 0. Snce Lu [k+], p [k+] ) s, by constructon, a pecewse lnear nterpolant to Lu [k], p [k] ), we can regard Lu [k+], p [k+] ) as an approxmaton of Lu [k], p [k] ). In partcular, for u [u [k+] 2, u [k+] 2+ ], we have Lu [k+], p [k+] )u) Lu [k], p [k] )u) = 0 see Fgure 2). On the other hand, for u [u [k+] 2, u[k+] 2 ], snce Lu [k], p [k] ) s Lpschtz contnuous wth constant L, we obtan by Lemma 2.6 that + Lu [k+], p [k+] )u) Lu [k], p [k] )u) 2 L u[k+] 2 + ]. u [k+] 2 2 L d[k+], 2.8) where d [k] = sup u [k] + u[k]. Now, we proceed by comparng d [k+] wth d [k]. To ths purpose we have to dstngush between the followng two cases see Fgure 2): Case : Case 2: u [k+] 2+ u[k+] 2 = α [k] u [k+] 2 u [k+] 2 β [k] )u [k] + β [k] = β[k] )u[k] u [k] α [k] )u [k] + = β[k] ) + α[k] u [k] + u[k] ). α [k] )u [k] + u[k] ); Both cases yeld that d [k+] µ [k] d [k] wth µ [k] := µγ [k] ). Thus, n vew of 2.8), we get that Lp [k+], u [k+] )u) Lu [k], p [k] )u) 2 Ld[k+] 2 L d[0] k h=0 µ[h] ). Takng nto account also that k h=0 µ[h] < µ k+ wth µ := sup k 0 µ [k], for any arbtrary m Z + we can wrte Lu [k+m], p [k+m] )u) Lu [k], p [k] )u) m l=0 Lu[k+l+], p [k+l+] )u) Lu [k+l], p [k+l] )u) 2 L d[0] µ k+ m l=0 µl) Ld[0] 2 µ) µk+, from whch we conclude that {Lu [k], p [k] )} k 0 s a Cauchy sequence and therefore convergent. The lmt of ths sequence s the functon F p [0] of Defnton 2. see, e.g., [7]). 4

Remark 2.9. Some mportant observatons: ) The condton that the ntal sequence of ponts P [0] l n Z) s such that P [0] + P[0] < L for all Z, s equvalent to requrng the pecewse lnear nterpolant to the data, P [0] ), Z to be Lpschtz contnuous wth Lpschtz constant L. ) Convergence of the corner cuttng algorthm s not affected f n a fnte number of teratons some or all of the corner cuttng weghts α [k] and β [k] are such that α [k] = 0 or β [k] = 0 or β [k] α [k] = 0. Even more, convergence of the corner cuttng algorthm s guaranteed f n an nfnte number of teratons the corner cuttng weghts satsfy 2.7). ) Convergence of the corner cuttng algorthm can be obtaned under weaker assumptons on α [k] and β [k] than the ones requred n Theorem 2.8, namely by ust requrng that m k+l l=0 h=0 µ[h] < for all m Z Corner cuttng algorthms for nets of functons The am of ths secton s to show convergence of bvarate corner cuttng algorthms refnng nets of functons by sutably extendng the results ntroduced n the prevous secton. 3.. Now, for t τ t + and t +m+ τ 2 t +m+2 Thus, [s, s +l ; τ, τ 2 ]N = s +l s )τ 2 τ ) Ns +l, τ 2 ) + Ns, τ ) Ns +l, τ ) Ns, τ 2 )) = t + τ ) τ 2 τ ) + τ 2 t + ) τ 2 τ ) s +l s )t + τ ) s +l s )τ 2 t + ) Ns+l, t + ) + Ns, τ ) Ns, t + ) Ns +l, τ ) ) Ns+l, τ 2 ) + Ns, t + ) Ns +l, t + ) Ns, τ 2 ) ). [s, s +l ; τ, τ 2 ]N = t + τ ) τ 2 τ ) [s, s +l ; t +, τ ]N + τ 2 t + ) τ 2 τ ) [s, s +l ; t +, τ 2 ]N. The MSDD n the frst term above corresponds to case ), snce τ, t + [t, t + ], and the MSDD n the second term above corresponds to case ) wth m, snce t + [t +, t +2 ] and τ 2 [t ++m, t ++m+ ]. By the frst part of the proof we have [s +l, s ; t +, τ ]N L and by the nducton hypothess we have [s +l, s ; t +, τ 2 ]N L. Thus, [s, s +l ; τ, τ 2 ]N t + τ ) τ 2 τ ) L + τ 2 t + ) τ 2 τ ) L = L, for t τ t +, τ +m+ τ 2 t +m+2, and the nequalty n 3.3) holds n case ) for m +. A smple lemma follows from the lnearty of the dvded dfferences. Lemma 3.6. If N l T), l =,..., m have the BMSDD property wth constant L, then m l= N lt) has the BMSDD property wth constant ml. Usng a smlar nducton to that n the second part of the proof of Lemma 3.5, we can prove Lemma 3.7. A bvarate functon whch has the BMSDD property wth constant L on each rectangle of a grd T has the BMSDD property wth constant L n R 2. The next lemma consders bvarate functons whch are pecewse lnear n one varable. Lemma 3.8. Let F be a bvarate functon of the form Fs, t) = s s Fs +, t) + s + s Fs, t), s [s, s + ], t R, Z, s + s s + s where {s } Z R s an ncreasng sequence. If F satsfes the nequalty n 3.3) for σ, σ 2 [s, s + ] for any Z and τ, τ 2 R, then F has the BMSDD property wth constant L n R 2. 9
