The corresponding gradient Ricci flow equation turns out to equal the time dependent Hamilton Jacobi equation of the mechanics so defined. 1 Introduction The Ricci flow has provided many far reaching insights into long standing problems in geometry and topology [18, 1]. Perhaps more surprising is the fact that it also has interesting applications in physics, where two important occurrences are conformal gravity [], and the low energy effective action of string theory [8]. Recent works [4, 5, 6, 7] have shed light on applications of the Ricci flow to foundational issues in quantum mechanics. The present contribution is a continuation of previous research [13, 14, 1] on the exciting interrelation between Ricci flow, quantum mechanics and gravity. We can state our results more precisely as follows: Theorem. Let be a smooth, n dimensional, compact manifold without boundary, endowed with a conformally flat Riemannian metric at some initial time t 0 (time is not a coordinate on, but an external parameter). Then a classical mechanical system having as its configuration space can be defined, such that its time independent mechanical action (Hamilton s principal function) equals the conformal factor of the initial metric. oreover, the corresponding gradient Ricci flow equals the time dependent Hamilton Jacobi equation of the mechanical system thus defined. Corollary. On the manifold, the action functional for Einstein Hilbert gravity equals the sum of the action functional for Schroedinger quantum mechanics, plus Perelman s functional, plus the Coulomb functional (see eqns. (35), (36) below). Proofs of the theorem and of the corollary will be given in sections 3 and 4, respectively. As we will see, a key role will be played by the conformal metric we place on the manifold at the initial time t 0. Now, in n = dimensions any metric is conformal, so the requirement of conformality is void in this case. Not so, however, when n >, where a metric need not (and in general will not) be conformal. oreover, even if one starts out with a conformal metric on at time t 0, its time shifted under the Ricci flow need no longer be conformal. Thus the requirement of conformality will apply 1
only at t 0 : conformality of the metric will only be needed as an initial condition for the Ricci flow equation (19). As such, the initial metric is univocally determined by the knowledge of one function, or conformal factor, on the manifold. We will see that the conformal factor plays a central role in identifying the sought for mechanical model. In principle, the result summarised by the above theorem holds for a classical mechanical model. However, quantising the latter will also allow us to work with a quantum mechanical model that is associated, in a canonical way, with the initial conformal metric. Conventions. We follow the notations of [17]. Let a Riemannian metric g ij be given on. In local coordinates x i, i = 1,...,n, the volume element dv on equals dv = g dx 1 dx n =: g d n x, (1) where g := detg ij. Using the Christoffel symbols of the corresponding Levi Civita connection, the Ricci tensor reads Γ m ij = 1 gmh ( i g jh + j g hi h g ij ), () R ik = l Γ l ik k Γ l il + Γ l ikγ m lm Γ m il Γ l km. (3) Given an arbitrary smooth function φ on, the Laplacian φ and the squared gradient ( φ) have the following coordinate expressions: φ := 1 g r ( gg rs s φ), ( φ) := g mn m φ n φ. (4) In n = dimensions, any Riemannian metric is conformally flat; such was the case analysed in ref. [14, 1]. In n 3 dimensions, conformality of the metric is no longer guaranteed. Specifically [1], when n = 3, a necessary and sufficient condition for conformality is the vanishing of the Cotton tensor; when n 4, a necessary and sufficient condition for conformality is the vanishing of the Weyl tensor. In what follows we will assume that the corresponding conformality condition is always satisfied as the initial condition for the Ricci flow equation (19). Then, with respect to the initial metric, admits isothermal coordinates, that we continue to denote by x i and that we will use systematically in what follows. Therefore let the initial metric be g ij (t 0 ) = e f δ ij, (5) where f is a smooth real function on, hereafter referred to as conformal factor. 1 For the Christoffel symbols corresponding to (5) we find, after some elementary algebra, Γ m ij = 1 while the volume element equals 1 Some authors use the term conformal factor for the exponential e f. ( δij m f δ m j if δ m i jf ), (6) dv = e nf/ d n x. (7)
