On the Solution of Gauss Circle Problem Conjecture Revised arxiv: v [math.gm] 3 Dec 05 Nikolaos D. Bagis Aristotle University of Thessaloniki Thessaloniki, Greece nikosbagis@hotmail.gr Abstract We give a proof of a mean value asymptotic formula for the number of representations of an integer as sum of two squares known as the Gauss circle problem. keywords: Gauss Circle Problem; Conjecture; Proof; Sums of Squares; Asymptotic; Introduction In geometry the number of lattice points lying in the circle x +y = n is say r n. The equivalent of the above proposition in number theory is saying, the number of representations of the integer n as a sum of two squares is r n. Hence evaluating the function r n has both geometrical and number theoretic meaning. Gauss itself prove that lim x x r n =. n x The problem we are describing, firstly began by finding the best possible constant θ > 0 of the asymptotic expansion r n = x+o x θ+ǫ, ǫ > 0, x 3 n x The first result it was that of Gauss which gave a first value θ =. For an analytic geometry proof of this case one can see []. After Gauss many other scientists try to give better estimates with the most recent that of Huxley θ = see [] in 003. Gauss circle problem conjecture states that θ = in 3.
There is a conversion procedure due to Richert that expresses the Gauss circle problem in terms of divisor problem of Dirichlet i.e x = n x dn logx+γ x, where dn = d n The conjecture for the Dirchlet divisor problem is x = O x /+ǫ, ǫ > 0, x 5 A result of Hardy shows that and the complementary result of Ingham or Landau x lim sup x = 6 x/ x lim inf x = 7 x/ From analytic number theory point of view, Jacobi see [,] give a simple evaluationofthefunctionr n. Hedefinedthethetafunctionsee[,8]: ϑq = n Z qn, for q <, then write ϑ q = n,m Z Z q n +m = r nq n But as proved also by Jacobi see details in [] holds the following theorem Theorem.Jacobi If q = e r, r > 0, then n=0 ϑ 3 q = n= q n = K 8 Hence from the equality K = F, ;;k r = + = + m= m= l=0 q m +q m = + m= q m l q ml = l=0 l q l+m 9 the function k r being used here is called elliptic singularmodulus and is defined in terms of Weber s functions see [,8] as kr = 6q +q n 8 +q writing n
the double series 9 under one sum using divisors sums he obtained the next result Theorem.Jacobi For n =,,... we have r n = d odd, d n d 0 and r0 =. However, here we are interested only in the Gauss circle problem relation 3 point of view and not the Dirichlet divisor problem. The Jacobi formula of Theorem as it stands is very comfortable to use it directly. Although it is very important an estimation of r n see Section--Lemma below and finding the desired error term of big O of relation 3, which as we show is r n = x+o x / fx, x 0. n x as long as lim x fx = +. Asymptotic Expansion of n xr n In this section we give an asymptotic formula for the mean value of r n using the next formula which is due to Hardy and Voronoi near 90, see [9,7] r n = x+x / n x r n n J nx where J ν z is the general Bessel function of the first kind and ν-th order and given by J ν z := k=0 If a,b R, then we define k z ν+k, 0 z <, ν C k!γk +ν + M s a,b = N s a,b = k odd, k= k odd, k= k+ k+ cosa+b k k s 3 sina+b k k s 3
and Next we prove Theorem 3. Rx = n x P s a,b = M s a,b n n s, Q s a,b = r n x = x/ P 3/ x, + N s c s+q s+5/, x +O s+ s+ x s+/ s=0 where c m = m m 3 m m!. Proof. From and Theorem we have x r n n J nx = x lim x lim lim x N nm N x lim d odd,d n N s a,b n n s. 5 N s c sp s+3/, x s s+ x s / s= N d c N N x N / 6 r n n J nx = n J nx = m J nm x nm p p odd,np N np J npx 7 The function J x has the following asymptotic expansion as x J x = x [cos x 3 n=0 n c n x n sin x 3 n c n+ x n+ ] 8 n=0 The error due to stopping the summation at any term is the order of magnitude of that term multiplied by /x. Hence, using 8 in 7 we get 6. =
Setting N = in 6, we get Rx = lim np N p odd 05 p+ sin npx+ [ np 9/ x 5/ 5 p+ cos npx+ + 3 p+ sin npx+ 56 np 7/ x 3/ 8np 5/ x where p = l+. p+ xcos npx+ np 3/ ]+O x 3/ Lemma. The Gauss circle problem reduces finding the rate of convergence of Rx = x / n x r n x, which is equivalent to that of Sx = lim lim N nl N l cos nl x+ = nl 3/ r ncos nx+ r ncos nx+ = 9 n 3/ n 3/ If we manage to show that uniformly S M x = M r ncos nx+ <, M, 0 n 3/ i.e. S M x is uniformly convergent to Sx, then the problem is solved. Set D M x := M cos nx+, 0 < δ <, x > 0. n 3/ δ We first prove that r n = on ǫ, for all ǫ > 0. Then proving D M x is Sx uniformly bounded and uniformly convegent, we take the lim x fx = 0, for every f such that lim x fx = +. Lemma. For every ǫ > 0 we have r n = on ǫ, n 5
