arxiv:593v3 [mathoa] 7 May 26 A short note on Cuntz splice from a viewpoint of continuous orbit equivalence of topological Markov shifts Kengo Matsumoto Department of Mathematics Joetsu University of Education Joetsu, , JAPAN Abstract LetAbeanN N irreduciblematrixwithentriesin{,} Wepresentaneasyway to find an (N +3) (N+3) irreducible matrix Ā with entries in {,} such that their Cuntz Krieger algebras O A and O Ā are isomorphic and det( A) = det( Ā) As a consequence, we know that two Cuntz Krieger algebras O A and O B are isomorphic if and only if the one-sided topological Markov shift (X A,σ A ) is continuously orbit equivalent to either (X B,σ B ) or (X B,σ B) For an N N irreducible matrix A with entries in {,}, let us denote by G(A) the abelian group Z N /( A t )Z N and by u A the position of the class [(,,)] of the vector (,,) in the group G(A) Throughout this short note, matrices are all assumed to be irreducible and not any permutation matrices J Cuntz in [3] has shown that the pair (K (O A ),[]) of the K -group K (O A ) of the Cuntz Krieger algebra O A and the class [] of the unit in K (O A ) is isomorphic to (G(A),u A ) In [2], M Rørdam has shown that (G(A),u A ) is a complete invariant of the isomorphism class of O A (see [6] for N 3) For an N N irreducible matrix A = [A(i,j)] N i,j= with entries in {,}, the (N +2) (N +2) irreducible matrix A defined by A(,) A(,N ) A(,N) A = A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) is called the Cuntz splice for A, which has been first introduced in [4] by J Cuntz, related to classification problem for Cuntz Krieger algebras In [4], he had used the notation A instead of the above A The crucial property of the Cuntz splice is that G(A ) is isomorphic to G(A) and det( A ) = det( A) The Cuntz splice
for the matrix [ ] is denoted by 2 In the proof of the above Rørdam s result [2, Theorem 65], J Cuntz s theorem [2, Theorem 72] is used which says that O 2 = O2 implies O A K = O A K for all irreducible non-permutation matrices A Since Rørdam has proved O 2 = O2 ([2, Lemma 64]), the result O A K = O A K holds for all irreducible non-permutation matrices A By using this result, Rørdam has also obtained that the group G(A) is a complete invariant of the stable isomorphism class of O A Let us denote by BF(A) the abelian group G(A t ) = Z N /( A)Z N, which is called the Bowen Franks group for N N matrix A ([]) Although BF(A) is isomorphic to G(A) as a group, there is no canonical isomorphism between them Related to classification theory of symbolic dynamical systems, J Franks has shown that the pair (BF(A), sgn(det( A))) is a complete invariant of the flow equivalence class of the two-sided topological Markov shift ( X A, σ A ) by usingbown Franks s result[] for the group BF(A) andparry Sullivan s result [] for the determinant det( A) Combining this with the Rørdam s result for the stable isomorphism classes of the Cuntz Krieger algebras, O A is stably isomorphic to O B if and only if ( X A, σ A ) is flow equivalent to either ( X B, σ B ) or ( X B, σ B ) In [9], the author has introduced a notion of continuous orbit equivalence in onesided topological Markov shifts to classify Cuntz Krieger algebras from a view point of topological dynamical system In [], H Matui and the author have shown that the triple (G(A),u A,sgn(det( A))) is a complete invariant of the continuous orbit equivalence class of the right one-sided topological Markov shift (X A,σ A ) This result is rephrased by using the above mentioned Rørdam s result for isomorphism classes of the Cuntz Krieger algebras such that the pair (O A,sgn(det( A))) is a complete invariant of the continuous orbit equivalence class of the one-sided topological Markov shift (X A,σ A ) The C -algebra O A is not necessarily isomorphic to O A, whereas they are stably isomorphic, because the position u A in G(A ) generally is different from the position u A in G(A) We note that the group G(A) determines the absolute value det( A) If G(A) is infinite, Ker( A) is not trivial so that det( A) = If G(A) is finite, it forms a finite direct sum Z/m Z Z/m r Z for some m,,m r N so that det( A) = m m r (cf [4], [5], [2]) By [, Lemma 37], we know that there is a matrix A with entries in {,} such that the triple (G(A),u A,sgn(det( A))) is isomorphic