A computation gives the Ricci tensor corresponding to (5), ( n R im = j f j f + 1 ) 4 j j f δ im + n ( i m f + 1 if m f ), (8) and the Ricci scalar R = g im R im : ( ) n R = (n 1)e f j f j f + j j f. (9) 4 oreover, for any smooth function φ we find [( φ = e f 1 n ) ] j f j φ + j j φ, ( φ) = e f ( j φ) ( j φ ). (10) In particular, setting φ = f we arrive at [ ( n ) j j f = e f f + 1 ( f) ], j f j f = e f ( f). (11) Using (11) in (8) and (9) we find and R im = 1 e f fδ im + n ( i m f + 1 ) if m f (1) [ ] n R = (n 1) ( f) + f. (13) 4 Compactness of ensures the convergence of the integrals we will work with, without the need to impose further conditions on the integrands (such as, e.g., fast decay at infinity). The absence of a boundary ensures the possibility of integrating by parts without picking up boundary terms. Perelman s functional We will first present some necessary background material [18, 1]. Perelman s functional on the manifold, denoted F[f, g ij ], is defined as [ ] F[f, g ij ] := ( f) + R dv, (14) where the Ricci scalar R is assumed expressed in terms of the metric g ij. By (7) and (13) we can express F[f, g ij ] entirely as a functional of the conformal factor f: [ ] F[f] := F[f, g ij (f)] = e nf/ a n ( f) + b n f d n x, (15) where the coefficients a n and b n are given by a n = 1 + (n 1)(n ), b n = n 1. (16) 4 3
Despite its nonstandard appearance, the coefficient a n of the kinetic term above is always positive as it should. oreover, when n =, the functional (15) reduces to the corresponding of ref. [14, 1]. The Euler Lagrange extremals of (15) are f n ( f) = 0. (17) A time flow equation (a gradient flow, in the terminology of [1]) can be obtained from (17) if we let f depend on a time variable t and add the corresponding first derivative. Denoting the time dependent conformal factor by f we have f t + n ( f f) = 0. (18) It turns out that Perelman s functional F[f, g ij ] is nondecreasing under the joint action of (18) and of the Ricci flow equation g ij t = R ij, (19) because df dt = e n f/ R ij + i j f d n x 0. (0) This property allows to interpret F as an entropy functional. Does the Ricci flow preserve the conformality of the metric? In order to answer this question we compute the time shifted metric using (19). It suffices to retain first order terms in δt. By (1) we find g ij (t 0 + δt) (1) = ( 1 δt f ) ( g ij (t 0 ) (n )δt i j f + 1 ) if j f + O ( (δt) ). The second term on the right vanishes identically when n =. Hence, in two dimensions, the Ricci flow preserves the conformality of the metric, as was to be expected. In n > this need not be the case. As recalled above, a necessary and sufficient condition that ensures conformality is the vanishing of the corresponding Weyl tensor (or of the Cotton tensor, when n = 3). Alternatively, but equivalently, a necessary and sufficient condition for conformality of the time shifted metric is that the term in (1) multiplying (n ) be proportional to g ij (t 0 ), eventually with a point dependent proportionality factor c(x): i j f + 1 if j f = c(x)g ij (t 0 ) = c(x)e f δ ij. () Here c(x) is a function on, in principle arbitrary. Integrating () one easily sees that there are two solutions. In the first place, any constant f solves () with the choice c(x) = 0 identically. If f is to be nonconstant, then it must equal the function f(x) = ln n ( cj x j ) + d j, (3) j=1 The sign of the time derivative in (18) is not arbitrary, see section 6.4 of ref. [1]. 4
where c j and d j are integration constants. Again (3) satisfies () only with the choice c(x) = 0 identically. Hence the (initially point dependent) proportionality factor c(x) must vanish identically in all cases, if () is to hold true. This implies the vanishing of the second summand on the right hand side of (1): in a sense, this situation is equivalent to the case n =. We conclude that, for an initial conformal factor f other than (3), the Ricci flow does not preserve the conformality of the metric. 