Proof. Let a = 0,,,3 and d a n = d n,d a. From the known asymptotic formula see [3] exercises in chapter : d ν = o n ν+ǫ, ǫ > 0, n, 3 where ν 0 and we get d n which gives the desired result. r n = d n d 3 n, r n d n + d 3 n 8d 0 n = on ǫ. Also the Euler-Maclaurin formula for a function F having continuous derivatives in the interval a,m states see []: with 0 < ξ <. If we set then easy Also and M Fk = k=a M+ a Ftdt+ FM +a+fa+ + F M +a F a M F a+k +ξ 5 0 F t = k=0 Ft = cos tx+, 0 < δ < t 3/ δ lim M δ 3 M+ a t 3/ δ cos tx+ dt < 5. cos xt+ x sin t 7/ δ F t = O t A, A > xt+ t 5/ δ Hence the Euler-Maclaurin summation formula assures us that we can state the following Lemma 3. For every 0 < δ <, the lim M D M x exists and is say Dx. Lemma.see [] pg.5 Suppose that λ,λ,... is a nondecreasing sequence of real numbers with limit 6
infinity, and c,c,... is an arbitrary sequence of real or complex numbers, and that fx has a continuous derivative for x λ. Put Cx = c n 6 λ n x where the summation is over all n for which λ n x. Then for x λ, λ n x c n fλ n = Cxfx x λ Ctf tdt 7 Lemma 5. For every 0 < δ <, the sums are uniformly convergent to a bounded function of x, as M. Proof. Let the function It s first derivative is ft = cos t a+ 8 t 3/ f t = asin at+ t 3/ 3cos at+ 9 t 5/ Setting y = M we have n y = y = M 30 Also from Lemma with y = M we have f n = fy n y n y n M = n M n M y t f tdt = f n = Mf M M t f tdt Hence f n = cos na+ = Mf n 3/ M M t f tdt = = F C a +F C am +F S a F S am + a + cos a sin a 3 7
wheref C z = z 0 cos t dtandf S z = z 0 sin t dtarethefresnel C,S functions. But function 3 is absolutely bounded when M =,,... and a > 0 by some constant we mean. Note. lim F Cx = lim F Sx = 3 x x Hence for the sum M cos nx+ Gh,x,M := 33 n 3/ h it holds that G0,x,M is bounded when M N and x > 0. Using the meanvalue theorem there exists 0 < ξ < δ such that Gδ,x,M G0,x,M δ = hgh,x,m h=ξ Also if we consider the next function f t = cos t a+ t +ǫ, ǫ > 0. 3 We can show as above that see also Section 3 below f n 35 n M is uniformly bounded and convergent. Hence W = Gδ,x,M δ h Gh,x,M h=ξ + G0,x,M = M cos nx+ = δ logn + G0,x,M. n 3/ ξ Assuming that ξ = δ ǫ > 0, we have M cos nx+ W δ n 3/ logn n ǫ δ + G0,x,M = M cos nx+ logn O δ n /+ǫ n / ǫ δ+ǫ + G0,x,M M cos nx+ logn = O δ + G0,x,M < 36 n /+ǫ uniformly in M and x, when 0 < δ <. n / δ 8
Main Theorem. For every 0 < δ <, the series cos nx+ 37 n 3/ δ are convergent. Further the partial sums M cos nx+ D M x = 38 n 3/ δ are uniformly bounded and for every function fx such that lim x fx = + we have r n = x +o x / fx, as x 39 n x Proof. The partial sums D M x areuniformly bounded for everyx >, M >>, when 0 < δ <. Using [3] Theorem pg. 337, the series in 9 is uniformly convergent, since we can write Sx = r n n δ cos nx+. 0 n 3/ δ The sequence rn n, δ > 0 is uniformly convergent to 0 and the remaining term δ has sum Dx, uniformly convegent and bounded. Hence Sx is uniformly convergent and for every function fx with lim x fx = +, we have Sx lim x fx = lim x r n cos nx+ n δ n 3/ δ fx Note. An exampleofsuchfunction fx is log ν x = loglog...log x..., forfixed }{{} ν times large ν or say x ǫ, with ǫ > 0, etc. 3 Notes and Remarks Actualy there are more that one can say. For example in the case of the sum 35: Dǫ,x,M := cos nx+, where ǫ > 0 n /+ǫ/ n M An evaluation using Lemma in view of the squre root method of the proof of Lemma 5, shows that Dǫ,x,y = +iy ǫ E ǫ i xy = 0 iy ǫ E ǫ i xy + 9
+ +ie ǫ i x + ie ǫi x + y ǫ sin xy + +y ǫ cos xy + y ǫ cos xy sin x + cos x where M = y and E n z = is the exponential integral. Also when x and ǫ > 0 we have fǫ,x := lim y + Dǫ,x,y = e zt dt 3 tn = +ie ǫ i x + ie ǫi x sin x + cos x which is a bounded function for all x. Hence we can write cos nx+ = fǫ,x, ǫ > 0 5 n /+ǫ/ The case ǫ = 0 lead us to D0,x,y bounded but not convergent, when y. Hence M cos nx+ 6 n is bounded when M, but is not convergent, uniformly bounded. That is not such M {sin,cos}nx. For example with x =, we get M cos n+ = sin M +cos M +C 7 n with C = + sin + cos 8 and more generaly = M cos nx+ = n sin xm + x sin x+ x +cos x+ 9 0