to (G(A ),u A, sgn(det( A ))), which means that there exists an isomorphism Φ : G(A) G(A ) such that Φ(u A ) = u A and sgn(det( A)) = sgn(det( A )) Following the given proof of [, Lemma 37], the construction of the matrix A seems to be slightly complicated and the matrix size of A becomes much bigger than that of A It is not an easy task to present the matrix A for the given matrix A in a concrete way In this short note, we directly present an (N +3) (N +3) matrix Ā with entries in {,} such that (G(A),u A,sgn(det( A))) is isomorphic to (G(Ā),uĀ, sgn(det( Ā))) The matrix Ā is constructed such that if A is an irreducible non-permutation matrix, so is Ā 2
We define A(,) A(,N ) A(,N) A = A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) and A(,) A(,N ) A(,N) Ā = (A A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) ) = () A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) The operation A A is nothing but an expansion defined by Parry Sullivan in [], and preserves their determinant: det( A) = det( A ) The following figure is a graphical expression of the matrix Ā from A v N v N v N+ v N+2 v N+3 Figure : We provide two lemmas The first one is seen in [] The second one is seen in [4] and [2] in a different form Lemma ([, Theorem 3]) The map η A : (x,,x N,x N,x N+ ) Z N+ (x,,x N,x N +x N+ ) Z N induces an isomorphism η A from G(A ) to G(A) such that η A ([(,,,)]) = u A Lemma 2 (cf [4, Proposition 2], [2, Proposition 7]) The map ξ A : (x,,x N ) Z N (x,,x N,,) Z N+2 induces an isomorphism ξ A from G(A) to G(A ) such that ξ A ([(,,,)]) = u A 3
Proof For y = (y,,y N ) Z N, put We then have z = z z N y = ( A t ) z y N ξ A (z) = z N = ( A t ) y N y N Hence we have ξ A (( A t )Z N ) ( A t )Z N+2 so that ξ A : Z N Z N+2 induces a homomorphism from G(A) to G(A ) denoted by ξ A Suppose that [ξ(x,,x N )] = in G(A ) so that x z y x N = ( A t ) z N z N+ z N+2 for some (z,,z N+2 ) Z N+2 It then follows that z N+ =,z N+2 = z N so that x x N z = ( A t ) This implies [(x,,x N )] = in G(A) and hence ξ A is injective For (x,,x N,x N+,x N+2 ) Z N+2, we have x x x x N = x N + = x N +( A t x N+ x N x N+2 x N+2 x N x N+2 ) x N+2 x N+ x N+2 z N z N+2 z N+ This implies that [(x,,x N,x N+,x N+2 )] = ξ A ([(x,,x N,x N x N 2 )]) in G(A ) Therefore ξ A : G(A) G(A ) is surjective and hence an isomorphism In particular, we see that [(,,,,)] = ξ A ([(,,,)]) in G(A ) We have the following theorem by the preceding two lemmas Theorem 3 For an N N matrix A with entries in {,}, let Ā be the (N+3) (N+3) matrix with entries in {,} defined in () Then there exists an isomorphism Φ : G(A) G(Ā) such that Φ(u A) = u Ā and the matrices A,Ā satisfy det( A) = det( Ā) If A is an irreducible non-permutation matrix, so is Ā 4
Proof DefineΦ : G(A) G(Ā)byΦ = ξ A η A sothatφ(u A) = ξ A ([(,,,)]) = u Ā Since det( Ā) = det( A ) = det( A), we see the desired assertion Let P be an N N permutation matrix coming from a permutation of the set {,2,,N} Since there exists a natural isomorphism Φ P : G(A) G(PAP ) such thatφ P (u A ) = u PAP anddet( A) = det( PAP ), thetriplet(g(a),u A,det( A)) does not depend on the choice of the vertex v N in the directed graph of the matrix A We have some corollaries Corollary 4 Let A be an irreducible non-permutation matrix with entries in {, } Then O A is isomorphic to O Ā and det( A) = det( Ā) Let denote the matrix which is the matrix Ā for the matrix A = [] By the above theorem, we have Corollary 5 (K (O ),u ) = (Z,) Hence the simple purely infinite C -algebra O has the same K-theory as the C - algebra O = C(S ) of the continuous functions on the unit circle S with] the positions of their units, whereas (K (O ),u ) = (Z,) for the matrix = by [6] (cf [4, [ p 5]) The following corollary has been shown in [] Its proof is now easy by using [2] Corollary 6 ([, Lemma 37]) Let F be a finitely generated abelian group and u an element of F Let s = when F is infinite and s = or when F is finite Then there exists an irreducible non-permutation matrix A such that (F,u,s) = (G(A),u A,sgn(det( A)) Proof By[2, Proposition 67(i)], we know that there exists an irreducible non-permutation matrix A such that (F,u) = (G(A),u A ) If s = sgn(det( A)), the matrix A is the desired one, otherwise Ā is the desired one Let A and B be two irreducible