COMPENDIUM ON (FRACTIONAL) DIFFUSION LIMITS FOR THE LINEAR BOLTZMANN EQUATION
Diffusion Approximation of Linear Boltzmann Equation Linear Boltzmann equation, for a system of monokinetic particles, with isotropic scattering ( t + ω x + σ)f (t, x, ω) = σ f (t, x) := f (t, x, ω ) dω S d 1 S d 1 Distribution function f f (t, x, ω) 0, scattering rate σ 1 f (t, x, v) = f (t, x) 1 σ ω xf (t, x, ω) 1 σ tf (t, x, ω) f (t, x) 1 σ ω x f (t, x) 1 σ t f (t, x) + o(1/σ)
Two Fundamental Ingredients (a) Local conservation of particle number (exact) t f + div x ωf = 0 (b) Fick s (Fourier) law for the current (approximate) ωf ω f (t, x) 1 σ ω ω x f (t, x) 1 σ ω t f (t, x) since ω = 0, 1 σ ω ω x f (t, x) = 1 dσ x f (t, x) ω ω = 1 d ω 2 I = 1 d I Conclusion f f ρ(t, x), with t ρ(t, x) = 1 dσ xρ(t, x)
Fractional Diffusion Approximation I (Mellet, IUMJ) Linear Boltzmann equation of the form ( t + v x + σ)f (t, x, v) = M(v) f (t, x, w)dw, R d x, v R d Probability density on R d M M(v) = M( v) v d 2α, α (0, 1) In the limit as σ 1 f ρ(t/σ 2α, x)m(v), t ρ = c( ) α ρ Standard diffusion regime impossible since the would-be diffusion coefficient v 2 M(v)dv =
Fractional Diffusion Approximation II (Frisch 2, MNRAS 77) Non LTE radiative transfer (σ(ν) h(ɛ)µ x )I (x, µ, ν) = (1 ɛ)σ(ν) σ(ν)i + ɛσ(ν)q(x) where f := f (µ, ν)dµdν In the case σ(ν) := 2 π e ν2, set h(ɛ) := (ɛ ln ɛ ) 1 the source function S(x) := (1 ɛ)σ(ν) σ(ν)i + ɛσ(ν)q(x) satisfies S(x) S(x) = Q(x)
Two Mechanisms Driving to Fractional Diffusion (1) In the work of Mellet (see also similar ideas in the work of several authors - Aceves-Sanchez, Cesbron, Mischler, Mouhot, Schmeiser... the scattering rate is constant, but the fractional diffusion comes from the heavy tail in the equilibrium distribution, so that the current is not proportional to the gradient of the density (Fick s law does not hold) (2) In the work of H. and U. Frisch, the scattering rate is not uniformly large in ν thus the background medium is opaque for low ν and transparent for high ν; fractional diffusion sets in as a compromise between standard diffusion and ballistic transport
A NEW ROUTE TO FRACTIONAL DIFFUSION LIMITS FOR THE LINEAR BOLTZMANN EQUATION
Fractional Laplacian and Harmonic Extension Let f L p (T d ), with 1 p <, and let 0 < γ < 2. Then ( x ) γ/2 f (x) = y F (x, 0) where F F (x, y) C b ([0, ); L p (T d )) is the unique solution to { x F (x, y) + γ 2 c γ/2 γ y 2 2/γ 2 y F (x, y) = 0, y > 0 F (x, 0) = f (x), x T d with c γ = 2 γ Γ( γ/2) /Γ(γ/2) Remark In this case, fractional Laplacian=Dirichlet-to-Neuman operator Not always true...
Radiative Transfer in a Half-Space Position variable z = (x, y) with x R 2 and y > 0 Gray radiative intensity in direction ω S 2 denoted f f (z, ω) 0 ω z f (z, ω) = σ p(ω, ω )(f (z, ω ) f (z, ω))dω, y > 0 S 2 Thomson type scattering, at (frequency independent) rate σ > 0 Scattering transition probability p p(ω, ω ) L 2 (S 2 S 2 ) s.t. p(ω, ω ) = p(ω, ω) > 0, p(ω, ω )dω = 1 S 2 p(qω, Qω ) = p(ω, ω ), Q O 3 (R), ω, ω S 2 Examples (a) p(ω, ω ) = 1 4π (isotropic scattering) (b) p(ω, ω ) = 3 16π (1 + (ω ω ) 2 ) (Rayleigh phase function)
Boundary Condition Incoming radiation at y = 0: Lambert reflection+ isotropic source e.g. black body f (x, 0, ω) = R(x) + α f (x, 0, ω )(ω y ) dω, ω y > 0 π S 2 Example Source R(x) = at (x) 4 where T (x) =temperature at x (black-body) a := 8π5 k 4 B 15c 2 3 (Boltzmann-Stefan constant) α := albedo coefficient
Scaling Assumptions (a) High scattering regime σ 1 (b) High albedo regime 1 α 1/κσ Realized by taking α = κσ, S(x) = (1 + κσ)r(x) 1 + κσ Notation φ := 1 4π φ(ω)dω, S 2 ψ ± := 4 ω± ψ
