4 Introduction Overview Scope Record Manager Authorities Guide provides details on selected topics that catalogers need to identify and verify information in bibliographic and/or authority records via the authority files that are available in Record Manager by describing indexes that each authority file provides and the MARC tags that data is indexed from. Bibliographic records For comprehensive information about WorldCat bibliographic records, see OCLC Bibliographic Formats and Standards. Availability Record Manager Authorities Guide is available on the OCLC website, in PDF or HTML format, at the following location: Authority records You can search an authority file to determine if an authoritative heading exists. If an authorized heading exists, it is described in an authority record. An authority record contains information about a name or a subject heading. Each authority record may contain the established form of the heading, see from references, see also from references and notes. The record also contains coded data that describes characteristics of the heading or record. Records have fixed-length fields that contain coded information from the MARC 21 Leader, 005 and 008 fields. Records have variable-length fields that contain coded and textual information. Library of Congress Names and Subject Authority File Source: Library of Congress Name authority file: contains over 9 million records for personal names, corporate names, conference names, titles and geographic names. Subject authority file: contains over 400,000 authority records in the Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH), 900 authority records in the Children s Subject Headings, and 1,600 authority records in the Library of Congress Genre/Form Terms for Library and Archival Materials (LCGFT). MeSH (Medical Subject Headings) Source: U.S. National Library of Medicine Subject authority file: 630,000 records A controlled vocabulary maintained by the U.S. National Library of Medicine that provides uniformity and consistency to the indexing and cataloging of biomedical literature

5 NTA Names (Nederlandse Thesaurus van Auteursnamen) Source: Koninklijke Bibliotheek (National Library of the Netherlands) Name authority file: 2,571,933 records representing only personal names. Māori Subject Headings File Source: Ngā Upoko Tukutuku Subject authority file: contains over 15,000 records, mostly topical subject headings Māori Subject Headings provide subject access in te reo Māori to materials for and/or about Māori. The thesaurus framework offers a structured path to a Māori world view within library and archival cataloguing and description. The headings are developed by Te Whakakaokao, the Māori Subject Headings Working Group, guided by the three groups who oversee the headings: Te Rōpū Whakahau, LIANZA and the National Library of New Zealand. GND German Authority File Source: Deutsche Nationalbibliothek (German National Library) GND is an Integrated Authority File that contains over 9 million records for Persons, Corporate bodies, Conferences and Events, Geographic Information, Topics and Works. It is operated cooperatively by the German National Library, all German-speaking library networks, the German Union Catalogue of Serials and numerous other institutions

6 Indexes and indexed fields About authority file indexing How you specify the desired index varies with the search method you use. When searching from the basic search box, you must type the index label followed by a colon (:). Not all available indexes are presented in the drop-down list. In the advanced search box, enter the index label followed by a colon to search for an index not presented in the drop-down list. For searching, the fields below are indexed by individual word. Library of Congress numeric indexes ARN (an:) 001 LCCN (ln:) a z a Note: Indexing field 667 helps catalogers identify the history of personal names previously in undifferentiated authority records and subsequently established as separate authority records, using unique control records with 667 fields that contain the word undifferentiated. No textual data in the 667 field is indexed. The system does not compare or verify the LCCNs in field 667 with LCCNs in field 010.