non-permutation matrices with entries in {, } The one-sided topological Markov shifts (X A,σ A ) and (X B,σ B ) are said to be flip continuously orbitequivalent if(x A,σ A )iscontinuouslyorbitequivalent toeither(x B,σ B )or(x B,σ B) Similarly two-sided topological Markov shifts ( X A, σ A ) and ( X B, σ B ) are said to be flip flow equivalent if ( X A, σ A ) is flow equivalent to either ( X B, σ B ), or ( X B, σ B ) We thus have the following corollaries Corollary 7 Let A, B be irreducible and not any permutation matrices with entries in {,} (i) O A is isomorphic to O B if and only if the one-sided topological Markov shifts (X A,σ A ) and (X B,σ B ) are flip continuously orbit equivalent 5
(ii) O A is stably isomorphic to O B if and only if the two-sided topological Markov shifts ( X A, σ A ) and ( X B, σ B ) are flip flow equivalent Let us denote by [O A ] the isomorphism class of the Cuntz Krieger algebra O A as a C -algebra Since (G(A),u A ) is isomorphic to (G(Ā),uĀ), we have [O A] = [O Ā ] We regard the sign sgn(det( A)) of det( A) as the orientation of the class [O A ] Then we can say that the pair ([O A ],sgn(det( A))) is a complete invariant of the continuous orbit equivalence class of the one-sided topological Markov shift (X A,σ A ) In the rest of this short note, we present another square matrix à of size N + 3 from a square matrix A = [A(i,j)] N i,j= of size N such that O A is isomorphic to Oà and det( A) = det( Ã) Define (N +3) (N +3) matrix à by setting A(,) A(,N ) A(,N) A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) à = (2) A(N,) A(N,N ) A(N,N) The difference between the previous matrix Ā in () and the above matrix à is the only ((N + 2),(N + 2))-component Its graphical expression of the matrix à from A is the following figure v N v N v N+ v N+2 v N+3 Figure 2: By virtue of [6], we know the following proposition Proposition 8 The Cuntz Krieger algebras O and O Ā à are isomorphic, and det( Ā) = det( Ã) Proof Let us denote by Āi the ith row vector of the matrix Ā of size N +3 We put E i the row vector of size N +3 such that E i = (,,, i,,,) where the ith component is one, and the other components are zero Then we have ĀN+2 = E N+ +ĀN+3 Since 6
the (N +2)th row ÃN+2 of à is ÃN+2 = E N+ +E N+3, and the other rows of à are the same as those of Ā, the matrix à is obtained from Ā by the primitive transfer Ā = E N+ +ĀN+3 ÃN+2 à in the sense of [6, Definition 35] We obtain that O is isomorphic to O Ā à by [6, Theorem 37], and det( Ā) = det( Ã) by [6, Theorem 84] Before endingthisshortnote, werefertodifferences amongthethreematrices A,Ā,à from a view point of dynamical system As (G(A ),det( A )) = (G(Ā),det( Ā)) = (G(Ã),det( Ã)), there is a possibility that their two sided topological Markov shifts ( X A, σ A ),( X, σā),( XÃ, σã) Ā are topologically conjugate We however know that they are not topologically conjugate to each other in general by the following example Denote by p n ( σ A ) the cardinal number of the n-periodic points {x X A σ A n (x) = x} of the topological Markov shift ( X A, σ A ) The zeta function ζ A (z) for ( X A, σ A ) is defined by ( ) p n ( σ A ) ζ A (z) = exp z n (cf[8]) n n= It is well-known that the formula ζ A (z) = det( za) holds ([2]) Let us denote by 2, 2, 2 the matrices A,Ā,à ] respectively It is direct to see that ζ 2(z) = for [ ζ 2 (z) = 4z +3z 2 +2z 3 z 4, 3z +4z 3 z 4, ζ 2 (z) = 3z +z 2 +z 3 +z 4 Thezetafunctionisinvariantundertopological conjugacysothat( X 2, σ 2 ),( X 2, σ 2),( X 2, σ 2 ) are not topologically conjugate to each other This paper is a revised version of the paper entitled Continuous orbit equivalence of topological Markov shifts and Cuntz splice arxiv:593v2 [mathoa] Acknowledgment This work was supported by JSPS KAKENHI Grant Number 5K4896 References [] R Bowen and J Franks, Homology for zero-dimensional nonwandering sets, Ann Math 6(977), pp [2] R Bowen and O E Lanford III, Zeta functions of the shift transformation, Trans Amer Math Soc 2(964), pp [3] J Cuntz, A class of C -algebras and topological Markov chains II: reducible chains and the Ext- functor for C -algebras, Invent Math 63(98), pp 25 4 [4] J Cuntz, The classification problem for the C -algebra O A, Geometric methods in operator algebras, Pitman Research Notes in Mathematics Series 23(986), pp
