1 PHYSICS continued Part III (15 credits) Please refer to the Department publication Regents Examination in Physics: Rating Guide f Part III. Teachers should become familiar with this guide befe rating students papers. Scing Criteria f Calculations F each question requiring the student to show all calculations, including the equation and substitution with units, apply the following scing criteria: llow a total of two credits f questions 117, 120, and 125. llow one credit f the equation and substitution of values with units. If the equation and/ substitution with units is not shown, do not allow this credit. llow one credit f the crect answer (number and unit). If the number is given without the unit, do not allow this credit. Penalize a student only once per equation f omitting units. llow full credit even if the answer is not expressed with the crect number of significant figures. 116 llow one credit. 24 m ± 1 m If the number is given without the unit do not allow this credit. 117 llow a total of two credits. Refer to Scing Criteria f Calculations in this scing key. PE = mg h PE = (650 kg)(9.8 m/s 2 )(24 m) PE = 152, 880 kg m 2 /s 2 PE = J llow credit f an answer that is consistent with the student s answer to question llow one credit. To receive this credit, the response must be written in one me complete sentences. The kinetic energy of the car at the top of the second hill is less than the kinetic energy of the car at the top of the third hill. The car s KE is less. 119 llow a total of two credits. llow one credit f three lines drawn from point to point. The lines may consist of one straight line and two curved lines three curved lines. llow one credit f three arrowheads, one on each line pointing in the direction of point. Do not penalize a student f additional electric field lines with arrowheads drawn crectly. Examples of Responses [See the back of the Scing Key f Part I] 120 llow a total of two credits. Refer to Scing Criteria f Calculations in this scing key. F = F = F = 0.21 N kq F = 1 q 2 r 2 F = kq 1 q 2 r 2 9 N m2 ( 2 ) ( C)( C) C 2 (. 050 m) 9 N m2 ( 2 ) ( C) C 2 (. 050 m) F = N Do not penalize a student f using the actual values f the charges and calculating a negative value f the fce.
2 PHYSICS continued Part II llow a total of 20 credits, one credit f each question, f only two of the six groups in this part. If me than two groups are answered, only the first two should be considered. Group 1 Motion in a Plane X X X X4 60 X X X X X X3 Group 3 Electromagnetic pplications 76 1 X X X X X X4 82 X X X X2 3 4 Group 5 Solid State X X X X4 100 X X X X X X2 3 Group 2 Internal Energy X X X X X X X X X X2 3 4 Group 4 Geometric Optics X4 87 X X X X X X X4 94 X X2 3 4 Group 6 Nuclear Energy X X X X X X X X X X
3 FOR TECHERS ONLY P The University of the State of New Yk REGENTS HIGH SCHOOL EXMINTION PHYSICS Wednesday, June 21, :15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., only SCORING KEY Part I Refer to the table on the answer paper f the number of credits to be given on Part I. Part I (65 credits) X X X4 2 X X X3 4 Directions to the teacher: 3 1 X X X X X X X X4 11 X X X X X X X X X X X X X4 28 X X X4 31 X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X X4 52 X X X X2 3 4 Use only red ink red pencil in rating Regents examination papers. Do not crect the student s wk by making insertions changes of any kind. Scan each answer paper to make certain that the student has marked only one answer f each question. If a student has marked two me answers with an X in ink, draw a red line through the row of numbers f that question to indicate that no credit is to be allowed f that question when the answer paper is sced. To facilitate scing, the scing key has been printed in the same fmat as the answer paper. The scing key f Part I and Part II may be made into a scing stencil by punching out the crect answers. e sure that the stencil is aligned with the answer paper so that the holes crespond to the crect answers. To aid in proper alignment, punch out the first and last item numbers in each part and place the stencil on the answer paper so that these item numbers appear through the appropriate holes. 19 X X2 3 4 [OVER] X X4

6 PHYSICS concluded 121 llow one credit. Example of cceptable Response Do not allow this credit if the curve intersects either axis. Do not allow this credit if the sketch is a straight line Example of cceptable Response Maximum Kinetic Energy (x10-19 J) Magnitude of Electrostatic Fce 0 Distance of Separation Maximum Kinetic Energy of Photoelectrons vs. Photon Frequency 124 llow one credit. Example of cceptable Response Hz ± Hz llow credit f an answer that is consistent with the student s answer to question 123, that is, where the student s best-fit line intercepts the hizontal axis ± Hz. 125 llow a total of two credits. Refer to Scing Criteria f Calculations in this scing key. llow credit f an answer that is consistent with the student s graph, unless the student receives no credits f questions 122 and 123. In that case, credit may be awarded if the student crectly calculates the slope using data in the table. Note: The slope may be determined by direct substitution of data points only if the data values are on the best-fit line. These responses are based on the assumption that the best-fit line passes through these codinates. slope = slope = KE max f J J Hz Hz slope = J s slope = J/Hz Frequency (x10 14 Hz) 126 llow one credit. Planck s constant 122 llow one credit. ll points must be plotted accurately (±0.3 grid space). 123 llow one credit. The best-fit line must be straight. If one me points are plotted increctly in question 122, but a best-fit straight line is drawn, allow this credit.