Rescaled equation (BVP) ω z f (z, ω) + σf (z, ω) = σ p(ω, ω )f (z, ω )dω S 2 f (x, 0, ω) = S(x) 1 + κσ + κσ f (x, 0) 1 + κσ Equivalent form of BC f (x, 0, ω) = S(x) 4κσ ωf (x, 0), ω y > 0 since (1 + κσ)f (x, 0, ω) = f (x, 0, ω) + 4κσ ω + f (x, 0)
Main Result Denote Z = T 2 (0, + ), Lf (z, ω) := f (z, ω) p(ω, ω )f (z, ω )dω S 2 Thm A Let S W 1, (T 2 ). For each σ > 0 there exists a unique solution to the BVP satisfying f σ L (Z S 2 ) s.t. for all j = 1, 2 f σ L (Z S 2 ) S L (T 2 ) xj f σ L (Z S 2 ) xj S L (T 2 )
Main Result (continued) Lemma There exists a unique Ω L 2 (S 2 ) s.t. (LΩ)(ω) = ω, Ω = 0 Example Assuming that p(ω, ω ) = q((ω ω ) 2 ), one finds Ω(ω) = ω Thm B In the limit as σ, one has f σ y=0 R R(x) in L 2 (T 2 S 2 ; ω y dxdω) where R R(x) is the solution to the fractional diffusion equation R(x) κ ω Ω ( x) 1/2 R(x) = S(x), x T 2
Strategy (1) To prove that f σ ρ in L (Z S 2 ) and σ(f f ) Ω z ρ in L 2 (Z S 2 ) where ρ ρ(z) L (Z), and ρ L 2 (Z) (2)... and that { ρ(z) = 0, z Z ρ(x, 0) 4 3 κ Ω ω nρ(x, 0) = S(x), x T 2 (3) Finally, to prove that f σ y=0 R R(x) in L 2 (T 2, ω dωdx) σ ω y f 1 3 Ω ω y ρ y=0 in H 1/2 (T 2 )
KEY POINTS/IDEAS IN THE PROOF
H Theorem Lemma The operator L is bounded, self-adjoint, Fredholm on L 2 (S 2 ): ker L = R, ran L = R, (φ Lφ) L 2 µ φ φ 2 L 2 Proof: the operator I L is Hilbert-Schmidt because p L 2 ((S 2 ) 2 ); that the nullspace is the set of constants follows from p(ω, ω ) > 0 Entropy flux σµ f σ f σ 2 L dx σ (f 2 T 2 ω σ Lf σ ) L 2 ω dx T 2 = d 1 dy T 2 2 ω y fσ 2 (x, y)dx Integrating in y σµ f σ f σ 2 L dz f σ 2 2 ω L zω Z
Uniqueness Assume that S 0. (1) by H Theorem T ω y f 2 σ (x, y)dx is nonincreasing (2) splitting f σ = f σ f σ + f σ and expanding square norm 1 T 2 2 ω y fσ 2 (x, y)dx L 1 y + L 2 y 0 as y (3) since S 0 σµ f σ f σ 2 L dz = 0 2 ω Z (4) hence 0 = f σ f σ = σlf σ = ω z f σ + BC f σ = 0
Bound on f σ f σ (1) Straightforward application of H Theorem gives f σ f σ 2 L 2 z,ω S L x µσ Gives O(1/ σ), but O(1/σ) is needed (2) Write BVP for g σ (z, ω) = f σ (z, ω) F σ (z), where ( F σ (z) := S(x) 1+κσ + κσ ) 1+κσ fσ (x, 0) (1 y) 2 + One gets ω z g σ + σlg σ = ω F σ (z), g σ y=0,ωy >0 = 0 H Thm applied to the BVP satisfied by g σ implies that σ(f σ f σ ) L 2 z,ω = σ(g σ g σ ) L 2 z,ω C S 2 W 1, (T 2 )
Diffusion Limit Write weak formulation of BVP for the test function σφ(z) + Ω(ω) z φ(z), φ C c (Z) Passing to the limit as σ, one gets (S(x) ρ(x, 0))φ(x, 0)dx = κ Ω ω 3 4 Z φ ρ(z)dz One recognizes in this identity the variational formulation of { ρ(z) = 0, z Z ρ(x, 0) 4 3 κ Ω ω nρ(x, 0) = S(x), x T 2 Finally one obtains the fractional diffusion equation by the harmonic extension representation of
FINAL REMARKS/EXTENSIONS
More General Domains If Z is a smooth (bounded) domain of R d+1 with boundary Z and outward normal field denoted n z for z Z, the diffusion limit of { ω z f σ + σlf σ = 0 in Z (BVP ) f σ Γ = S(x) 1+κσ + κσ Sd (1+κσ) B d (ω n z) + f σ Γ is { ρ(z) = 0, z Z ρ Z Bd+1 B d κ Ω ω n ρ Z = S Denoting by Λ the Dirichlet-to-Neuman operator on Z, we conclude that R := ρ Z satisfies the equation R Bd+1 B d κ Ω ω ΛR = S
When is Λ = Const.? Dirichlet-to-Neumann operator Λ: H 1/2 ( Z) H 1/2 ( Z) given by Λu = n U Z where { U = 0 in Z U Z = u so that Λu, v H 1/2,H 1/2 = Z U(z) v(z)dz Examples (a) If Z = R d (0, ) (half-space), then Λ = (b) If Z = B 2 (unit disk in R 2 ), then Λ = S1 (c) If Z = B d (unit ball in R d ), then Λ = d (d 1) 2 4 Sd Rd Sd
Open Questions (a) Is there an analogue of this result for the linearized Boltzmann equation of the kinetic theory of gases? Need to get rid of maximum principle in the argument... (b) Can one get powers of other than? Requires strong anisotropy in the diffusion limit for the linear Boltzmann equation