3 Proof of the theorem In what follows we regard the manifold as the configuration space of a mechanical system, to be identified presently in terms of the conformal metric. We recall that, for a point particle of mass m subject to a time independent potential U, the Hamilton Jacobi equation for the time dependent action S reads [] S t + 1 ( S) + U = 0. (4) m It is also well known that, separating the time variable as per S = S Et, (5) with S the so called reduced action (also called Hamilton s characteristic function), one obtains 1 m ( S) + U = E. (6) Eqn. (5) suggests separating variables in (18) as per f = f + Et, (7) where the sign of the time variable is reversed 3 with respect to (5). Substituting (7) into (18) leads to n ( f) f = E (8) which, upon using (13), becomes (n 1)( f) R = E. (9) n 1 Comparing (9) with (6) and picking a value of the mass m = 1 (n 1), we conclude that the following identifications can be made: S = f, U = R. (30) n 1 So the potential U is proportional to the scalar Ricci curvature of the configuration space, while the reduced action S equals the conformal factor f. 4 This identifies a mechanical system in terms of the metric, and the theorem is proved. 3 This time reversal is imposed on us by the time flow eqn. (18), with respect to which time is reversed in the mechanical model. As recalled in the previous footnote, the sign preceding the time derivative in (18) is mandatory. This time reversal is just a rewording of (part of) section 6.4 of ref. [1], where a corresponding heat flow is run backwards in time. 4 Eqns. (6) and (9) also allow for the choice f = S. However this choice is ruled out by eqns. (5) and (7), plus the ensuing discussion on the sign of the time variable. 5
4 Proof of the corollary We have so far considered the classical mechanics associated with a given conformal factor, but one can immediately construct the corresponding quantum mechanics, by means of the Schroedinger equation for the potential U. In fact the spectral problem for time independent Schroedinger operators with the Ricci scalar as a potential function has been analysed in [1]. So let us consider the time dependent Schroedinger equation i ψ t = m ψ + Uψ, (31) which reduces to the time dependent Hamilton Jacobi equation (4) upon setting ψ = e i S/ and letting 0 []. We will hereafter use = 1. Now (31) can be obtained as the extremal of the action functional S[ψ, ψ ] := e nf/ ( iψ ψ t 1 m ψ ψ Uψ ψ ) d n x. (3) Substitute ψ = e i f and m = 1/(n 1) above, use eqns. (13) and (30), and finally consider the stationary case t f = 0, where f becomes f. Then (3) becomes [ S[f] = e nf/ n ] ( f) + f d n x. (33) Since the Einstein Hilbert gravitational action functional G on is [17] G[f] := e nf/ R(f)d n x, (34) we find, using eqns. (13), (15), (16) and (3), where C[f] := G[f] = F[f] + S[f] + C[f], (35) [( e nf/ n ) ] 1 ( f) f d n x (36) is the action functional for a free scalar field f coupled to a Coulomb charge placed at infinity [9]. The corollary is proved. 5 Concluding remarks Our result (35) correctly reduces to that found in [14] when n =. Above, the Einstein Hilbert gravitational functional G[f], Schroedinger s action functional S[f] and the Coulomb functional C[f], as well as Perelman s entropy functional F[f], are all dimensionless. Introducing Newton s constant G, Planck s constant and Boltzmann s constant k restores their usual dimensions. Thus, as announced, on a compact, conformally flat Riemannian configuration space without boundary, Einstein Hilbert 6
gravity arises from Schroedinger quantum mechanics, from Perelman s functional for the Ricci flow, and from the Coulomb functional. The equality f = S trivially implies e f = e S, but there are some nontrivialities concealed behind. In Feynman s formulation of quantum mechanics, Feynman s kernel in Euclidean space is given precisely by e S. This appears to suggest some deeper connection between Perelman s approach to the Ricci flow, gravity, and quantum mechanics. Some heuristic arguments indicate that this connection goes beyond what has already been rigorously proved here. We have observed that a metric that is conformal at t 0 generally stops being conformal under the Ricci flow. This does not imply that new degrees of freedom appear in the metric at later times: by (1), g ij (t 0 + δt) just contains the conformal factor f and derivatives thereof. However, the metric g ij (t 0 + δt) can no longer be neatly packaged into the form e f δ ij : somehow it has spread out over its (previously vanishing) nondiagonal entries, also picking up terms in i j f and i f j f all this without developing any additional degrees of freedom, certainly not any that were not already present in g ij (t 0 ), through the conformal factor f. This spreading behaviour is typical for waves, matter waves in our case which are known to be described by quantum mechanics. Altogether this is one more hint of the intriguing connections between Ricci flow, emergent quantum mechanics and gravity, some of which have been analysed in refs. [19, 0, 3, 10, 11, 15, 16].