10 Proof. Frst we show that F satsfes the nequalty n 3.3) wth constant L n each rectangle of a grd T defned by the parameters {s } Z and any ncreasng sequence {t } Z. Let σ, σ 2 [s, s + ] and τ, τ 2 [t, t + ] for some, Z. Snce [σ, σ 2 ; τ, τ 2 ]F = τ τ 2 ) [σ, σ 2 ]F, τ ) [σ, σ 2 ]F, τ 2 )), the lnearty of F n s mples that and we get [σ, σ 2 ]F, τ ) = Fs+, τ ) Fs, τ ) ), =, 2, s + s ) [σ, σ 2 ; τ, τ 2 ]F = τ τ 2 ) s + s ) Fs +, τ ) + Fs, τ 2 ) Fs +, τ 2 ) Fs, τ )). From the assumpton that F satsfes the nequalty n 3.3) for σ, σ 2 [s, s + ] for any Z and τ, τ 2 R, we conclude that F has the BMSDD property wth constant L on each rectangle of T. Hence, by Lemma 3.7 F has the BMSDD property wth constant L n R 2. Remark 3.9. It s obvous that the same result holds f F s lnear n t n each rectangle of T. Another mportant observaton s Remark The restrcton to a grd of a bvarate functon whch has the BMSDD property wth constant L n R 2 s a net whch has the BMSDD property wth constant L. The next Theorem s our frst key result. Theorem 3.2. If NT) has the BMSDD property wth constant L then CN) has the BMSDD property wth constant 3L. Proof. Defne the bvarate functons related to N smlarly to the bvarate functons related to F n the proof of Proposton 3.5) L s N))s, t) = L t N))s, t) = L s L t N))s, t) = s s s + s Ns +, t) + s + s s + s Ns, t), s [s, s + ], t R, Z t t t + t Ns, t + ) + t + t t + t Ns, t ), s R, t [t, t + ], Z, ) s s t t s + s t + t Ns +, t + ) + t + t t + t Ns +, t ) + s + s s + s t t t + t Ns, t + ) + t + t t + t Ns, t ) ), s [s, s + ], t [t, t + ], Z, Z. Note that L s L t N)) s the pecewse blnear functon on the rectangles of T, nterpolatng the data {s, t ), Ns, t )}, Z. It follows from 3.) and the defnton of CN) that CN) = L s N) + L t N) L s L t N)). 3.6) Next we show that the three functons n the rght-hand sde of the above equaton have the BMSDD property wth constant L n R 2. By Lemma 3.8 and Remark 3.9 both L s N) and L t N) have the BMSDD property wth constant L n each rectangle of T snce by assumpton NT) has the BMSDD property wth constant L. Moreover, also L s L t N)) has the BMSDD property wth constant L n each rectangle of T because for σ, σ 2 [s, s + ] and τ, τ 2 [t, t + ] [σ, σ 2 ; τ, τ 2 ]L s L t N)) = [s, s + ; t, t + ]N. Now, by Lemma 3.7 the three functons have the BMSDD property wth constant L n R 2. Thus Lemma 3.6, n vew of 3.6), mples that CN) has the BMSDD property wth constant 3L n R 2. A drect consequence of Theorem 3.2 and Remark 3.20 s 0
11 Corollary If NT) has the BMSDD property wth constant L, then BCγ [s],γ[t]cn)) defned after Algorthm 3.2) wth γ [s], γ [t] W, has the BMSDD property wth constant 3L. Corollary 3.22 leads to our second key result. Corollary Let {N [k] } k N be the nets generated by Algorthm 3.2 from N [0]. If N [0] has the BMSDD property wth constant L then N [k] has the BMSDD property wth constant 3 k L, for k 0. We are now ready to prove the thrd key result. Theorem In the notaton of Algorthm 3.2, f N [0] has the BMSDD property wth constant L then where h [k+] s CN [k+] ) CN [k] ) 3 k+ L h[k+] s h [k+] t 4 = sup Z s [k+] + s [k+] ), h [k+] t = sup Z t [k+] + t [k+] ). Proof. In vew of Corollary 3.23 and Theorem 3.2, CN [k] ) has the BMSDD property wth constant 3 k+ L, and therefore by Remark 3.20, also N [k+] = CN [k] ) T [k+] has ths property. Regardng CN [k+] ) as the pecewse Coons patch nterpolatng CN [k] ) T [k+], we conclude 3.7) from Corollary 3.7. We are now ready to prove Theorem 3.4. Proof of Theorem 3.4. By the way T [k+] s constructed from T [k] n steps -3 of Algorthm 3.2, we see that h [k+] s µγ [s],[k] )h [k] s and h [k+] t µγ [t],[k] )h [k] t, wth µγ [s],[k] ) and µγ [t],[k] ) defned as n 2.2). Defnng µ = sup k 0 max{µγ [s],[k] ), µγ [t],[k] )} we get from 3.7) CN [k+] ) CN [k] ) 3k+ LH µ ) 2k = 3LH 4 4 3µ ) 2 ) k, wth H = h [0] s h [0] t. Thus, f 3µ ) 2 <, the sequence {CN [k] } k N s a Cauchy sequence and therefore convergent. To conclude, the convergence of Algorthm 3.2 s guaranteed n case 3.7) µ = sup k 0 max{µγ [s],[k] ), µγ [t],[k] )} < 3 3. Remark The condton 3.4) n Theorem 3.4 can be relaxed to 3 k µγ [s],[k] ), µγ [t],[k] ) <. k=0 Acknowledgements. C. Cont and L. Roman acknowledge fnancal support from GNCS-INdAM.
