A note on mean-value properties of harmonic functions on the hypercube arxiv: v3 [math.ca] 20 Aug 205 P. P. Petrov,a a Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Sofia University, 5 James Bourchier blvd., 64 Sofia, Bulgaria Abstract For functions defined on the n-dimensional hypercube (r) = {x R n x i r, i =, 2,..., n} and harmonic therein, we establish certain analogues of Gauss surface and volume mean-value formulas for harmonic functions on the ball in R n and their extensions for polyharmonic functions. The relation of these formulas to best one-sided L -approximation by harmonic functions on (r) is also discussed.. Introduction This note is devoted to formulas for calculation of integrals over the n- dimensional hypercube centered at 0 := (r) := {x R n x i r, i =, 2,..., n}, r > 0, and its boundary P n := P n (r) := (r), based on integration over hyperplanar subsets of and exact for harmonic or polyharmonic functions. They are presented in Section 2 and can be considered as natural analogues on of Gauss surface and volume mean-value formulas for harmonic functions ([5]) and Pizzetti formula [8],[3, Part IV, Ch. 3, pp ] for polyharmonic functions on the ball in R n. Section 3 deals with the best one-sided L -approximation by harmonic functions. Let us remind that a real-valued function f is said to be harmonic (polyharmonic of degree m 2) in a given domain Ω R n if f C 2 (Ω) Corresponding author; Phone: , Fax: address: peynov@fmi.uni-sofia.bg (P. P. Petrov)
(f C 2m (Ω)) and f = 0 ( m f = 0) on Ω, where is the Laplace operator and m is its m-th iterate f := i= 2 f, m f := ( m f). x 2 i For any set D R n, denote by H (D) (H m (D), m 2) the linear space of all functions that are harmonic (polyharmonic of degree m) in a domain containing D. The notation dλ n will stand for the Lebesgue measure in R n. 2. Mean-value theorems Let B n (r) := {x R n x := ( n i= x2 i ) /2 r} and S n (r) := {x R n x = r} be the ball and the hypersphere in R n with center 0 and radius r. The following famous formulas are basic tools in harmonic function theory and state that for any function h which is harmonic on B n (r) both the average over S n (r) and the average over B n (r) are equal to h(0). The surface mean-value theorem. If h H (B n (r)), then h dσ n = h(0), () σ n (S n (r)) S n(r) where dσ n is the (n )-dimensional surface measure on the hypersphere S n (r). The volume mean-value theorem. If h H (B n (r)), then h dλ n = h(0). (2) λ n (B n (r)) B n(r) The balls are known to be the only sets in R n satisfying the surface or the volume mean-value theorem. This means that if Ω R n is a nonvoid domain with a finite Lebesgue measure and if there exists a point x 0 Ω such that h(x 0 ) = λ n(ω) h dλ Ω n for every function h which is harmonic and integrable on Ω, then Ω is an open ball centered at x 0 (see [6]). The mean-value properties can also be reformulated in terms of quadrature domains [9]. Recall that Ω R n is said to be a quadrature domain for H (Ω), if Ω is a connected open set and there is a Borel measure dµ with a compact support K µ Ω such 2
that Ω f dλ n = K µ f dµ for every λ n -integrable harmonic function f on Ω. Using the concept of quadrature domains, the volume mean-value property is equivalent to the statement that any open ball in R n is a quadrature domain and the measure dµ is the Dirac measure supported at its center. On the other hand, no domains having corners are quadrature domains [7]. From this point of view, the open hypercube In is not a quadrature domain. Nevertheless, here we prove that the closed hypercube is a quadrature set in an extended sense - there exists a measure dµ with a compact support K µ having the above property with Ω replaced by but the condition K µ In is violated exactly at the corners (Theorem ). This property of is of crucial importance for the best one-sided L -approximation with respect to H ( ) (Section 3). Let us denote by Dn ij the (n )-dimensional hyperplanar segments of defined by D ij n := D ij n (r) := {x x k x i = x j, k i, j}, i < j n. Denote also and dλ ω k m and ω k (x) := (r max { x, x 2,..., x n }) k, k 0, k! := ω k dλ m. It can be calculated that λ ω k λ ω k r n+k r n+k n ( ) = 2 n n! (n + k)!, λω k n (P n ) = 2 n n! (n + k )!, r n+k n (D n ) = 2 n n! (n + k )!, where D n := i<j n D ij The following holds true. Theorem. If h H ( ), then h satisfies: (i) Surface mean-value formula for the hypercube h dλ n = h dλ n, (3) λ n (P n ) P n λ n (D n ) D n (ii) Volume mean-value formula for the hypercube λ ω h dλ ω k k n = n ( ) λ ω h dλ ω k+ k+ n, k 0. (4) n (D n ) D n In particular, both surface and volume mean values of h are attained on D n. 3 n.
Figure : The sets D 2 3 () (white), D 3 3 () (green) and D 23 3 () (coral). Proof. Set and M i := M i (x) := max x j, j i x i t := (x,..., x i, t, x i+,..., x n ). Using the harmonicity of h, we get for k 0 = h dλ ω 2 h k n = ω k dλ i= x 2 n i r r ω k =... (x) h (x) dx i dx... dx i dx i+... dx n x i x i = i= r i= r... {( Mi + r M i ) sign x i ω k (x) h } (x) dx i x i dx... dx i dx i+... dx n r r { r =... ω k (x) } [h(x i x M i x i ) + h(x)] dx i i i= dx... dx i dx i+... dx n. 4
Hence, we have if k = and 0 = 0 = i= r... r {h(x i ) + h(x i +r) (5) [h(x i M i ) + h(x i +M i )]} dx... dx i dx i+... dx n i= r r r... ω k 2 (x)[h(x i x i ) + h(x)] dx i M i dx... dx i dx i+... dx n (6) r r +... ω k (x i +M i )[h(x i M i ) + h(x i +M i )] i= dx... dx i dx i+... dx n if k 2. Clearly, (5) is equivalent to (3) and from (6) it follows 0 = h dλ ω k n = h dλ ω k 2 n 2 h dλ ω k n, D n (7) which is equivalent to (4). Let M := M(x) := max i n x i. Analogously to the proof of Theorem (ii), Equation (7) is generalized to: Corollary. If h H ( ) and ϕ C 2 [0, r] is such that ϕ(0) = 0 and ϕ (0) = 0, then 0 = ϕ(r M) h dλ n = ϕ (r M)h dλ n 2 ϕ (r M)h dλ n. (8) D n The volume mean-value formula (2) was extended by P. Pizzetti to the following [8, 3, 2]. The Pizzetti formula. If g H m (B n (r)), then m g dλ n = r n π n/2 B n(r) k=0 r 2k 2 2k Γ(n/2 + k + ) k g(0). k! Here we present a similar formula for polyharmonic functions on the hypercube based on integration over the set D n. 5
Theorem 2. If g H m ( ), m, and ϕ C 2m [0, r] is such that ϕ (k) (0) = 0, k = 0,,..., 2m, then the following identity holds true for any k 0: ϕ (2m) (r M)g dλ n = 2 where ϕ (j) (t) = dj ϕ dt j (t). m s=0 D n ϕ (2s+) (r M) m s g dλ n, (9) Proof. Equation (9) is a direct consequence from (8): 0 = ϕ(r M) m g dλ n = 2 ϕ () (r M) m g dλ n + ϕ (2) (r M) m g dλ n D n m =... = 2 ϕ (2s+) m s g dλ n + ϕ (2m) g dλ n. D n s=0 3. A relation to best one-sided L -approximation by harmonic functions Theorem suggests that for a certain positive cone in C( ) the set D n is a characteristic set for the best one-sided L -approximation with respect to H ( ) as it is explained and illustrated by the examples presented below. For a given f C( ), let us introduce the following subset of H ( ): H (, f) := {h H ( ) h f on }. A harmonic function h f H (, f) is said to be a best one-sided L - approximant from below to f with respect to H ( ) if f h f f h for every h H (, f), where g := g dλ n. Theorem (ii) readily implies the following ([, 7]). 6
Theorem 3. Let f C( ) and h f H (, f). Assume further that the set D n belongs to the zero set of the function f h f. Then h f is a best one-sided L -approximant from below to f with respect to H ( ). Corollary 2. If f C ( ), any solution h of the problem h Dn = f Dn, h Dn = f Dn, h H (, f), (0) is a best one-sided L -approximant from below to f with respect to H ( ). Corollary 3. If f(x) = g(x) i<j n (x2 i x 2 j) 2, where g C( ) and g 0 on, then h f (x) 0 is a best one-sided L -approximant from below to f with respect to H ( ). Example. Let n = 2, r = and f (x, x 2 ) = x 2 x 2 2. By Corollary 2, the solution h f (x, x 2 ) = x 4 / x2 x 2 2 x 4 2/4 of the interpolation problem (0) with f = f is a best one-sided L -approximant from below to f with respect to H (I 2 ) and f h f = 8/45. Since the function f belongs to the positive cone of the partial differential operator D2,2 4 := (that is, D2,2f 4 > 0), 4 x 2 x2 2 one can compare the best harmonic one-sided L -approximation to f with the corresponding approximation from the linear subspace of C(I 2 ): B 2,2 (I 2 ) := {b C(I 2 ) b(x, x 2 ) = [a 0j (x )x j 2 + a j (x 2 )x j ]}. j=0 The possibility for explicit constructions of best one-sided L -approximants from B 2,2 (I 2 ), is studied in [4]. The functions f b f and f b f, where b f and b f are the unique best one-sided L -approximants to f with respect to B 2,2 (I 2 ) from below and above, respectively, play the role of basic error functions of the canonical one-sided L -approximation by elements of B 2,2 (I 2 ). For instance, b f can be constructed as the unique interpolant to f on the boundary := {(x, x 2 ) I 2 x + x 2 = } of the inscribed square and f b f = 4/45 (Fig. 2). Example 2. Let n = 2, r = and f 2 (x, x 2 ) = x 8 + 4x 4 x x 8 2. The solution h f 2 (x, x 2 ) = x 8 + x (x 6 x x 2 x 6 2) + 70x 4 x 4 2 of (0) with f = f 2 is a best one-sided L -approximant from below to f 2 with respect to H (I 2 ) and f 2 h f 2 = 8/75. It can also be verified that f 2 b f 2 = 2/900 (see Fig. 3). 7
Figure 2: The graphs of the function f (x, x 2 ) = x 2 x 2 2 (coral) and its best one-sided L -approximants from below, h f with respect to H (I 2 ) (left) and b f with respect to B 2,2 (I 2 ) (right). Figure 3: The graphs of the function f 2 (x, x 2 ) = x 8 + 4x 4 x x 8 2 (coral) and its best one-sided L -approximants from below, h f2 with respect to H (I 2 ) (left) and b f2 with respect to B 2,2 (I 2 ) (right). Remark. Let ϕ C 2 [0, r] is such that ϕ(0) = 0, ϕ (0) = 0, and ϕ 0, ϕ 0 on [0, r]. It follows from (8) that Theorem 3 also holds for the best weighted L -approximation from below with respect to H ( ) with weight ϕ (r M). The smoothness requirements were used for brevity and wherever possible they can be weakened in a natural way. References [] Armitage, D.H. and Gardiner, S.J.
